Help Heavy Battery Drain - 2.3.3

I recently updated my Galaxy S (gt i9000) to android 2.3.3 Gingerbread through Kies. I have been noticing heavy battery drain on my phone now which never happened on Froyo. Even when the battery is fully charged and I leave my phone aside overnight ,the following day the battery is chewed upto 40-50%. Thus the battery doesnt even last for a day.

When I see battery usage (settings>about phone>battery use) ,I see "Android OS" at the top consuming about 70-80% (I've read that it usually is around 2-5%) . On Froyo the display used most of the battery. I read somewhere that a factory reset might fix but that means it'll wipe everything on my phone which I really cant afford. Is there any workaround to solve this problem?

I have recently changed my 1 year old original battery to another new original battery, my power problem went away over night.

The original battery had a charge every day since i had it from 19-June-2010, I think it was just needing replacing.

People should bear this in mind when troubleshooting battery, the cell has only a limited time of optimal charge retention even though it is Lithium Ion.

I installed Juice defender(free) but I dont see any improvement and I still see Android OS taking 70-80% usage. It's the same as not having it, so I'm not going to buy the plus or ultimate versions. I think Android OS using that much battery is definately not normal
I'll have to back up all my data before doing a factory reset and thats going to take a while(around 6gb) and I actually dont know how to go about it. I'll wait for some time to see if a fix comes around.

I doubt if the battery is a issue. My battery is just 5 months old and on Android 2.2 (Froyo), a charge was required only once in 2-3 days. It's been only after the Gingerbread (2.3.3) update that I have noticed such poor battery life. On Froyo if the phone was kept idle (overnight) it only used 1-2% battery. But on Gingerbread the battery drains so fast even when kept idle, its like me using WiFi,Bluetooth etc. all at the same time
Overnight, the battery drains from 100 to 50%.

Then i plugged it into the wall usb socket and let it charge until the indicator said 100% (without turning it on) then i turned it on, and that day the battery lasted a long time. From the information I've seen online there are two working theories

1) The battery information/calibration is wrong for the OS and some how factory resetting fixes that.
2) There's a flaw (apparently known as there is bug tracking someplace for it) in the Android system, and some internal system ramps up and starts processing or does some battery/processor intensive task sucking life out of your battery.

Still haven't factory reset my phone. But i'm watching the issue.

Thanks for the help. I think the problem no longer exists.
I followed the procedure you said in the previous reply. After that when I went to battery use, I still saw Android OS at the top with 74% usage. But the graph above dropped gradually and the usage percentage came down to 50%. But this drop was very slow. about 1% would drop every
2-5 mins. Now its at 50% and dropping very-very-very slowly and I do feel that the battery life has increased significantly and is increasing with every bit of drop of the Android OS battery usage.

Following your link to the thread I went to the running services and stopped SNS service. It was always in "restarting" mode and that maybe consuming battery.

Usually whener anyone notices a battery drain ,they also notice the system service "suspend process" (part of Android OS) taking a lot of cpu/battery/ram usage. In this case all one can do is reboot.
For this I installed "watchdog" to see the activity of suspend process ..if it happens again.

Last night my phone lost all its battery charge, apparently instantaneously (see SystemPanel plot1). On recharging the phone came back to normal (plot2) but this has been happening for the last few days (plot3).

What is going on? As there is no recorded CPU activity and it is unlikely that this constitutes real instantaneous battery drain I myself think that the battery is not calibrated. I would have thought that 3 charge drain cycles would have allowed calibration.
Should I do a factory reset (the third since upgrading to 2.3.3)?
Should I get a new battery?

I recently upgraded to GB and had large battery drain.

I did a factory reset, ran battery till phone switched offf and charged over night.

Current uptime is 3 days 1 hr and have 38% battery left.

Yes I do switch off things like 3G, wireless unless I'm using them.

Recently upped to 2.3.3 and didn't notice an increase in battery loss overall - in fact a little better that 2.2.1 but it does do some weird things like losing 10% almost instantly for wahtever reason.
Will get 2 days between charges on average..
Incidentelly A.OS usage is stated at about 7%.
Am going to try the 'run flat and recharge with unit turned off' method to see if it gets more consistent.

