Formatting SD Card

I've had a search around but I couldn't find an answer.

If I format my SD card what exactly do I lose? I'm not too bothered about pictures and music because I can back them up, or apps either because I've never paid for one. So is it safe to just go ahead and format? It's the bog standard SD card that came with the phone.

The reason I ask my SD card looks a little messy with installing and uninstalling apps that leave behind folders.

You lose everything, it wipes it completely.

But is it really no system that "locks" you purchase to your phone/sim?
Or do you have to buy them all over again if your phone/SD card fails?

Thanks JayCee and everybody else, I understand I'll lose everything but will it affect the phone in anyway, or will it be as if I'd just taken it out of the box, I'm not talking about a factory reset, I mean will the SD card just start from the beginning again?

I hope that's clear LOL I'm a lot dumber than I look

It won't affect the phone other than the promotional music and videos and HTC video will be wiped.
