Help post-sprint update sleeping problems

Can someone tell me what apps run up the Network Usage while the phone is supposed to be sleeping?

I posted in the Update thread that my Moment is at 100% running and 100% network usage which has drastically decreased my battery life. I was easily getting about 2 days from a full charge and now I can barely make it past 8 hours.

I did a hard reset when I noticed the problem so now I only have Spare parts and Advanced Task Manager installed. Wi-fi/GPS/BT are off. Background data is off. Gmail is NOT set to Auto-sync. E-mail is set to Never check. No widgets. No hung up downloads in the market. When I did the initial log-in to Sprint Navigation, I thought that had fixed the problem, but only for a few minutes. There is some app that is secretly eating my data - everything goes back to normal when in airplane mode, but then that keeps the phone completely useless to me :)

Any help is appreciated!

I'm having a similiar if not the same problem.. I was using Zefie's kernals before the update and had good battery life. Then I used the files Zefie had (cl14 working system and cl14 cdma) to update my phone rather than let the store screw up my phone, but the battery has gotten much worse. If the battery meter is correct, then something is eating it fast. I am showing the same usage pattern that I think you are describing (phone barely sleeping or not at all). I wasn't sure if ti was because I used the non-official update or if others had the same problem. Hope we can figure it out.

I too am having this issue. I had the phone charging all night, woke up and unplugged (8:30am). At noon I was down to maybe 75% or so. still green in the indicator but lower than 100%. Had my phone on all day at work. Turned off "use wireless network" in location and only had google update on. I work from 12 to 5 and left with only 15%. WTF?! I used my phone only once to make a call. That call was only a couple minutes long so where did all my power go???? This update is a little upsetting. the meter on the battery is probably fixed but now with location constantly running (as suggested in the sdx dev link) then what the hell do we do now?!

I am about ready to go swap my current Moment in for one that doesn't have the update. "use wireless networks" has always been disabled and I'm still getting horrible battery life... I'm talking fully charged at 2pm today and completely dead by 6pm.

I tried going to my local Sprint repair store and am very unhappy with my results. Nothing is fixed and I will warn you this will probably turn into a customer service rant.

I had called this specific store on Monday asking what time their repair center closed and was told 7pm M-F. I arrive at this store tonight right around 6pm and there was only one person working who was currently helping a family activate newly purchased phones. I was not greeted in the slightest bit..no hello. Not even a "I'll be with you in just a few moments." About 30-40 minutes later she finally takes a break from her current customers to see what I need and I tell her of my problems since the update..

SL = sales lady
MAG = my awesome girlfriend

SL: You're seeing 100% Network usage because the Moment requires data.
Me: Well of course but if every single thing that requires data usage is disabled and I also have Background Data disabled, it shouldn't be accessing data while I put the phone to sleep. It's killing my battery!
SL: Ohhhh. That phone is notorious for battery issues.
Me: I was getting 2 days from a full charge and now I'm only getting a few hours. The update that was supposed to fix all said battery issues should not have worsened the problem.
SL: Well that would require me to turn on our service/repair computer and the repair center closed at 6pm.
Me: I was told on Monday it closed at 7pm M-F.
SL: *shrugs* I don't know why they told you that but we changed our hours 2 weeks ago.
MAG: Don't you think it would have been more considerate of you to acknowledge us when we walked in?
SL: I didn't mean to ignore you.
MAG: It would've taken you 10 seconds to ask us what we needed in order to determine if you could help us or not and if you could, we would've gladly waited for you to finish with your other customer..but if not, we would not have wasted a half hour for nothing.
SL: *shrugs*

Any Virginians out there - never go to the Mechanicsville store.

I'll be trying a different store tomorrow. I'll update how it goes.

I got the update and am not seeing any problem with the battery life. My phone was off the charger at 7:30 this morning and it has been used off and on all day. By noon it was showing 80%. It is 8:00 this evening and it is still showing 50%. Before the update I'd usually be down to 15% by now with about the same amount of usage. This is with use wireless networks and GPS on all day.

What kind of signal strength do you have during this time? Do you leave auto-sync (under data synchronization) on as well?

