Help Root phone or extended battery???

I have a MyTouch4g. I have attempted to permanently root the phone. Did not work, not did I mess up my phone. The instructions all over the internet on various ways to root the phone are ridiculous and not worth the effort due to the complications involved.

So I thought getting an extended (1700 mah) battery would work. I got the Trexcell 1700 from amazon.com. It sucked. I am returning it.

DOES ANYBODY, HAVE A CLEAR SIMPLE SOLUTION to making the battery last??? I have the gps and wifi off, and my settings are minimal. There has to be some type of solution to either simply root the phone without being a rocket scientist OR a BATTERY THAT IS BETTER. It's 2011, not 1993, why aren't there simpler solutions????????

Download the free app Batteyguard. I know it's more or less a task killer, but I've tried watchdog & Advanced Task Killer and got rid of them both.

Batteryguard has worked wonders in the 3 days I've had it. It REALLY made a difference in the lifespan of a charge for me, and my wife's MT4G, too.

Check out the sticky at the top of the list about battery life, and you'll find my comments at the end of the thread (so as not to be redundant here).

I haven't changed my mind about the app yet. It works or so it appears after 72 hrs of usage. I have no idea if the $$ version is any better- but this might be the best free app I've used yet.

Thanks for the App suggestion, but when I looked it up in the android market, almost every review was One Star and said it was Malware or messed up the phone. So I am suspicious in downloading that.
I am looking for somebody to suggest an actual battery out there that truly works longer than the stock battery, OR how to ROOT the phone to get rid of the BS pre-installed software.

I was having problems with Root off, I have 86 bootloader, I finally went with the Perm S=off and it now works very well. After installing a new Rom battery life is exceptional, it was horrible.

Use Juice Defender. It is not a task killer (task killers mess up your phone and don't really help your battery life). It turns off your data when your screen is off and turns it back on when your screen is on. It'll easily double your battery life.

I can say that the only weird behavior with my phone was happening long before I downloaded Battery Guard. I can also say that it hasn't seemed to mess up my phone, as would a normal "app killer". I don't see any malware signs here whatsoever. YMMV.

Still getting FABULOUS battery life with this app... at least a 200-300% improvement. I would also look into 'juice defender' that aysiu suggested. I might try that one myself, although I've no complaints or negative experience with Batteryguard so far.

Somebody has to be the original developer of this app. There are/were at least 3 developers offering this app, one from Droid007 has been removed, but the app Batteryguard (blue battery icon) by AndroidIntelligence is still available, and rates VERY highly. I see no "malware" claims here. This is the one I have. Not many shown reviews, though. Hmmm...

I've also found another variant, (Batteryguard+Battery Upgrade) by "Droid Genius"... many more downloads from what I can see, BUT one user says: "Spyware. Do not install. Chargers you additional fees and spams you with alerts. Developer deletes reviews!!"

Again, I'm quoting this directly from the info on appbrain.com. So just be careful which one you download from which developer.

That said, I'm curious as to why the variant I downloaded only has reviews posted today (5/31/11), but 160+ downloads... hmmm....

This is the page that I used to figure out how to root my myTouch4G. I was having trouble getting ADB to recognize that my phone was connected to my PC, but I figured out that if you mount your SD card to the PC, there is a file on it called "HTCDriver.exe" (or something very similar). Just run this file and it installs the drivers needed for ADB to recognize the phone. Basically just follow the temporary root section first and then the permanent section and you will be fully rooted.

P.S. I use Microsoft security essentials, and it kept telling me that one of the files was infected (it was one of the files in the "Temporary Root" download called "rage"), so just an fyi if you get a message like that.

If you're having trouble understanding part of the walkthrough, let me know and I will try to explain it better for you. I don't check this forum every day (usually just check it at work during down-time), but I will try to get back to you as soon as I can.

The root idea is nice to clear clutter but in reality I can see that the programs I don't want are not using any memory therefore cannot directly contribute to fast battery loss. I have minimized settings, keep GPS off, only on when needed, and am very efficient with keeping certain apps running. I got Android Assistant and its doing a good job.
Regardless, I don't think rooting the phone or efficiency apps are the best ways. Bottomline is everybody wants to have the most use out of their phone since that is the point of having a powerful android phone, therefore the only thing that makes sense is an AFTER-MARKET BATTERY that works right. Or if HTC or TMOBILE was smart they would create an extended battery power battery and sell it.

So I think that if some manufacturer puts out something above 1600 that truly "works" that would be the best solution. Until then, all these software methods are a false sense of security. Does anyone know a battery out there?

Sounds like you just dont want to listen to anyone... I have had 5 Android phones and they ALL suck until I root them and install CM7 on it.. I can control the speed of the CPU and there is no Sense which tends to kill the battery.

Getting an extended battery will not fix your issue. its a power management problem. You need to get juicedefender or something like that to make it better and even then rooting is the best you can do.

If rooting is not an option, then spend $75 and get the extended battery and download juicedefender and see what happens but I bet you that you will be 10X happier rooting the phone... its so much faster and battery life is amazing.

I appreciate the suggestion on rooting and I agree that it is probably the best solution. But does anybody have a simplified step by step guide that doesn't involve multiple items to download and over 20 different steps?

Here is a snippet from one website I came across just to show how stupid and ridiculous it is to root an android (who has time for this???):

2. Run VISIONary to gain temp root.
Now I am going to run two different sets of instructions (you'll understand why in a minute):
Terminal Emulator Method
3a. Start terminal emulator up on your device.(I prefer this method b/c you can see the output.)
a. type "su" + enter to gain root privileges.
b. Type "cd /sdcard/root" + enter.
c. Type "sh root.sh" + enter.
d. Follow the on screen prompts.
File Explorer Method
3b. Start up root explorer, sufbs, or some other type of file browser with root privileges.
a. Navigate to /sdcard/root on your device.
b. Click on root.sh and allow it to run. Some file browsers ask you if you want to or not.

I personally would do both, buy the battery and root the phone. There's nothing wrong with having the best of both worlds right. This will be easier for you to do as far as rooting though, doesn't require adb to be installed and there are more benefits to using this method.

I posted this for some one else earlier but I guess it can't hurt to have the link in two places here you go...:[GUIDE] Permanent Root with Visionary/gfree (No ADB Required) - xda-developers again YES it says its for the G2 but this method is standard no matter what device you have, I've used it on 4 different HTC devices and never had an issue. Very simple and straight to the point. Good Luck....
