I've already been asked how to install a ROM on the Inspire, so I will write this guide on how to root the Inspire. I will soon write a guide on how to install ROM's on the Inspire.

This process works for PC users. It is my understanding that Mac users like AndreaChristiano cannot use this program.

ALSO, it is wise to make a copy of your SD Card, so that once rooted, you can easily obtain your photos, videos, music, etc... without a hitch.

Here we go!

First, get the suspects for this project: Bubby's Simple One-Click Root Method, your HTC drivers, found in the HTC Sync download folder. You can find HTC Sync on HTC's help page for the Inspire 4G. Get Bubby's root method right HERE. Also, if he says to get anything else, do so. Before you download Bubby's root program, uninstall your anti-virus (AVG, Norton, etc...) and disable your firewalls. If you don't, the program will pretty much not run correctly.

Now that you have all of your necessary tools to root, do it.

Plug in your Inspire 4G and set it to "Disk Drive". And USB debugging should be turned on. When your phone comes up on your computer, choose to view the files. Once there, right click on the drive's name and click on "Format". DO NOT DO A QUICK FORMAT. It will take some time as well.

Now that you have formatted your SD Card, open up Bubby's root program. When it opens the goldcard maker, don't bother with the format option, we already did that. Skip onto the CID section. Select the only option and click on "Get CID". It will, if you disabled your firewalls and uninstalled your anti-virus, give you a goldcard number that has already been reversed. Click on the link to get the actual goldcard file. You will need to give an email address so that it knows where to send the goldcard. Don't worry, I've rooted twice so far and I haven't gotten any spam emails or anything of that nature. Once you download your goldcard, go back to the goldcard maker and load the goldcard image file. Select your phone (Mine is drive J or something like that) and load it. It will say success, so you can now move on. Go to the small window that says "I am done making my goldcard".

Now that the goldcard process is done, the program will actually run. Click on the option that says something about S-OFF and ROOT.

BEFORE YOU START THIS, PUT YOUR PHONE IN "CHARGE ONLY".

Now go through the program and do what it says. The latest version of this program has simplified instructions, so don't sweat it.

After all of that is finished, you should be done! You should now have a rooted device! Go ahead and BACKUP this ROM and install a different one if you want to.

ALSO, you only need to disable firewalls and uninstall your anti-virus for the download of the program. After that, you should be able to re-install your stuff and enable firewalls without messing up the program. I always wait until the root method is finished, so I don't know if it will have any further effects on the program.

I, nor the author of this simple root method take ANY responsibility to any physical or internal damage done to your device and or software. ANYTHING you do to YOUR phone is at your OWN risk. Downloading ROMs and Themes, installing anything not from an Official Google or HTC source can potentially damage or BRICK your phone! Please use these instructions, to EDUCATE yourself on how these OS's work and not for any illegal purposes.

Enjoy.

I rooted last night, so can I re-install Sync? And how do I flash a rom now? Also, where do I find roms?

I am assuming your talking about HTC Sync. As far as I know, go ahead and do it.

How do you flash a new ROM? Here is a very long tutorial that I did via PM for another member:
"Just curious, what ROM are we installing here? I could be considered a "drifter" when it comes to ROMs. I go through them and try 'em out.

OK, this is what we are going to do (In this order):

First, lets make sure that ClockworkMod Recovery works for you. Open up ROM Manager, and choose "Reboot into Recovery". It will go into recovery and hopefully CWM will show up. If not, you will need to find the fix over at xda-developers.

Assuming that its working, step two: Get the ROM that you are wanting to flash. Download the file.

Then, put the phone on USB Debugging Mode and set it to "Disk Drive". Once AutoPlay comes up, choose to view the files of your SD Card.

Open up your Downloads folder on your computer, find the zip file that the ROM is in, and drag it over to the ROOT of your SD card. That means just drag it onto the card. DO NOT put it in any of the folders already there please!!!

