IMO, I don't see any benefits except for the Unlimited plans and pre-pay plans. Also, if VZW is planning to require all 3G phones to have a data plan, then why would anyone get a non-smartphone?

Its only for 3G multimedia phones, not all 3G phones. So folks can still get their non-smartphone flip-phone without multimedia capability.

Plus, on those 3G phones, data plans start at 9.99 which is not a bad deal for mobile web and the like.

9.99 for 25mbs is a ****ing rip off. Wtf verizon...for 9.99 I could get 500mbs on a euro network that rapes Verizon's...I bet voda is even better than that.

Yeah, it's a rip off. My wife has the Rogue and she had the $9.99 plan but with her using it only to check on twitter feeds and occasional glance at news sites, those 25mbs were gone by mid month. I ended up changing her to the connect plan which isn't too bad but now they even got rid of that plan. Geeeez, Verizon is crazy. I know they have the "best" network but I think it's getting to their heads. Not sure how competitive those pricing plans are.

But if you think about it, most phones that are coming out are going to be multimedia 3G phones. Non multimedia 3G phones are going to be obsolete and Phone manufacturers aren't going to make too many of those phones any longer. I understand that VZW wants to be profitable and the money is with Multimedia 3G phone users but dang can they be more subtle about it. I hate it that they try to make it sound like that they are trying to help and not hurt consumers but with these plan changes and the increase of ETF, I don't see them helping at all.

It looks like it will be $99.99 for the talk and text part and $29.99 X 2 for the data. So it'll be roughly, $160 plus tax? They are basically trying to lure people in just getting the unlimited plans. What ticks me off is that it looks like they are going to take away the FF option for the 1400 minute family plan.

Do you have any idea what 25mb translates to on a non-smartphone device? My old LG flip phone with mobile web would never get close to 25 mb of searching the web through VZW's portal.

Its not the same thing as searching the internet with full html. Many of the older phones still utilize the web portal as their "internet" and 25mb can provide a lot of browsing time for many people.

Don't worry folks. This is a last hurrah. Hold on for another two years and things will level off with more low-price alternatives. Once LTE takes ahold and most of the US carriers are SIM-based, you'll see more Euro-like competition for customers.

I would imagine if they do, then they will be in breach of contract and it will allow you to leave without paying the ETF. I just went through the same thing with Sprint. They added a $4.99 fee to all accounts with a spending limit. I just got out of my contract with them without paying an ETF.

No, but existing customers can re-sign new contracts to take advantage of the new prices if they choose.

I am going to change plans, but will not save any money. Currently I am on 2100 minute voice plan and pay $150 for the first 2 lines (I have 3 additional lines). I am going to switch to the "Unlimited Family Plan" for $150 for the first 2 lines that will give me unlimited voice and text. Works for me (although I am going to examine the plans carefully to make sure any of the extra lines remain the same price)...

But on 3G, I think we are safe. The article (and everything I have seen mentioned on the subject) seems to imply that this will be the pricing method for 4G (LTE). I think it sucks that they are going to do this, but it won't reach many customers until 2011 (for handsets anyway, the hotspots will come out before then)...
