Help is the SGS2 actually waterproof??

saw this add where a girl dunks the phone into a fish bowl, and it still works. Anyone know for sure?

No it is not water proof. Watch the advert again and look at the top right of the screen and there is a disclaimer saying not to put your phone in water.

Very stoopid! If you wanna show lifelike display, do what those old HDTV commercials did. Put a picnic table full of food on the screen and have ants crawl on it!

It's just a commercial lol. Not that serious. Jut getting the point across that the display looks alive. Notice it's a little girl putting it in water and not an adult that would know better.

I mean the iPhone makes it seem like magic when they pull their commercials and adverts off but of course we dont believen magic. You have to exaggerate to capture attention sometimes.

lol cool. I didn't pay much attention to the ad. It was just an after thought. I'd still like to know if the phone could survive bein dropped in the pool. Motorola have a waterproof phone don't they?

Yeah, the Motorola Defy, or close enough. There are waterproof phones out there, so this advert could be misleading for someone who didn't pay attention to the words. I haven't seen an iPhone ad where they plunge it underwater. It's usually something really simple and a white backdrop.

I reckon it's pretty dicey, like chocobosandwich said, there other ways they can show it has a lifelike screen.
I used to work for an insurance company and they couldn't put anything in their ads that weren't covered by the insurance policy. I don't know why this would be different.

My girlfriend and my sister in-law (different people) like to "test" all their phones by dropping them in the toilet (water test) then putting them on the boiler to dry (heat test).

Just as an FYI, the Nokia 6300, E71 and Blackberry Bold 9700 both passed. The iPhone 3 failed.

I'm not going to try with my SGS2....

I spilled a glass of Glenfidich on it and i removed it quickly. I dried it and there was a bit under the battery, I left it to dry and now it is 100 operational (but that was lucky)

In a few words do not get ur GS2 near water.

Well... I tested this, and only by accident. I dropped my SGS2 in a pail of water yesterday... after 1/2 second of shock I pulled it out and frantically raced to remove the back cover so i could take out the battery, all the while the screen is going crazy and the phone is making weird sounds from the speaker. I got the battery out but I was horrified, about what I had done. I went to my car and turned on the engine, and set the dash heater and fan to full then placed the disassembled phone over top of the vent. I had to have a cigarette to calm my heart that was beating a mile a minute. After the smoke, I carefully reassembled the phone and turned it on. After a second I saw the boot screen, oh thank god! But then, I noticed no boot-up sounds and then the home screen never appeared; my heart sank, what had I done? I looked closer and saw that the front camera was still completely fogged over with moisture. So I disassembled the phone once more, taking out the battery and all the cards and again put it upon the dashboard heater vent. I left it there for about while I went back to work inside. I tried to work, but all I could think about was my $600 dollar ruined phone. After 45 minutes I went back to my car to check on the phone; I picked it up and it was so hot it almost burned me! Oh no, have I made things worse now I thought to myself. I let the phone cool off for about another 15 minutes. Finally I put the cards back in and then the battery... I was scared to turn the power on, as if waiting would make a difference, I powered on, and got the boot screen, then I heard sound, beautiful music to my ears, and finally the home screen! Oh what joy I felt; I quickly tested all the functions of the phone, speaker, microphone, sdcard, wi-fi, cell reception, usb connector. Everything checked out fine.

So to answer the question, the SGS2 passed the water test and the heat test, well at least in my case lolz... I wouldn't recommend it though, and I'm sure Samsung wouldn't either, but boy am I relieved my favorite toy survived...

electronics + water = bad. end of story.
it might be fine now, come back in a few months and let us know how you are doing, other than that, grats on a working phone!

a few days back, i was stupid enough to let my SGS2 drench. Had it in my jacket pocket, but the rain was too good for my jacket. My heart popped out of my mouth when i saw the phone. It was water everywhere - on the screen, around the sim, battery, in the mini-usp port. Just everywhere. It wasn't connecting to the network. Plus, the lock button was not working properly (probably because of water entering that part of the board.)

I removed the battery and sim and wiped the water out with tissues. Let it dry for a night. Checked again in the morning to see if there is any trace of moisture left and wiped it with tissue and a Iron heated towel. Assembled my phone and saw that it was wroking pretty neat.

Few glitches i observe though,

1) The battery indicator on the Top Right is not consistent with the actually amount of charge left in the battery.

2) There is a lag in the touch sensation of the screen. Need to observe keenly. Plus the swipes that worked previously on Temple run dont seem to work anymore.

And some heating problem that i observe.

Other than that, its good to have my phone back working. Have no idea how it will fare in the long run. Thinking to switch to One X.
