Help Phone locking = Annoying

The phone as it comes from the box, locks automatically when the screen backlight goes out. This is a stupid feature because you can't turn it on or off. You can keep the backlight on forever and the phone won't lock if you set the Screen Backlight Timer to never turn off, but then your battery drains.

All I want to happen is the phone DOES NOT LOCK when the screen times out. The ONLY time I want it to lock is when I MANUALLY lock it using the end call button. The reason the default feature is stupid, if you are texting back and forth with someone, and they text you ever 30 seconds, you will have to unlock your phone every damn time to answer them, which is stupid. If the phone is just sitting on your desk you should be able to pick it up and answer right away. If it is in your pocket you should be smart enough to lock your phone you shouldn't need the G1 to lock for you every time the screen goes black.

I don't want my phone to lock automatically, ONLY when I manually unlock it. That program AutoLock on the market sucks for two reasons: 1) it requires that you draw a pattern (I don't want that, I just want it just the way it comes out of the box, only manually unlock), and 2) it doesn't work. I turn on the pattern, turn on AutoLock, and it works once and the system settings revert back to not requiring a pattern and therefore disabling the AutoLock.

I am sorry, but you post is very confusing and unclear what you are trying to do. How you currently have your settings and what additional locking software you may have added.

If you have two programs trying to be the BOSS of locking your phone .. you will surely end up have conflicts.

Please try to explain again in a clearer post so that we can try to help you.

1) The post really isn't that complicated. The phone as it comes from the box, locks automatically when the screen backlight goes out. This is a stupid feature because you can't turn it on or off. If it is in your pocket you should be smart enough to lock your phone you shouldn't need the G1 to lock for you every time the screen goes black.

2) The program Auto Lock is DESIGNED to work with the locking features of the phone as it comes standard. The program sucks though, so just forget I even mentioned it. I already uninstalled it.

The above explanation was much clearer to understand.

I have not seen anything that will defeat the screen timeout from requiring you to press the Menu Key ... and have not seen anything that will let you manually lock the phone without the screen timeout feature.

I have popup SMS that displays the person sending a message ,,, I dont have it set to display the message but believe that it will.

Answer the phone while it is locked is not a problem ..

I have my screen set to never time out and simply press the hangup to turn the screen off when I choose ... but my phone does lock when I do this ...

Let me know if you find away around this ...

You can do almost all you would like as long as you dont need a security lock(like the pattern one ) ... then never time out lets you decide when to conserve power and a press of the MENU bring the phone back to life instantly ...

Well - I for one sure had a hard time understanding the initial post. "I don't want my phone to lock automatically, ONLY when I manually unlock it.", the second was indeed easier to follow.

...but I also just work here :p. Don't own a G1. Perhaps it's expected to make more sense to someone familiar with it.

Anyway, hopefully jjj can help lead you to the answer you're looking for, or if you figure it out do let everyone know!

As always, thanks for helping out the new members, jjj!

UPDATE :

I decided to try the "AutoLock" -- It does require you to also use the G1's "pattern locking system" But allows you to set the delay time to whatever you want before the system's pattern lock takes effect.

In the meantime you press the hangup-key to turn the screen off.
And Press Menu twice to re-activate the G1 where you turned it off.

So far it seems to be working quite well ...

I will update again if I find out something noteable or any problems or caveats .

The problem is, it STILL autolocks the regular way IN ADDITION to the pattern. So when the screen times out it locks requiring you to press menu-menu to unlock, and THEN after the amount set by AutoLock it implements the pattern.

If you can't remember to put your phone on lock before you put it in your pocket, your moronic tendencies shouldn't affect everyone else (and by your I mean in a general sense not people in this thread).

I don't want to have to unlock my phone when the screen goes out in any way shape or form. I just want to manually lock/unlock my phone. thank you very much Google, but I don't need you to babysit me and my phone and lock it whenever the hell you feel it's necessary.

This is, in my opinion (someone who texts a lot) the most annoying thing about this phone and by far it's biggest draw back. I don't even want people to text me now because getting into a conversation via text requires me to unlock my ****ing phone every time.

I understand your point ... I am not holding my breath, but ask the dev for a manual lock option preferably as a desktop shortcut ...

Sorry about the current state ... but hopefully someone will in time develop a different locking system.

How do I do that? From the phone? Or a link to a website might help?

I would have thought you would have already offered the Developer of AutoLock ... To write the mod you are looking for !!

I am sure $50 would encourage the Dev of "AutoLock" to add that feature ...
you can send him an email from the AppMarket.

Like I said above, I don't know how to get a hold of them. You said send an email from the market but I went to what I thought was the official market and that app isn't listed there so neither is the developer.

Like you said before you had it installed and removed it ...

So you can go to "My DownLoads" and reinstall it ... And yes it is still in the market ... As I told you yesterday, I installed the program and am using/testing it.

Then from the Market App listing (even if you dont installed it) you can send the Dev an email..

if it is mostly because of texts, get sms popup. when you receive a text, your locked screen will display the text, and give you the option to delete, close, or reply, and you don't have to unlock, IIRC. Or...just open the keyboard, and it will unlock.

True ...

That is a good point that if you are not using pattern-locking ... you can bypass the double "menu key" press by just jogging the keyboard partially open and that will restore the screen from its sleep ... (at least that is the case if you are using aHome)