I have this issue too , on the Darky IRC channel , they told me that it's an issue with 2.3.3
it doesn't affect all phones though [for some reason]
and it got fixed in 2.3.4 .. it's an android issue not samsung's .. that's what they said

I too m facing the same issue with severe battery drain post upgrading to 2.3.3. one of the advises given to me was to do a factory reset. Now my phoe isnt rooted. I wanna know a simple way to backup all my apps n other imp stuff before i do the factory reset..please suggest

Well Kies can do contacts etc.

And Astro File manager can backup your apps. Just make sure you backup to the sd card.

I was suffering from this problem, once I updated my phone to 2.3.3. The day after the update my phone was dead (completely) before the end of work - Android OS was running at 50%+ all day.

In the end, I factory reset my phone and the Android OS is now at a normal level (5%). I only lost 3% of the battery life overnight and so far at work it has been back to normal battery usage (aside from the fact that I forgot to turn wi-fi off, oopsies).

I shall let you know how it goes over the next few days, but it looks like the factory reset may have solved the issue for me.

It did not take too long to put my apps back on my phone, as with the new market you can do it all from your computer (and there is a list of all the apps I had previously installed, so I did not have to search them out).

I backed up photos/whatapps/etc before wiping the phone.

Same issue here, battery drain caused by Android OS - battery usage for this process was running at 40%+

Switched off screen auto rotate and Android OS is back down to 3%

My phone has settled down a bit but does do some unpredictable things. The attached annotated screenshot of SystemPanel monitoring shows normal battery usage overnight Sunday and Tuesday but Monday night there is huge CPU activity which depletes the battery.
Running 2.3.3, 3-mobile UK, stock. For the whole period WiFi on, Background data on, one ActiveSyncing Exchange account and two IMAP accounts on 1hr check, autorotate on.

I'm also having problems with battery drain on SGS. It happens suddenly and the battery can be down in a couple of hours if I don't notice it. It can easily drain the full battery in one night and the phone will be off next morning.
The graph will just go almost straight down.

After a reboot or two it normally works for a while again and the battery will last for two days or more depending on usage.

This is really annoying because I can't depend on my phone having power anymore.

I havn't found a way to start the drain, so I have no idear when it happens.

Any idear when the 2.3.4 will be released officially?

I get the same problem with my SGS with battery drain. Lately, in the night I turn everything off, even put the phone in airplane mode so i can disable the cell use(3G) which eats quite a bit of power. I have no idea why this high load of usage from time to time. There are days where it works fine, and days where the battery slips thorough your fingers.

Dear all, I have the same problem with battery drain since I upgraded to 2.3.3. on my SGS. What I found so far: I have my Wifi turned on permanently. The moment the phone connets to a wifi the drain starts. So I guess the route cause of the problem should be found in that neighborhood. The moment I turn off wifi in that case the draining stops.
Interestingly what also helps is to simply turn off the phone, take out the battery for about a minute and turn it back on. Then also everything is back to normal.
Under normal condition (outside the state of drain ) the battery lasts much longer in my case!
So maybe the developers may start searching with that wifi hint.

I have the same problem and what I found so far is that my battery starts to heavily drain when there is a very low tone coming out the phone speaker, similar to that tone you get when you have your phone next to a mic but much lower

I don't know how to fix this problem but my temporary solution is whenever I feel the battery is draining fast I check if the tone is there and I switch to the flight mode then back again to normal and that should do the trick ..

Did you do a factory reset before or after you flashed 2.3.3?

If not, that could be part of the problem.

I am running 2.3.3 and have great battery life compared to when I was running 2.2.

I did the factory reset and restored my app settings with Titanium Backup after rooting.

I hate to say this but my Droid Charge which was happily running froyo was upgraded to gingerbread 2.3.6. I'm now getting about 30% of my previous battery life even after going back to factory settings twice, getting rid of some widgets and a couple of apps I didn't "really" need.
And...probably most telling, my Android OS usually around 60%!
Verizon has tried - with absolutely no success; they tell me it's a Samsung upgrade. Samsung says it's Verizon's upgrade although I can send them the phone (didn't say what I was to use meanwhile), and they'd see if they could find anything. But - they couldn't reset it to Froyo.