I had the update installed on Sunday at the store and am now seeing an improvement in my battery life. I didn't notice at first, but I have definitely noticed after a few days. I was having to charge my phone constantly before, but making it through most of the day without a charge. I have everything I want turned on that I want except GPS.

when I upgraded to one of Zephie's kernels and CL 14. I think it ended up being an app that I had on.

Get an app called Spare Parts. This will show you what is running and killing your battery.

I reflashed mine and I get great battery life now.

I do have spare parts, which is what is showing me 100% running + 100% Network Usage for the Android System. I'm receiving far more data than sending but I can't quite pin point what it could be. All I have are the stock apps and I went through each one of them to make sure it wasn't automatically syncing/checking for updates.

Tin foil my friend, that's the answer. It'll boost the signal strength and stop the fed's from cracking into your phone and implanting chips in your head when you sleep at night.

Not really any REAL advice on staying connected to EVDO.... it's all where you're located. Like me, I get EVDO all day, except my second period class which is on the first story of my school building (SOLID brick and stuff). There I have 1x. Other than that, it's all location.

Oh and I've also just noticed that since the official update, I am constantly switching between EVDO and 1x. That could be the culprit so I've updated the PRL to see how that goes. Never had that problem before. Are there any other ways to ensure I stay connected through EVDO?

I went to Wireless Controls, Mobile Networks, System Select, and set it to Home only. Mine stays on EVDO now. I may not be able to download when outside of an EVDO area, but I have a toggle button now that quickly puts me to that setting so I can change it if needed. So far I haven't needed to. I think Ev changing to 1x and back was a battery killer for me.

So I ran a log while my phone was supposed to be "sleeping" and I found this:

01-22 16:23:32.215 D/CdmaServiceStateTracker(14934): [CdmaServiceStateTracker] Set CDMA Roaming Indicator to: 1. mCdmaRoaming = false, namMatch = false, mIsInPrl = true, mRoamingIndicator = 1, mDefaultRoamingIndicator= 0, dataAllowedtrue

01-22 16:23:32.220 D/CdmaServiceStateTracker(14934): [CdmaServiceStateTracker] Poll ServiceState done: oldSS=[0 home Sprint US 310120 EvDo rev. A CSS not supported 80 4982RoamInd: 1DefRoamInd: 0] newSS=[0 home Sprint US 310120 EvDo rev. A CSS not supported 80 4982RoamInd: 1DefRoamInd: 0]

01-22 16:23:32.235 D/CdmaNwLocationProvider( 1855): BaseStationLatitude: 37.541874, BaseStationLongitude: -77.451874

I'm not too familiar with this but if GPS/use wireless networks/anything dealing with GPS are all disabled, should it still be able to detect my location? The coordinates are spot on, but I feel like this location detection is what's causing my 100% Network usage.

Great idea! But how did you get the toggle button?

I was having terrible battery life after the update still and it turned out to be a battery issue. I ended up swapping batteries at the store.
Also i have noticed that if you run widgets that use network data usage, such as weather widgets or news widgets, that would have a negative effect on battery. They turn themselves on in the background, even if you have killed them with a task manager.

I'm using zefie's CL14 and kernel, and I've sorta had the same problem since the update.

SpareParts is showing 97% running with only 6% screen on time since the update, partial wake usage is almost entirely "android system."

My battery is still easily lasting me a whole day though, with background data, auto sync, wireless locations, and latitude all running. So, either whatever is running on my phone is not using a lot of power, or CL14 partially broke SpareParts

Well we know that the issue can certainly be different if your running the Custom Kernel compared to Sprint's update. For those posting you may want to post your exact version and what settings you are using. That may help in determining what the issue is. Also if you haven't already but are using the custom ROM set up by Zefie and others visit SDX Developers to get more info and help provide feedback so they can correct any bugs your finding.

The battery life issues, especially for those with Ze* kernel, have been reported in a few different threads at SDX. It seems latitude and use wireless networks has been the problem for some people including myself. It sometimes causes an infinite loops to occur which slowly drain the battery and shows up in SpareParts as Android System. Easiest solution is to disable Use Wireless Networks (when not needed, stationary) or go into google maps->latitude->menu->privacy->log out to completely disable latitude and the two background processes it runs.
