Root Question about rooting..

I'm pretty new to android and just got my first one 2 days ago, (the g2x). So i did some research on rooting and it didn't seem too bad. The only reason i wanted to do this was because of battery life issues. The battery life was way shorter than i expected. I tried doing the charge cycles, and I'm on my fourth cycle and have not seen a big change in battery life. So, if i DO root, will my battery life expectancy go up? Also, Gingerbread was announced on coming out 'soon' for the G2x. If decide to root, can i still upgrade to Gingerbread? Will it be un-rooted with the upgrade? Sorry if they're lame questions, I'm still pretty nooby =/. Thanks!

I believe you need certain software after you root that will improve battery life. I don't have much of a problem with battery life though (will last all day (9am to 12am) with wireless on and some game play. Will be about 25% left. And will be down to about 80% with wireless off and some talking).

As for what I have read about rooting the upgrading is that rooting will stop certain phones from updating, not sure on G2X though. You will need to unroot and upgrade. There may be an upgrade you can do if your phone is rooted though (not at all sure on this). Sorry I am not much help.

Thanks for the help, but just wondering, did your phone always come with descent battery life? I unplugged mine this morning at 9am, its 1pm right now, and i have 69% battery left. I have 4g turned off (using wifi), screen at 20% brightness, and all i did today was send about 20 texts, downloaded 4 apps, and checked facebook like twice. Is that normal? I don't have any excess apps running either. If yours did come with a mediocre battery life, what did you do to improve it?

I didn't really do anything, it has always been this way. I charge it every night and it lasts the whole day. 4G is on too. Wifi drains it significantly more for me than 4G. Do you turn off wifi when you are not using it?

Yeah i do. I remember reading somewhere that 4G took more battery power than wifi did. Not sure. down to 64% already. I have to recharge it again because I'm going out soon =/. Maybe ill buy a spare battery if this keeps up..

I would recommend rooting it, as it looks very easy (will be rooting myself soon). I think it is pretty easy to unroot as well, so updating shouldn't be a problem. Whatever the program is that you need for saving battery life, you will have to wait for someone who actually knows about that.

I got the g2x on launch day. Exchanged it for another today to see if battery and reboot issues would go away.
There's plenty of reports online about units being bad - you can evaluate how true that is, and I'll see if my replacement is any better.

Rooting will not improve your battery life (as others have stated), and it remains unknown how they plan on rolling out the update for this device. If it's over the air, and you've removed system files/apps, it will probably fail. If it's over the wire (from a computer), it'll most definitely get rid of the root but the update should be fine.
Losing root is not a big deal because someone will find a way to root it shortly.

That being said, I would hold off on rooting the device until some roms come out so you can flash those. Cyanogen Mod will be coming out with CM7 for the G2x soon (this week hopefully), and that will already have gingerbread with additional customization options built in. I've used his roms on different devices and love it. I wish cyanogen would get together with sense to make a baby - it'd be so beautiful...the perfect UI!

YAY! I will wait for his release then and upgrade. I am guessing it reformats the phone so my apps will have to reinstall? That isn't that big of a deal really.

yup you'll need to re-do everything the first time flashing any entirely new rom.
