Help First smartphone: unlimited data plan

Currently I am on AT&T and my 2-yr contract is expiring on the 22nd. I have been wanting to get an Android for some time now and since the options are kinda limited I've been set on getting an Infuse. My current phone is a Samsung impression and I am on a family plan, I am the only one who currently has an unlimited data plan with there phone (3 of 5 have smart phones.) Now I have been reading reports that AT&T is grandfathering in unlimited data plans for those who currently have it. Is this the case? If so will it remain at the current monthly fee or will it increase some? Another question, since it is on a family plan, could I try to grandfather other members of my family when they upgrade again or no?

The unlimited data plan for a non smartphone is not grandfathered into a smartphone unlimited data plan at $30 I believe. As far as I know, for the most part unless you have the $30 unlimited smartphone data you won't be able to get it now. You will likely have to go from your unlimited feature phone data to a tiered smartphone data package. And secondary lines on family plans do not get unlimited data unless they already had it too.

I have the $10 or $15 dollar unlimited plan, are you saying that I can't get into it or that the price would increase to $30 dollars?

I'm not sure about a $10 or $15 unlimited plan or how it relates to Family Plans.

I had the $30/mo. unlimited data plan that expired. When I inquired whether I could roll it over into my new Samsung Infuse data plan, the answer was "yes". When I acquired the phone and plan three days ago I called them afterward to check, and it indeed was the case.

If you're thinking of doing this, I would recommend your calling ATT customer service to verify this as I did, and also call them after the deal to make sure it went through correctly.

This is correct. If you were on a $10 or $15 unlimited data plan you will be forced to choose a $15 or $25 capped data plan for smartphones.

I bought my Infuse last week after having iphone 3 and 4 and was able to keep my unlimited data plan as well. If your grandfathered in then keep it and do not give it up, if not then the 2 gb data plan is the best way to go if you use your phone alot and are not on wifi.

He had a non-smartphone $15 unlimited data plan. That is different then the smartphone $30 unlimited data plan. He won't be able to keep unlimited data he has to go capped unless he gets lucky and finds the right customer service rep to help him out.

I've been with AT&T since before there was such a thing as a smartphone.

When AT&T first introduced the unlimited data plan it was for BlackBerry's only. Having one at the time, I immediately signed up for unlimited data since I use my phones quite heavily.

As the Treo and other phones became what we know today as Smartphones, AT&T offered unlimited plans for those as well. This was long before "feature phones" were equipped to connect to the internet. Once they were, AT&T came out with non-smartphone data plans at a lesser price.

So, for clarification, there are currently two internet data plans. One is for smartphones and one is for feature phones.

Therefore if you buy a smartphone such as an Android phone today, you must enroll in a data plan. There are just two plans that you will see on the AT&T website. Both are for a specific amount of data. Unlimited no longer exists for new users or those switching from a feature phone to a smartphone.

The term grandfathered, only applies to those who have had the unlimited smartphone plan before AT&T discontinued it. If you do have an old unlimited plan, as long as you keep it active it's still just $30. It does not matter if you change to another smartphone like when one upgrades, it's just a matter of being sure to call to their attention you have an old unlimited plan that you wish to keep.

I have an unlocked Motorola Milestone (from Telus) in which I'm using AT&T simcard that was meant for Samsung Impression, a non-smartphone with unlimited $15/mth data plan. If I place my simcard into a newer smartphone like AT&T Skyrocket lte, would I get 4g/lte speed while still paying $15/mth like I am with an unlocked smartphone? My only concern that even though it's unlocked, it's an AT&T phone that might make me change my data plan.

I bought an Infuse at Wal-Mart for 97 cents on March 19, 2012. I just finished a 2-year stint with an unlimited data plan with an AT&T iPhone. Wal-Mart assured me they couldn't grandfather an unlimited data plan, that choice was not in their computer system. I called AT&T cust serv who assured me I would be grandfathered. I had AT&T cust serve on the phone while I bought the Infuse. The Dept head at Wal-Mart claimed she didn't even have the AT&T cust serv number. She miraculously found in wtihin about 90 seconds. Long story short, AT&T rep verified who I was with my password, then told Wal-mart to check-box the 300 MB option for the purchase. The AT&T rep then put in a ticket to have my rate plan grandfathered. I called cust serv again after getting in my car to verify that a ticket had been put in. About a day later, I received a text from ATT that my unlimited data plan had been grandfathered. As I understand it, the billing will be exactly the same with same bill cycle date.
