Turn old Android phone into MP3 player

Have any of you turned one of your old Android phones into a dedicated music player? I have a couple old Android phones laying around, DX, Droid, Citrus, and a G1 and I was hoping to turn one into a dedicated music player.

The reason I want to do this, is because I travel and don't like using my phone as my music player. I don't like getting off the plane and having a dead battery.

I upgraded my HTC Magic to a Samsung Captivate and stuck my Magic in a drawer until my daughter dropped her Ipod touch in the toilet! I gave her my old Magic which she uses just like she did her touch. Works the same for her except the only drawback is that it won't work with her docking station. She copied her music, set up her email, downloads apps from the Market and even likes it better as it has camera and video!

Did you have any problems getting past the "activate" screen without a SIM card?

I use my HTC Hero as an mp3 player. The battery life is decent, if I stick to whats on my SD card I can get a couple days out of it, with wifi on(with Pandora playing) I only get about a day, which is basically what I get on my Evo with heavy usage. I like using an old Android phone as my mp3 because when my Evo's battery is low I can hop on wifi and do my general browsing with it and keep the Evo for phone calls and text messaging.

I've relegated my old Nokia N97 to being a music player. I just began digitizing all of my CD's, LP's, 45's and cassettes this year. I was putting the music onto my Desire Z, but realised that it doesn't have enough storage (8GB) to hold all of my music. My N97 has 32GB of storage and was doing absolutely nothing, so I decided to use it as a music player only.

The cool thing is that the N97 has an FM transmitter, so I can listen to it on my radio. On a portable stereo or stereo receiver, it works pretty well since I can place my phone right beside the antenna. It doesn't work that well in my car. The antenna is somewhere hidden in my dash and it picks up too much interference from actual radio stations. I cannot seem to find an unused FM frequency that has no interference on my car's radio. For playing my music in a car, I use an adapter that connects the headphone jack of my N97 to the tape deck of my car. (I think I have one of the last cars that came with a tape deck and no auxiliary port.)

What sucks about the N97 is that I cannot see the album covers. I can see them on my PC, on my Desire Z, but not on my N97. I just see the generic note icon for all of my songs.

Another thing that sucks is that when I turn off my N97, it does not remember the last song I played. I set it to random, but every time in my car, I probably only listen to 5-10 songs at a time on each drive. The next drive after turning my phone off and on (to conserver power), it may repeat some songs. My Desire Z remembers the last song I played and as long as I do not add songs to my library, will go through the shuffled sequence of songs playing each song once.

None of these and other short comings are that big of a deal. I figured that for a supposedly top of the line phone (at one point in time), it feels very unrefined even for a very simple function such as a music player. I have considered purchasing an SD card for my Desire Z, but felt it wasn't worth spending the money on it.

Yes remove the SIM, and one has an Android media player.

It would be awesome is you could turn your phone intro an media player with browser and wireless capabilities, but yet runs a tiny version of android hat consumes a lot less battery and has the phone features virtually nonexistent like android antivirus(no idea if this is valid). I want something that boots into an android media player and has loads of battery life and a frkn tiny battery consuming system.
