It's not out yet and you will be able to get it from the HTC site.

There are custom rom versions of an early leaked release, but its incomplete and a lot of features don't work properly.

when it comes out officially.

1) HTC should have it on their website (though you may not have access to file as it wont have the carrier stuff in it).
2) carrier will have it on their website (eventually)
3) Custom rom will be made available (usually quicker than the carrier or maybe even HTC).

Why do you want it? Its safe if done correctly. It voids warranty too.

well Nexus one is out and in the wild plus android 2.1 SDk just got released so the last excuses are gone. Its up to HTC now.

All i want with 2.1 is:
A music player that pauses immediately after i press pause (not 2-3 seconds later)
Google maps which will turn with me as i turn and pinch-to-zoom
More multi-touch apps as i know pre 2.0 sdks don't easily offer that.

The first two i don't really see happening.

the inbuilt music player from htc does this already in my phone. No delays when i press pause at all...instant stop...
The second i dont even understand what you mean..if your refering to the pinch zoom in and out and turn by turn voice navigation then of course this will eventually come out maybe not alongside 2.1 but once released then they will update google maps...

Surely you also want working file tranfer via bluetooth...most essential...

I am wondering, could one of our major hopes for the 2.1 upgrade be, that the sdk/framework is simply better and app programmers will be releasing more and more >= 2.1 versions? (i know i can't get google goggles right now..)

I'm not really bothered about BT file transfer.
I used to do it a lot when i was in school.
But with my old phone which i had for a year and a half, i must have switch bluetooth on about 7 times....

And i don't mean turn by turn navigation.

Like, say i'm facing my house, i want my house to be above my little blue dot on the screen, and when i turn around, i want it to be behind me.

Also what would be awesome, is a way to connect googlemaps on your phone to your pc

so someone could watch where you'e going or where are.
(with your strict permission of course)

Its already there with google latitude. Have mine set up so I make sure maps is running on my hero before we set off to visit my mother and she can check our progress on her PC.

Yes im on orange I was impressed thatit only took a week to add the orange branding rubbish on. Without rooting it'd be nice to know how to get rid. Bookmarks are easy but the startup stuff is horid

Another thing I've decided I would like from 2.1 is not having to wait ages for the phone to start up.

Yes, however I'm not certain Bluetooth File Transfer will be included.

As for increased color depth, does the Hero have a 32bit color screen? I was under the impression that only phones like the Droid would benefit from the upgrade to 32bit color.

i know there is an app on market which allows you to do file transfer via bluetooth once you have 2.1. So atleast that will work.