Set the phone back to "Charge Only". And open up ROM Manager. From the app, choose "Install ROM from SD Card". Then, find the zip file that contains the ROM that you downloaded, and click on it. Once you do it should ask you if you want to backup the current ROM and if you want to wipe the data that is currently on the device. If you haven't already done a backup of the ROM, click on it. AND for future ROM attempts, ALWAYS choose to wipe the data already on your device.

It will then take you into ClockworkMod Recovery. From here it should automatically do the backup of the current ROM and then install the new ROM. This will take a while, so don't freak if it looks like nothing is happening. Once the ROM has been installed it will let you know. If it doesn't automatically reboot the phone with the new ROM, use the volume rocker to "Go Back", or if it has the option to reboot on that screen, do it. If you had to "Go Back", once there choose to "reboot system now".

That's it! You just installed a new ROM!

Also, if you run into a ROM that isn't functioning correctly, for example: the ROM could reboot over and over with no end, when you get the chance, unlock the phone and power it down. FAST, or it will reboot again. Now that your powered down go into HBOOT and select Recovery. It will take you into CWM again. If you have already used a different ROM that is still on your SD Card, choose to install the zip file. Once it is back, assuming that you have a backup of the ROM that you just re-installed, go back into ROM Manager and restore the backup that goes with that ROM. Or else you could find yourself back where you were before, rebooting and rebooting. This is speaking from personal experience. The ROM that was rebooting was called "[ROM] MIUI GINGERBREAD 1.3.25 - Lockscreen Lunacy". It is at xda so stay away from it.

If you need anything else, please let me know!

Happy ROMing,

Matt"

And you can find different ROMs right HERE. You will know if it is a ROM if the title of the thread starts with [ROM], or has [ROM] somewhere in the title.

Thank you so much! That's very helpful and it seems really easy now. I understood all that stuff :D (unlike the root instructions haha) And do I go into CWM and then put the ROM onto the SD card while it's in CWM or just go to CWM to see if it's working?

Does that mean I'll lose all my data every time I want to install a new ROM?

No, open ROM Manager and choose to install your ROM from the SD Card. Yes, it will wipe the data from your phone, but that is why we do the full backup first. ;) But if you haven't yet, check and make sure that CWM DOES work. If not, well, IDK...:thinking::thinking:

So, if you follow EVERY step (in that video), should be no issue?

question. did you save your gold card to the ORIGINAL MICROSD card in the phone?

No, i picked up a a 32gb card for all the movies and music i have. I did make one mistake, when making the selection for hboot, i held the power button too long and the phone restarted so terminal emulator would not work correctly. I just had to redo from that point on. And no, i followed mattbe213 instructions here. I may try installing a rom for tomorrow, enough nail bitting for today.

You will be fine. ROMs are pretty simple to install. As long as Clockwork is working. Just use my guides as a guide to ROM installation. The only ROM that I don't recommend is MIUI's ROM for the Inspire. I used it and for some reason, after about 20 minutes the phone started to reboot over and over again. I had to be quick to flash a different ROM, but it worked.

If you need anything else, let me know.

The weather on Sense? Are you using the Android Revolution 4G ROM? Sense 2.1 and all? If so, I'll work with it when I get home and see if I find a solution for you.

Matt

I just installed revolution. Still have the same issue with the weather. I'll have to dig deeper unless you find something. Per the thread it reccomends flashing the radio to 12.41.60.19_26.06.04.14_M. Does the phone need to be in any special mode?

To add, the mms apn in the network settings is now gone. I really liked this feature as I was able to send mms without turning the data on. Is there a way to re-create that setting?

Just go through with it. If something doesn't work properly, like Superuser or ROM Manager, just refer back to the root program in the "Fixes" menu. Fixes for Superuser and ROM Manager are listed. And if you really really don't want to mess with that, just un-root your phone. With the newest version of the root program (RC 2), I have had zero problems with anything. So you should be fine.

Mac users use Attn1's Inspire Hack Kit. It runs fine on Linux, OS X, and Windows (though Windows users seem to have the most difficulty due to USB driver conflicts, firewall config, and over-aggressive antivirus software). Bubby's One-Click is fundamentally Attn1's approach but with a .NET GUI replacing the batch file.
