Help MP3 format stopped playing

I'm having a strange problem (at least I think it's strange). My phone no longer detects MP3 files. I can see them in the file browser, but when I try to play them, it says "the player does not support this type of file." This is a bit problematic, considering I use MP3s for my alarms. I was late to work yesterday, and I was almost late today.

I powered down the phone and reseated the battery, which appeared to have fixed it, but it wasn't working when I woke up this morning. The only thing I've done is plug it in to the USB cable to charge at night. Any ideas?

Three solutions.
1. download an other media player from market

2. Do a factory reset with the phone

3. I see you've rooted your phone. Dit you also flash it (if so relash)
this could solve the problem.

I'm trying to avoid the factory reset. I hate doing them. Do you have any recommendations for backing up apps\data?

I'm still troubleshooting, but it appears I lose functionality after I plug it in via USB for more than an hour, but I can't confirm this. I usually don't notice it doesn't work until I wake up the next morning to no alarms and an hour late to work.

I have ClockworkMod on there, but I don't see how the ROM manager would interfere with the Android OS. This only started happening about a week ago, and I've seen a number of people posting this problem. Wondering if something happened recently with an update to a popular application.

I imagine downloading a third-party media player wouldn't help if MP3s aren't recognized by any music playing service on the phone, like ringtones or alarm clock.

This has happened to me a couple of times on my SGS and once on my Galaxy Tab. You'll probably find it won't play video either - saying the format is not supported, when it is. I have had to recently do a factory restore [for other reasons] and this has both speeded the phone up, sorted my other problems and the mp3 problem hasn't recurred. Suggest you take a deep breath and go for it , or wait for 2.3 upgrade and do it all then.
