Double-tap to unlock dial pad

I bought a used MyTouch 3G to use with T-Mobile. I did a factory reset, which left me with Android 2.2.1. I have a problem with the dial pad when talking on a call.

These days companies do everything possible to avoid having to actually answer the phone and talk directly to a customer. And if they do have actual humans to talk to you it is necessary to wade through menus to get to the right person. The problem is that when the menu system says "press 3 to pay your bill" I look at the screen and it says "double tap to unlock." By the time I manage to get the double tapping done and the dial pad unlocked the menu system has moved on. Or worse, in my haste to double tap I inadvertently hit one of the numbers.

I would like very much to disable to dial pad locking, but after searching the forums for hours I find no solution. I did find a post from 2009 where another user had the same problem, but no one posted an answer.

I don't even understand the purpose of locking the dial pad. If I'm on a call I might need the dial pad at any moment. Why lock it?

I hope someone has an answer because this is driving me nuts.

I share your frustration. Since I don't sit and blab on the phone for hours, I would love to have a setting that the screen does not go blank while I am talking, as well as the locked dial pad thing. Hopefully one of us will find a solution.

I may have found an answer. There is a free app called keepscreen. It allows you to define for which apps the screen DOES NOT go blank. I did a quick test calling voice mail and I think it may work. The only downside is that the screen will stay on for ALL calls. Take a look at

Thanks for the tip. I installed it and set it not to blank the dialer, dialer storage, but DM command storage wasn't listed as an option (MyTouch 3G with Froyo 2.2.1). The dialpad still locks after a few seconds.

I think the problem is that keepscreen is to keep the screen from going blank. That is not the problem. The problem is that the dialpad is automatically locking after three or four seconds. It doesn't go blank, however.

I still have not had a chance to work with it, but thanks for the update. DM command storage was not an option on my phone either. I believe that if the screen does not go black it will be an improvement, even if short of what we would like to see.

Hitting the menu button does seem to work under some conditions, but not all. We (my wife and I) are new users and we're just getting used to the Ascend. In trying to set up voice mail, that stupid double-tap lock kept coming up, and we were very frustrated because when you hit the keypad to unlock the screen, it records what you hit as the required response. Maybe we should have been more careful where we hit the screen to unlock it. Anyway, the Menu button did work in this situation. It unlocked the screen. Later on, after the voice mail account was set up, we tried to delete some voice mail, and pressing Menu didn't unlock the screen. My wife found that tapping the screen very lightly seemed to work. I'll try this in the future, but I'm not real confident it will always work.

Just passing this on so that maybe others will help solve this problem for good.

I hit this problem with my new Galaxy Pocket. After some hours of searching, experiment and heartache, I found a fix. When the "double-tap to unlock" messsage appeared, I double tap, and hold down the menu key. "double-tap to unlock" did not re-appear.

This caught me on a bad day and frustrated the hell out of me. I've spent some time, grudgingly, finding the answer so to help anyone else I write this.
The previous answer cracked it for me: push the menu button while double tapping "double-tap to unlock"
Didn't work, close but no cigar.
Pushing the menu button does make the "double-tap to unlock" go away (You don't actually need to double tap the 'lock' image) and it stays away while you 'continue' to press the menu button.
OK, that would have done it for me, I could live with that. Just keep the left thumb on the menu button while I use my right hand on the keypad, it works.
Then, because I felt I was on the trail of maybe fixing this thing, I pushed a few other buttons - and whalla: PUSH THE RETURN BUTTON (You know, the long arrow on the button that loops around and makes a big horizontal u shape, it has an arrow head on one of the ends of the u)- the lock goes away but comes back after a much longer period than before - BUT - push the return button again when the lock re-appears and it goes away, PERMENANTLY (for the duration of your call). OK That's good enough for me.
My Phone is a: Samsung Galaxy 5. Model GT15503T. Running Android Version 2.2.1 and FROYO.AJJP9
