ViewSonic has FINALLY released an OTA update for the G-Tab! The new s/w version is 1.2-4349.

It should be available automatically to anyone still running the stock software, but you'd have to revert completely to stock to get it. If you update, remember that the new software might not play nice with modded ROMs, so use caution when rooting the device afterwards, at least until the mod devs have had a chance to test things out.

I know one big disadvantage...

It has a locked bootloader.. read this. I'll probably make a different thread

I copied this post from Gojimi in XDA.

ATTENTION - IF YOU ARE ON STOCK 4349+ or any MOD BASED OFF 4349+ USING THE NEW LOCKED BOOTLOADER! READ PLEASE!

Starting with the most recent update to Tap N Tap Viewsonic has introduced a new LOCKED Bootloader. This bootloader is locked in the sense that only a stock kernel will be allowed to boot on your device! This bootloader provides absolutely no advantage other than being able to boot any new STOCK kernels. Since we don't want the STOCK KERNEL and would rather prefer one of Pershoot's standard and newly Overclocked kernels or one of Clemsysn's kernels on MOST of our Modded ROM's you must Downgrade your bootloader and TNT Version before you flash a new kernel or a new ROM.

Please download the following downgrade update.zip and place it on your sdcard renaming it to "update.zip".

http://www.gtabdevs.com/releases/4349_Downgrade.zip

Then power down your device. And power back up while holding the power button and vol + till your display says "recovery key detected" in the top left corner.

Using the volume keys to navigate up/down in the menu highlight "Apply Internal update.zip" if you copied the update.zip to the internal memory or "Apply External SDCard update.zip" if you happened to place it on an external SDCard and then inserted it before booting to recovery. Now select the menu choice using the menu key.

This process will take a few minutes. You will see a Box with an arrow and a progress bar while it applies the update.... when it is finished it will reboot to make the changes. Once the changes are complete your tablet will boot into Tap N Tap version 3588 (cringe).

You are now free to follow all the tutorials about installing CWM and/or Kernels/Roms.

Thank you and good luck.

Yeah, so basically the short version is this:

ONLY go through with the OTA upgrade if you're running the stock G-Tab software -- with no mods or enhancements -- AND if you don't plan to experiment with modded ROMS in the immediate future. The OTA and modded ROMS are not compatible, and trying to combine them is asking for trouble.

Those of us who are running alternate ROMS should just sit tight ... almost certainly, the devs of some of those ROMS will figure out how to include most of the enhancements the OTA provides.

I thought so too, but Roebeet already tried a preliminary version a while back to semi-disastrous results. Viewsonic has gone the suck butt route for updates.

Yeah, not sure why VS used a locked bootloader. I wonder if google had anything to do with it. Maybe they said to VS...if you want us to release HC to you, you gotta have a locked bootloader like motorola does. Its just weird that VS went this route when they were encouraging their users to go to XDA and check out the mods???

Yup, you're good! Imagine! This is what most people were greeted with when they got their gtablets. How sad, right?!?

Ok, now head over to the Root thread! :D
