I can't find anything out there like this: I would like to use a barcode scanner to file and database all my paper coupons. In my perfect world I would then be able to go into a store and use my barcode scanner to scan a product and see if I had a coupon for it. I hate flipping through all my coupons in the aisles, I get so frustrated.

It would also be amazing to have the app link up any stores that also have that item on sale, so I could save even more!

Is there anything out there like this....if not, who will make it for me??? Pretty please!!:):)

Is the barcode in a coupon the same as the product? I would think not. I'm not sure how an app would get info on what coupon you just scanned.

The info in a regular old 1d barcode is usually just a number. They need a database of info to translate that number into anything useful. The stores and manufacterers are the only ones with those databases. And when they partner with app makers for the purpose of offering cupons I dont think they use the same ones as they do in a paper coupon. It would make it impossible to track which of your coupons was bringing customers to your store.

That said, I know this isn't what you're asking for, but there are a bunch of product scanners that will give you price comparisions and coupons based on what product you scan.

ShopSavvy is a very popular one.

The paper coupons have a barcode on them that I am able to scan with my phone's barcode scanner. There are also online databases such as this one (Advanced Search - A Full Cup - Coupons) that allows you to search for coupons by the UPC code on the paper coupon. Would be great to have a way to scan the barcode, search that database, and track the coupons that you have. I am NOT a developer so maybe this just isn't possible.

Ah interesting, I didnt know there were online DBs -- that should certainly make it possible then. Nothing particularly difficult (from a dev perspective) in a barcode scan+database lookup.

I don't know of any apps that do this for sure, but maybe ShopSavy and similar ones do have this feature. You might try to google something like "Android coupon barcode" and see what turns up.

For an Android phone to be able to scan require some hardware chip help isn't it? Android did release a NFC SDK but sad to say not a lot of Android phones come built-in with NFC chip. In a few years time when NFC takes off like Infra-read, Blue-tooth we can see how it can help in this area.

Isn't the NFC talk lately surrounding Android about the ability to pay with your phone? What the OP is asking for is using the camera to read bar codes / coupons, not actually pay for the items.

Scanning bar codes is actually pretty easy, well not easy but common. You can just use the phone's camera.

There's a whole open source (Apache license) library called zxing (short for zebra crossing) that the people behind the app Barcode scanner released (some are google employees). It also can generate QR codes. It's what I use in Listables to help me generate QR codes for apps and contacts.

zxing - Multi-format 1D/2D barcode image processing library with clients for Android, Java - Google Project Hosting

Needless to say I'm a big fan of their work :)

Yeah NFC is something that requires hardware, and only the Nexus S supports it so far, but I fully expect it to take off in a big way.

Think of it as very very very short range (about 1 ft / 15 cm ) Bluetooth without having to pair devices. And the max speed is much slower than Bluetooth. The possibilities for NFC are very exciting though:

Lifehacker, tips and downloads for getting things done

While mostly it's being promoted for it's payment capabilities, the possible uses are much more than that.

I've actually been working on a coupon organizer app and just ran across your post today. You should give my app Coupon Caddy a try. Its in the market at https://market.android.com/details?id=com.couponCaddy. It doesn't have a barcode scan feature but that's because its impossible to scan a coupon barcode and figure out what product the coupon is actually for. The barcodes on a coupon don't actually encode the actual product but a "family" of products so a barcode on a coupon could actually be used for items that are not stated on the coupon if the the product falls into the same "family". Also many coupons barcodes don't even have the expiration date embedded. If you have any suggestions or questions please feel free to ask. Thanks!

I have been looking for an app that can save paper coupons as soon as I discovered KeyRing which is an app for saving all of those pesky member cards for stores like Kroger and Pet Supplies Plus.

KeyRing scans the barcode on the member cards and then saves a picture of the barcode and also allows the user to enter their own info regarding the card - like how much of a discount you get with each card, etc.

A coupon saver/organizer would need to simply take a picture of the barcode on the paper coupon and then manually allow users to enter the information regarding the coupon.

It would be tough to already have a list of stores to choose from for each coupon a user would save, but I am guessing that after manually inserting the name for a store that you have a coupon for, the app could remember the store when you go to add another coupon for it.

I am going to try two things and see if they work.

First, I am going to just take a picture of a coupon and see if it will scan at the store.

Second, I will add a coupon to the KeyRing app and treat it as a one-time use member card and see if the coupon can be redeemed at the store.

I will get back to you all with more news on how this works.
