Help Dealing with Phone Storage Space

189MB of phone storage space may seem like a lot, but once you start installing apps, you realize it's nothing. My apps take up a total of 2 (4x4) home screens and I use every single one of them on a daily, if not weekly, basis. Nothing irks me more than when someone tells me of a cool app I should check out so I go to do it, only to be disappointed that it's 3MB pre-installation, therefore rendering me incapable of even just trying it out because I'll get that annoying little "Low on Space" notification.

Now, I'm not going to go into an "I want 2.2 nao!!!" rant; really, the only reason I even WANT 2.2 on my phone is for Apps2SD. But when I go into the Manage Applications settings, and see that Google Maps, an app that came pre-installed on my phone so therefore I can't uninstall it, takes up a whopping 10MB, I get a little irritated. Same with Photobucket, another pre-installed app, which takes up almost 4MB. I don't use ANY of the apps that came pre-installed on my phone and it bugs me to no end I can't uninstall them to free up space and possibly use that space for apps I WILL use. I bet that space would equal about 20MB, maybe more.

I have no "flavor" apps on my phone, unless you consider the Amazon Kindle app one; all of my apps are for school, work and phone management purposes. I just wish us Ascend users didn't have to be so careful about apps and didn't have to keep a watchful eye on our phone storage space all the time.

Anyways, I just needed to vent a little about this to others who I imagine can empathize. This is the only thing that bothers me about my Ascend. Other than this, I'm absolutely in love with my very first Android. How do you guys feel about this and what, if anything, do you do to deal with it?

Tansey, there is hope. If you root your phone (check out the All Things Root forum), you can uninstall the bloatware you don't want and free up space on your phone. Also, you can overclock your phone which will speed it up. Rooting is a simple process: you download a single app and run it. Then you d/l Titanium Backup, back up your phone and uninstall the software you don't want. I've done it on my phone and it's great.

I've been told I should root my phone but I'm not tech savvy and although my husband can do almost anything when it comes to phones, computers, etc, even he said he's not comfortable attempting to root a phone unless it's a piece of junk phone we don't use and he can use it to practice. I'm just so afraid I'll brick my phone because at this point in time, my budget won't allow for the purchase of a new phone should something go wrong.

However, if I were to root my phone and all were to go well, would MyBackup Pro https://market.android.com/details?id=com.rerware.android.MyBackupPro&feature=search_result work in the place of Titanium Backup? I ask because I purchased MyBackup Pro shortly after getting my phone and I really don't want to have to purchase another backup app, especially one that's $6. If Titanium Backup is the only one that will work for rooted phones then I'll get it, but I'd prefer to use the current backup app I have if possible.

Do you have any links that explain rooting and everything else I need to know about doing everything you said that's explained in dumbed down terms?

If you want an easy solution, look into the app Link2SD.

The only requirement is that your phone is rooted.

There is a guide you can access that explains all about rooting and what you can do after you root:

There is something amazing about this phone.... its damn near impossible to brick.

Rooting is insanely easy with z4root and the most popular rom, icarus1.1 will let you move between 250mb and 2gigs of apps to your SD card.

I really recommend you look into it. If you need someone yo guide you just pm me and I can give you my Skype. I will do the whole process with you (on my phone at the same time) so you have no snags. From root to boot, I'll be right with you.

That so could be taken the wrong way lol

Your best option right now is Icarus like Toke said. If you can get an 8gig class 4 sd card and give it a 2 partition for your apps. Toke knows what he's doing. Read the threads a couple times to familiarize yourself with it first. Good luck and enjoy your phone.

I have a 16 gig SD card. Do I need to reformat it to set up a 2nd partition?

Yes. You might be able to use a partitioning software on your PC that can resize partitions without losing data, but if you want to be safe, just backup the data, wipe, and partition.

And as far as rooting, modding, etc, I recommend to Tansey to just start with rooting using z4root and install Link2SD, and start reading up on other things from there if you still feel you need more.

z4root is literally a download, a click, and a reboot. The worst that can happen is that it fails to root your phone, nothing else bad will happen. And you can trust Tokenpoke, the guy is constantly flashing his phone back and forth between different ROMs, and he'd know as well as anybody, if not better.

Okay, I tried resizing and then adding a new partition but it didn't work so I will go ahead and wipe the card and then do the partitioning. Thanks for the advice.

Thank you so much for the offer, I'm definitely going to consider that. I'll talk to my husband and see if maybe he wouldn't mind getting on Skype with you and doing the root on my phone, should I decide to do it. (I'd feel more comfortable having him do it as he has a ton of experience with cell phones and computers and would understand how to do everything a lot more than me, lol).
