Root LeeDroid - experience so far

Hi all. Recently flashed the latest release of LeeDroid (June 1 release), and I thought I'd share early experience.

My main motivation was to improve battery life, and I've had mixed experiences so far. Yesterday I left the phone on my desk for 2 hours with WiFi and mobile internet on. I was shocked to discover that my battery lost about 20%, although i left synch on default. However, with WiFi and mobile internet off it lost 2% in 6.5 hours overnight.

I'm thinking that mobile internet is consuming less battery than wifi, although I need to do more testing.

Lesson learned? I think I need to try flashing the recommended radio (although this scares me quite a lot), in a bid to improve WiFi power consumption.

Otherwise, it's a slick ROM. Very smooth, and I'm loving the CRT animation. Might try the Sense 3.0 addon when I have the battery performing properly. Deffo gonna stick with it.

Pretty much sums up my experience with it so far except my battery life certainly isn't that bad. I left it over night with WiFi on and it drops about 5-8% (not being used for 7 or so hours). I'm not syncing though.

I wiped my battery stats via clockwork last night so I'll see how my battery fares over the next couple of days before I decide on flashing a new radio.

Incidentally, I thought it was the other way around, WiFi consumed more battery than 3G?

I suggest downloading current widget and plonking it on your homescreen. Whenever I turn mine on having let it rest with either mobile data/wifi for 2-3 hours I'm still rocking 95% minimum sometimes only 1% and hour can be expected if I haven't got anything syncing. I do however have a predominantly black wallpaper and using Extended Controls for adjusting my backlight on a 6 step process I usually only have it on the second or third step.

Hi El P. I haven't made any attempt to optimise my battery use yet, so that might help. Just that I was exoecting better when the phone was sitting on my desk, 2 meters from the router. Seems a bit better at home, so maybe it's a rubbish router at work, but batteryuse seemed less than this with stock ROM. Still early days mind.

Good call on recalibrating the battery. Hadn't thought of that. My battery is currently under 10%, so I might justclear my battery stats in a bit, and then recharge to 100%.

In order to properly wipe the stats, as Stu said, place the currentwidget widget on your homescreen and start charging your battery. When the phone reports it's fully charged, unless currentwidget shows 0 mAh, it's not full and is still charging. Only when it displays 0 mAh has it stopped accepting charge and is actually at full capacity. Once in that state, wipe your battery stats in Clockwork (it's in the advanced submenu).

The full charging thing just means that 1/some of the cells are fully charged and not all. As far as I'm aware, as soon as the phone sees any of the cells at full capacity, it'll claim the battery is fully charged.

Incidentally, I always get worse battery performance at work too.

Thanks for that - will do!

How do you get to the advanced submenu. When I open ROM Manager where do I go from there

You can only do it via the recovery menu it's self as far as I'm aware. You'll need to hit reboot into recovery in ROM Manager and then, using the volume buttons to navigate and the power button to select, pick advanced and then wipe battery stats.

From ROM Manager, select "Reboot into Recovery", it'll take you into clockwork recovery and it's the bottom option -

Xyro got in there before me..

Hi Pothers. It's the 'advanced' submenu of Clockwork Recovery, which can be reached via the 2nd option in ROM Manager.

Lol. By the way, I ended up using a free app from the market called Battery Calibration, which allows you to purge the battery stats without booting into recovery. At the moment, losing about 4% per hour, but I've done about an hour (maybe 1.5) of browsing in the past 4 hours. The weekend might not be the best time to evaluate battery life for me, as the phone is rarely out of my hand!

Just a quick tip for calibrating the battery using the deletion of batterystats.bin method.
Once charged until CurrentWidget displays 0mAh unplug and turn phone off.

Boot into recovery using the vol down and power on delete the stats.

Reboot properly and then allow the phone to fully discharge. Its during the discharging process that the battery will calibrate and the settings stored under the new batterystats.bin that is generated.

I didn't actually know the initial discharge was as important as the pre charge, but that makes sense. thanks.

Thanks Stu. Currently allowing the battery to run down. Won't plug it in until it shuts down.

Quick Q for those in the know. I'd like to apply the Sense 3.0 all-in-one patch in post 8073 of this thread. Is it just: put file on SD card, backup current install, and flash from SD in Clockwork? Also like the look of the battery mod in post 8142.

Personally I've avoided anything to do with Sense 3.0 as this appears to be the cause of most of the issues. I'm going to wait another couple of weeks and keep my eye on the ROM thread and see what else crops up if things seem to have calmed a little and the addon appears stable with it I'll add it then.

To answer your question regards installing it, it is indeed a case of plonking it on your sd and installing via CWM and the install zip from sd option :D

Oh and Lee has released 3.1.3 ROM and 3.1.4 KERNEL for those who weren't up watching the thread last night like me.

Noticed that this morning, I'll install when I'm home from work later on tonight.

Do I recall you saying you had battery issues with the original radio, that's why you flashed his recommended one?

I don't know whether or not it's just a perception thing, but it certainly feels battery performance has taken a nose dive since installing. I've calibrated so will give it a couple of days to see if that makes a difference but I may just bite the bullet and go for the new radio.

Yes I did and it did improve my screen capture shows I got to 2 days with moderate use in another thread after changing. That said I got that using the non call recording kernel Lee had as an option back when 3.0.3 was released. Since then he has included call recording in his kernels by default.

My only recommendation to try improve matters if you have a call recorder installed to try and improve matters would be to deny it superuser access via the SU app and then open Titanium and freeze the app, see if that helps and if not uninstall it in its frozen state as another option.

The only other things I can think of contributing to the further decrease is the increase in speaker output chewing a bit more, & the CodeAurora video encoders/decoders. It may very well have been an issue for 3.1.2 as in the latest release he has decreased the amount of boost on the speaker and reverted to stock htc encoders/decoders.

For me though, I appreciate the inclusion of the recording feature and as long as I'm able to get 24 hours out of each charge I'm happy.

[EDIT]Oh and the fact CPU output was increased to 1036mHz in 3.1.2 as in previous builds it was sticking at 998mHz which would undoubtedly chew more battery per cycle. Might be worth tinkering in SetCPU and decreasing yours to 998 see if you get the battery lasting longer and just increase back again for heavy usage if you get any lag.[/EDIT]

Guys - just noticed that Lee is planning another release later, to address a few issues. Might be worth holding off on another flash until then. I'm gonna flash the new one and Sense 3.0 pack then and see how I get on. Looks like i'll have to do another round of battery calibration.

Week ago I was scared to root my phone!

Cheers, I'll leave it till later then. Imagine HTC were this efficient in getting issues with releases sorted? ;)

Indeed, I said I'd never do it. I also said I wouldn't be flashing a new radio either, but looks like I'll probably be going back on that soon too.....

Thanks Stu, I had a feeling he would release an update very soon as I was flashing 3.1.2 yesterday evening:D

It's called sods law mate ;)

I downloaded and flashed the new ROM this morning. I had an issue with the WiFi indicator in the notifcation bar just showing a small dot, although the WiFi did still work.

3.1.3 seems good so far, issues as yet

Good to know Pothers - thx. Hopefully the update later will be even better.

El P - plz let us know how you get on with radio flashing. Might risk it myself.
