Root Need help deciding on a ROM (my 1st ROM)

I've been rooted for a few months but I haven't had the courage to do much other than play with titanium backup and wifi teather. I did add a custom kernal (2.6.32.15-netarchy-toastmod-4.1.9.1-cfsroot@paris-laptop#7) I only downloaded the kernal because it was to fix the trickle charge but i don't think it's working anymore so don't care too much about the kernal.

I want a sense rom that I don't need to update the radios for. Also one that has all the bloat crap removed. Can any of you guys help me decide what to go with?

We would need to know what radios you have currently? There are a few out that are still running the older radios but most are using the current ones. Any particular reason you don't want to update them? Your rom variety would be larger if you did.

Most of the sense roms are stable and have everything working with all the bloatware removed. Most of them though would require the newer radios. I believe there are 1 or 2 that would not though. Virus rom 3.29 I think is one of them

You can go to settings>about phone>software and it should list your baseband(radio) version. You could also reboot to hboot and it is listed there as well. Radio updates are easy. Before we get too far though, what recovery and version are you using? You might need to update that so that you can make sure to save your 4g keys.

You can find out your hboot version and recovery version that way. Most likely you will need to change your recovery to an updated version. Radios are easy to flash(just like a rom) or you can go with Sprint Lovers that has the radios and rom in one package.

Clockwork would need to updated in order to make sure your Wimax(4g) keys are safe. Go here: http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/259446-clockwork-amon-ra-pc36img-files.html and download the file for Clockwork 2.6.0.1. Follow the directions there to flash it. After doing that, go to recovery and make a backup.

Most roms that are 3.70 based(the latest) would require the latest radios also. Go here: [ Radios ][ 12-17 ] All EVO Radio, WiMAX, PRI, NV & HBoot versions - xda-developers and download the combo file. You would flash it like a rom. Another choice would be the Sprint Lover's rom. It includes the radio update in the rom so you only have to flash one thing to get them both.

Like I said, change your recovery first and make a new nandroid so it saves your wimax keys. I believe the steps to doing radio updates and flashing roms is included in the Rooting for Dummies guide in the After Rooting section. Any questions, feel free to ask. As far as a rom to choose from, I would take a look around at the screen shots and try them out. If you don't like them, nandroid restore is your friend

quick question when I do a nandroid restore the rom is still on my sd card correct? I have to actually go in there and delete it if i don't want it correct?

Calkulin's Format All - Flash prior to flashing ROM. It will wipe everything for you including /system, which normal data wipes skip (they only wipe /data and /cache)

I don't have a problem with anything except the crappy battery life -- is Sprint Lovers the solution? If not, which rom has the best battery life and how much better is it compared to stock? Caulkin's Format is definitely a good idea when flashing a new rom. You need to wipe user data/factory reset and dalvik-cache at a minimum. I do both then run Caulkin's for added insurance before flashing. When flashing Kernels and themes, you just need to wipe Dalvik-cache.

A rom change while allowing you to get rid of bloatware and getting something themed is not going to give you a noticable change in battery life. You would need to flash a kernel to get that kind of affect. Take a look here: [GUIDE]

I agree/disagree Mr. Ed. Yes it is silly to see it repeated over and over, but (having been one of the noobs who did that like a month ago lol) its kinda hard to know what questions to ask (esp at first) The specific finite things you look for in a ROM are acquired tatse type things, and to even find out what youre tasting, you unfortuneately hafta ask a bunch of "dumb" questions. Having said that, the existence of a "dumb" question is still up for debate LoL anyways, Mr. Ed is entirely correct in saying make nandroids and try stuff out. As a nearly paranoid type, i also backup my nandroids to my lappy just in case.... but yeah, make nands, and ditch the ones you dont like/want... oh, and rename them to something other than a date.... too many of em gets confusing when theyre all numbers lol

Ok, i was in the same boat as you.... I was DIGUSTED with the battery life and all the cr@p bloatware that sprint thinks we all need to have on our otherwise awesome devices!!! But i digress, Ive never tried sprint lovers, but ive tried 14 others from both the sense world and AOSP, and the best luck ive had is with CM7 (which is an aosp rom) The battery life issue can be resolved by a good rom/kernel combo. Im on the CM7 nightly from 3.17.11, works great for me, but the experience will vary based upon which physical build you have. Best thing to do is try stuff out.... BUT ALWAYS DO NANDROID BACKUPS!!!! LoL sorry for yelling, but its that important oh, and going from sense roms to aosp, id strongly reccommend doing a caulkins wipe... theyre so inherently different that its apparently necessary LoL happy hunting and good luck homey

Get the Amon-Ra recovery... i was using clockwork for some time, and thought to myself, " whats the diff?" well, ive since discovered flashing to be a far easier process with amon vs clockwork

All i did was run both of those 2 caulkin's too since i was under the impression those two tools did all that for you. Did i do it wrong?

My battery life seems to be really bad right now. Would changing the Kernal help me?

It likely would. Usually we recommend giving them a couple days to "settle in" so to speak. If you had a custom kernel before you will likely see worse life on this one as it has the stock #15 kernel. Netarchy has a variety of kernels to chose from that work very well with Sense roms. Look here: http://www.qap.la/~netarchy/ for most of the current ones available.

If you are having no issues with the rom functioning, then you should be good to go.

theres a zip file around here somewhere (xtreme, if you have it, could ya link it pls?) that you flash just like a rom, go into recovery, update with the zip, and from then on youll be using amon for recovery. There is quite a tangiable difference between them.... im at work(at a callcenter) so i dont have my bookmarks etc to easily post the link.... ::wishing there was more time to goof off here lol::
