Good Contacts Widget

There is a free one on Appbrain (and in the market). It does horizontal. I never used it though. You can always place contact shortcuts on your homepage.

Here's the link for the app on appbrain:
Contact Widget - Android app on AppBrain

This does exactly the same thing as the stock "favorites". The only difference is it makes the picture a little bitter and doesn't say the name underneath it.

I use Launcherpro and you can take one of your open screens, press and hold to add widget, choose shortcut, then people. It will take you to your contacts. Hit a contact and then choose what option you want (text, call, email, etc). It will put that contact on that page with the option you chose. Looks like you can get 16 contacts on a page.

I know that the DX has a Widget that allows you to pick a person, and it will display a squads picture. Then, you can grab the bottom bar and drag it downward to reveal multiple different access points (call, text, email). Essentially, the widget allows you to expand contact options for an individual people.

When I was playing with my brother's DX, I saw that he had his wife's cell phone call option only available, but he then dragged the bar down, and it revealed her office phone. Normally, he leaves that visible as well, but since we were all on vacation, it wasn't necessary.

Anyway, a widget like that would be useful.

I put a folder on my home screen and called it "Speed Dial"

In the folder are a bunch of shortcuts to people.
so I click "SpeedDial" and a nice window pops up with options.

I think it looks pretty smooth and puts a bunch of icons one click off the home screen.

Perfect? No.

This is exactly what folders are made for and it's so much better than a widget! I have four folders set up and can access 64 contacts much faster and with more flexibility that any widget has been able to provide. Widgets are cool but Android provides a much better way of doing this task and it takes less system resources too!

I did something similar as well. I have a "cell" folder, a "home" folder, etc. Even a "text" folder so that I can quickly get a text going.

Of course, pressing and holding the search button, and then speaking "call joe smith on mobile" works just fine as well.
