Hello

Well, i have a htc hero on orange and i rooted it last year, i wasnt to happy with the root but put up with it.
I then went on to try and un root my phone. im not to sure what happened or what i did wrong, but i just couldnt unroot it.

So i have now decided to put my device into clockwork recovery and chose 'restore' and chose one of my previous back ups, i then pressed 'reboot' and now everytime i load my phone it gets stuck on the HERO screen, however i can still boot into recover.

I have not achieved my goal of unrooting my htc and really dont have a clue what to do as i am a bit of a noob :/ someone please help asap.

Sorry for the strange explanation as i really didnt know how to describe it but feel free to ask.
one last thing, i think the rom my hero was on was a modaco.

Thanks, Tom

Hi Tom,

Was your Hero supplied via Orange or a reseller? Depending on whether it was branded or not, go to here and download either the Orange or the generic 2.73.xxx.xx update. Connect your handset to the PC and run the update utility to return your handset to a completely stock state. It will be totally wiped in the process so ensure you have necessary backups. The external memory card is unaffected and data there is safe.

Hey Tom,

So am I right in thinking the phone is still getting stuck whilst booting? You may have already tried it, but the thing to do would be to remove the battery for 30 seconds and then put it back in before holding home + power to boot into recovery. Does that help at all?

The USB error could be due to the boot loop, but that USB error is very common even with a working phone. Again, first thing I would try would be a battery pull to make sure it's properly switched off and then running the RUU.

You would also be doing yourself a favour, if at all possible, to use a windows XP machine rather than Vista/7. The USB connection error is far less common with XP, for whatever reason.

i have done all of that and still doesnt work. i am running on xp machine aswell.
it says in the readme with the RUU that the phone has to be turned ON with the lock screen disabled, and i think it isnt doing it because it cannot turn on? am i right? is there anyway to get round this ?

and i also get an error message when trying to download the htc rom, and i have tried to download again

Have you tried simply performing a full wipe/factory reset from recovery? That might allow the handset to boot, after which you should be able to use the RUU program to restore the stock ROM.

My other suggestion, as you can still access recovery mode, is to flash the custom ROM again to get the device to a working state from which you can continue.

Oh, you can actually boot to recovery? I missed that.

What he said :)

I did not really want to factory reset my phone but that seems the only option atm. Also i do not have the rom i used on my sd card :S and cannot access my sd from my computer either.

Unfortunately I don't think there's any way to recover the phone without performing a factory reset. You could re-restore the same nand backup that caused this problem, but that's a long shot.

You can access the SD card when the phone is in recovery mode. I don't have the same recovery menu as you, but it should be under mounts and storage and called enable MS/mount USB storage or something along those lines.

when i factory reset it, it puts it back to the modaco rom i was previously using

That's the aim.... to get it back to a state that allows it to boot up correctly.

when i try to load that utility program i get an error message.

I'm hoping that the error is due to the handset not booting. Once that's corrected you'll hopefully be able to use the RUU to return to stock.
