Apple 3D Patent / HTC EVO 3D

I wonder if HTC came out with the EVO 3D just so Apple would take the bait. Then HTC could move onto the next best technology that will sell phones while Apple spits out their 3D phone. A few days ago I learned Apple filed for a 3D patent for their iphone.

LG had already announced their 3D phone - and HTC has been showing prototypes of 3D phones in Taiwan for months. Now Samsung is acquiring firms to get in on the act.

Looks more like everyone's taken the 3D bait. ;)

I wouldnt consider it as bait.

Its more a case of Apple falling behind, due to only releasing 1 phone(Technically) a year.

They can no longer keep up with the pace that Android is shipping out phones. Its not even about 4G phones....now its about 4G, Dual core, dock compatible, Outputting to HD TV and the like, with 3D possibly next.

Apple's 1 Great feature to the new phone a year is not cutting it anymore. I could see them trying to make a 3D iPhone now, probably to hold over for a 3D 4G iPhone the following year.

Let's remember that the iPhone is a good product - it makes a lot of people happy and it turns a great profit for its company.

Android has simply proven, first, that choice is good over one size fits all, and is now proving that when there's choice, there's bound to be higher-end as well as lower-end choices.

Android's success has green-lighted makers to come out with high-end choices like the 3D as a lower-risk proposition.

HTC made the first Android phone, so it kinda makes me smile that they're making the beast that will be the 3D.

Apple? More power to 'em, I say. ;)

I highly agree....I think its just Apple's philosophy to not get involved in different varieties(models) of the iPhone.

Apple has devout followers, that year to year, model to model, would buy a new iPhone annually. Not sure how devout some of these followers would be if a new phone was out every 6 months, or there was an iPhone A and B every year. It would lose its "it" factor.

Im wondering how a bigger iPhone will be even generally accepted. Due the fans cheer? Which means phones like the EVO have paved the way for larger screens.

There were rumors recently that this year might be the one where Apple brings out more than one phone.

And none of us noticed the loopholes Jobs left open when he said that no one would want a phone bigger than 4".

Completely agree that the popularity of the Evo's screen size schooled a lot of people, Apple included.

Lol yea...I hear it sometimes from my iPhone friends that the screen is so big on the EVO.

But yet when I'm looking at a Website(w/Flash), watching a Movie, or a live Event(Which gets people every time) they all love the size of the screen.

How easily opinions get changed.

iPhoners see the big screen and psychologically, they conclude the phone must be huge. In reality, the Evo is not that much bigger than the iPhone; it's just smarter about using existing real estate.

In order for Apple to succeed in any 3D attempt, it would have to really wow in execution. They tend not to release any feature that can be viewed as half-baked. 4G is a great example. I'm thinking that 3D on an iPad-sized screen with a large sweet spot for more comfy 3D viewing would be their angle.

I'm assuming when you mention sweet spot that you are referring to the glasses free variety of 3D since with glasses there's not really a sweet spot since it works well everywhere. If my assumption is correct than you unfortunately have it a bit backwards. With glasses free 3D, the larger the screen is the worse the sweet spot is. The parallax barrier just doesn't work well with a wide field of view which is exactly what you get as you start increasing display size.

True if paralax barriers were the only means to achieve a lenticular effect. Pure lenticular displays have been out for the big marketing shows in VERY large sizes, with very decent viewing angles, for a while now.

Fair enough but in the time frame of the next iPad i don't see lenticular displays being mature enough and/or cost effective enough to be a realistic choice.

Although I agree Apple makes appealing products, particularly in build quality, it's becoming clearer and clearer that they're falling a bit behind when it comes to tech.

Apple also doesn't gamble too much with unproven technology from what I can tell. It seems if something proves to be popular, despite their disdain, they will adopt it, even if it takes a year or two.

I, and a lot of people would be surprised and disappointed if the iPhone 5 did not have at least a 3.7 inch+ screen.

I imagine this year Apple will keep an eye out on the 3D trend, and if it indeed takes off as it has a chance of doing, there's a good chance next year the next iPhone, or a variant of it, will offer 3D.

My main problem with Apple is their attitude, I'm sure whatever 3D device they'd release would somehow be 'magical' or more 'revolutionary' than their competitors which have already done the same.

File the event as the same with front facing camera. Pioneered by HTC EVO 4G and "revolutionized" by Apple Ip4.

Yeah it was pure speculation on my part how Apple will bring 3D to their devices. 3D on a a larger screen like iPad (yes, autostereoscopic) would be worthy of Apple to jump into the 3d fray. I never said they'd be using current tech to achieve it (and therefore current limitations with sweet spot); the patents filed would imply that their 3D tech is different than what's currently going around, and they don't want copycats. My original point was that Apple doesn't release any feature until the experience is good. I would say that small sweet spot would not qualify as a good experience; therefore their 3D would not have this limitation (in theory). It's all speculation at this point.

See that one quote there could be a sign that things are changing. Facechat/time has had its issues, and I think Apple was forced to add it into the i4(FFC) because of the EVO and the influx of Android Phones to follow that would also have FFC.

Im not saying that Apple doesnt put out polished features, its just that now they are falling behind the competition.

What if 3D is a huge hit and the evolution of smartphones, Apple would be stuck another year behind if the i5 didnt come out with it. Hell if the i5 doesnt come out with 4G this year, that will put them almost 2years(Sprint) behind, 1 year with LTE behind other phone competitors by the time one is released.

I'm going slow on doubting what the next iPhone(s) might do.

By the time it's out, they'll have a lot of new processor experience under their belts, suppliers for 3D screens will be looking to make deals to bump production - and the big thing we learned from the antenna debacle that no one saw coming - the amazing RF testing facilities that have in-house, meaning: they could probably update to whatever radio(s) make sense to them.

There are very few iPhone variants serving worldwide - unlike HTCs or others. With the Thunderbolt owners complaining about battery life with LTE, Evo owners doing the same with WiMAX, and an expectation that LTE Advanced or WiMAX 2.0 is the future of 4G, it might even make sense to continue to let HTC plow that new ground until it all settles out.

Apple may be evil, but I have to give them props on good marketing and business decisions for the iPhone.

IOW - even they go 3D and 4G on their next phone(s) - they can't say "first" - and each iPhone announcement is always chock-full of some "first" even if they have to paint the rose red to do it.

Or - you could simply be 100% right.

This is shaping up to be quite the interesting year isn't it? :)
