Root [FAQ]ROOTING (Updated 7th April 2012)

Can i also ask, is a ROM simply something that edits the standard android system? by "flashing" a ROM you place the new files over the old ones editing how it runs?

The android system or OS sits on the /system partition of the memory. This is the ROM (read only memory).

When you download and flash a ROM, you overwrite the entire /system partition so the previous Android OS is gone completely and the new ROM (Android OS) replaces it.

Edit> Flashing is a real term. It doesn't need to be in quotation marks :)

@SUroot,

Below are a few suggests for the rooting FAQ, that you may consider adding. Thanks. :)

* The link to shipped ROMs is no longer valid. Please update it to this: Shipped ROMs

* In the RUU section, please add a sentence on how to pick up the correct RUU (perhaps with an example).

* In the 2nd paragraph, please state the reasons for rooting. I made a short list here: http://androidforums.com/android-lounge/338509-anyone-not-root-their-device-yet.html#post2717345

* In the section "Whats the best Custom ROM to flash?" give a short overview of which type of ROMs are available for Desire (Sense, ASOP, MIUI) and post a link to XDA overview: Desire Index - Everything Desire is here! [UPDATED: 26/5] - xda-developers

* Add a section "ROM Manager" and under it the text "Avoid it at all cost!".

Added but edited. It was a bit too personal

I've added a new section. As for the link, its in a section already, I dont want to keep repeating the same links.

Rom manager added too.

Updated gold card section:

Please note by many it was believed the goldcard must be made on your working phone and would only work on that phone. We now know this to be inaccurate. The goldcard tool uses the CID from the SD card (not phone) so the goldcard should be universal across android devices. The Image the goldcard creates however, can only be used on the card it was created for

*Thanks wyvilledog for pointing that out.

Rooting for Dummies by Matlock. I rooted my Desire with Unrevoked, got the superuser app, but could not run in rooted apps, all required busybox.

Yes rooted stock roms dont have busy box. You would have had to either download and use adb to push the busy box file (see adb and fastboot FAQ available in the root forum sticky) or flashed a custom rom.

In regards to your current problem, can you get to recovery?

From off, hold vol down and press power.

At Hboot screen, use Volume to navigate to recovery and press power to select.

What happens? Please describe exactly what you see

All, I have a HTC Desire with Orange UK and rooted it a month back. My phone reboots often and I have noticed this happens mostly when I try to make call. Also my frnds have mentioned that they are unable to reach me.

I'm wondering if this is to do something with my Radio. Any helpful response is appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Post edited / Please don't quote huge posts. It makes the topic unreadable.
Thanks, Usta.

Sooo, i rooted my desire using unrevoked3 metod. Everything worked fine, until it rebooted into recovery, after clockworkmod was installed. It gives me an error saying: Can't mound cache!!! and other stuff. All i try to do on that recovery, like flashing smth or even a factory reset fails with an error.
Now, i can deal with the recovery problem, but i have a bigger problem. When i try to use root access that's having to do with any system app, the phone reboots. For example, i tried to move adobe flash player to sd, and the phone rebooted.
My phone spects:
Hboot 0.93
Strock rom Android 2.2
S-on

Does it have something to do with the s-on? Is the phone trying to protect itself?

Possibly a hardware issue. You could use your goldcard to take it to unrooted stock 2.29.405.5 and see if the issue persists. Unfortunately with orange, there is no way to take back to orange stock.

Did you use my guide linked in this thread? If so, did you follow it to the letter and check the erase size? You would see this if you have erase size of 40,000
