Best Case For Optimus V

Would a body glove suffice? Or should I just otterbox? It just seems too much to pay $25 for a case.

Otterbox has been discussed a bit previously in the thread along with photos. It is the Otterbox Commuter for LG Optimus. It used to say Optimus S, but now is just Optimus.

The screen protector doesn't have the notch cut out for the proximity sensor. I picked up a 5 pack of screens for a buck or two when I got my Otterbox.

It is what tells the phone when it is up to your face (so it turns off the screen) or not against your face (so it turns back on the screen). If you cover it, it may not function correctly.

About two weeks ago my V fell from the kitchen counter and hit the floor. Battery door popped off and battery went flying. A bit of a panic attack ensued but once it was back together it lit-up like a champ. After that I started paying serious attention to this thread. Ended up with the Otter Box that has been well discussed earlier and am very happy with it. As far as protection is concerned I believe the only thing better for total protection is a leather case/wallet that engulfs the whole phone but I didn't want that. The Otter box covers everything except the 4 hard buttons on front and the screen (although it comes with a nice screen protector). The dual material design looks cool too. The only thing that bugs me is it hides the beautiful svelte design of the phone itself. As vain as it seems part of the reason I bought the phone is it's size and looks. Who wants a log for a phone?

I'm keeping my Otter but just sprang for this one too. Amazon.com: LG Optimus S Sprint Gels: Electronics . It looks like one of the least obtrusive of the gel type wrap-around covers. I'll use my "Hummer-like" Otter Box while on the shop floor or in the woods and the "Vette-like" Gel when out to dinner etc. Okay, okay. A bit over the top perhaps but It makes me happy. BTW- the Otter Box comes off in seconds.

Also, the fliptop or folding case that the Otterbox goes inside--do you have to take your phone out of the case to use it? Seems like a hassle to take it out of the case, but looks like you would need to keep the phone in the case to protect it. Still haven't purchased a phone, but want to know what kind of cover to get so I can have it when I get the phone.

Thanks for the opinions in this thread,... Otterbox looks really nice but i'm going to go with the Bodyglove for now.

The screen turns off so your face isn't pressing the buttons on screen. I'm sure it saves battery life too.

One poster said his Optimus V fit into the Optimus case with the Otterbox on it. Mine absolutely will not even come close. There was another flip top case discussed that is larger than the case made for the Optimus by the same company as the one I posted. I still haven't gotten around to ordering one yet though. For now I just tuck my phone in the top of my kilt or stuff it into my sporran.

I've been using the body glove for a few months now and it works great. I've dropped the phone once, with the cover on, and it did its job. Also, there is a removable portion on the the back of the cover that allows you to connect a belt clip that can double as a phone stand, which is all included with the cover.

I got my Body Glove case today from Amazon (see above) and I'm liking it so far. The best feature, imo, is the kickstand. Love it!

btw, I've dropped my phone I don't know how many times now. It pops apart and the battery flies out, and I just put it all back together and keep going (after it reboots, of course). I'm hoping the case will help with that.

Power and volume up- hold both down for a few secs and it will reboot the V.

Unfortunately, the instruction manual just indicates that they are to the right and/or left of the Virgin Mobile logo, but that is a wide area and since they are under the black part of the glass I can't really tell the exact location. Someone in this thread earlier linked a 5 pack of screen protectors that had a notch cut out for the proximity sensor(s), so far that seems like the best indicator of where they are.

Guys I'm really having a hard time deciding between the body glove and the otterbox.

I don't like the fact that one person in this thread has problems with the otterbox making his battery overheat. I live in a hot climate. Plus it just looks so bulky.

But then the body glove doesn't cover the charger, and headphone ports, so I might get dust under my screen. I'm also not crazy about the body glove clip making me carry my phone with the screen facing out. Seems like if I bumped into something it would break my screen.

So I'm stuck. They both have great pros and cons. Maybe I should just flip a coin.

You can see it if you take a really bright flashlight (I used a LED light) and shine it in the area to the left of the VM logo. About halfway between the logo and left edge of screen. It will be two holes about 1mm in diameter.

I went with the Otter and think it is a really good case. A little bigger than the BG to be sure, but the protection is superior. I live in a warm climate and my phone has not overheated. As long as you are not charging it while using the GPS with it sitting on the dash on a sunny day and streaming Pandora, you should be fine.

Why would you want to cover up the virgin mobile logo? Are you ashamed that you're getting service that's almost as good as the big companies but for less than half the price? Now if I had an AT&T logo, I'd be embarrassed about that. May as well have "sucker" written on my phone.

Anyhoo, I don't think you're going to find it. The logo is right under the speaker, so cases don't cover that area. Maybe you could just find a sticker you like and put it over the logo.

I have no doubts that the otterbox would give better protection, but in the end it came down to looks. I just hated the way the otterbox looked. I ended up getting the body glove and I'm pretty happy with it. It hardly adds any bulk or weight, has good grip and feel in my hand, makes the phone look at least as awesome as it did naked, if not moreso.

Overall I'm happy with it. I will say that the clip I still think might be useless, because every time I hook it on my belt it seems like I'm constantly worried about brushing up against things and breaking my screen, so I may opt to just get a leather hoster that can carry it with the screen facing in instead of out. The kickstand would be cool if you watched a lot of videos on your phone, which I don't, so it's not a big loss for me.

fyi... Just got my otterbox case and the proximity sensor works perfectly with the included screen protector affixed. No cut out needed.

I've had BG cases in the past and liked them, but the button on the new BG for the OV is smaller than the previous models. If you try to use a clip other than the one that comes with it be careful. My phone kept popping out of older clips. On the bright side the case protected the phone each time. The worst fall was on a tile floor and that was the only time out of four that the case popped off. I wear a wide gun belt at work and had a extra large clip from sprint that fit the belt and the earlier buttons. Other than the button size deal I love the BG case.

Added info: Ordered replacement button kit from BG. Included the larger style button, a spare smaller button and two clips, one to fit each button. Problem solved. Now I truly love the Body Glove case and have some extra clips.

I'm quoting myself here so anyone interested won't have to look back in the thread.

Having received the sprint gels I want to clarify that the product's description is a bit of a misnomer. Sprint "Gels" are not gel in the sense you might expect. They're more of a rubberized plastic. Kind of hard/stiff, not stretchy and elastic like the Otter Box or other "Gel" type cases. I'm sure they provide (relatively) inexpensive protection; ie they'd keep the parts from flying should you drop your phone, but they're not as shock resistant as real gel. In addition, the stiffness make them harder to install/remove than the Otter Box (and likely harder than the BG which I don't have and can't speak too).

Plus, having tried them both the Otter doesn't add appreciable size and weight over a simpler case design which was the whole point of doing this experiment.

I keep my Otter installed all the time.

i use ebay style hard case plus i ghost armored the whole phone. optimus s worked fine for the V. go to the mall/store location if u can because they put it on for you.
