I would love to leave metro and not have to buy a new phone to goto another carrier but I can't use this phone cause it has no SIM CARD unless I am blind , would it be possible for another carrier to just program the new information?

I am also rooted, what options do I have to keep my phone and have new carrier or trade in/sell my phone what would my outlets be

Metro does not use SIM cards on any phones. From what I understand, the phone is capable of being on other networks with the same technology. The problem is that those carriers do not allow phones from outside, so there is no network for you to switch to. As for selling it, I would say Craigslist is the best bet.

+1 cdma phones carriers are metro, verizon, virgin, boost, sprint, and cricket You could put this phone on cricket I think, but the rest have no way to enter the esn into their system.
thats not to say it can't be done, its just that it would be cloning one of their phones and that is illegal.

As others have noted it's because this is a CDMA phone, not GSM. Verizon is CDMA, AT&T is GSM. Half the phones in the USA are CDMA so half the phones in the USA do not have sim cards.

Smalller CDMA carriers like Cricket will accept other carrier's phones because they want to grow. This is why Cricket said they would accept Verizon's CDMA iPhone. (Yeah, Verizon's iPhone 4 does NOT have a sim card.) Of course Cricket can't take AT&T's GSM iPhone because CDMA and GSM are incompatible.

But larger CDMA carriers like Sprint (who also owns CDAM Virgin Mobile) won't take any CDMA phones that don't have their brand on them. Sprint will only run Sprint phones on their CDMA network. Same with Verizon. They figure you want to go with them, your phone has to advertise for them! :p You can buy a Verizon or Sprint phone off eBay or something, doesn't have to be brand new...

Virgin Mobile is actually a good deal. They are Sprint's version of Metro, their budget brand. They have the Optimus V like we have the Optimus M.

Yes, you can switch to Cricket with your current phone. Cricket will "flash" your phone onto it's network. I only found this out literally 15 minutes ago, had i known that, I would have had them flash my Samsung Fascinate instead of trading it in for the $100 off for a new Cricket Phone!! Oh well, too late lol. So yes! i have the LG Optimus C which is the EXACT same phone as the Optimus M. I love my Cricket service coverage, great download and 3G speeds and it's $60 a month for unlimited everything no contract!! So I say switch to Cricket, have them flash your phone so you don't have to buy a new one :)

Its not exactly a SIM card. Yes its a sim card but not the normal SIM card you see in other phones. Phones that use SIM cards are GSM phones. Which Metro is CDMA which doesnt need a SIM card. The only reason the Esteem has a SIM card is because its a 4g LTE phone. All 4g LTE phones have "sim cards" because the 4g LTE network is very similar to the GSM network so its required to have it.

Sorry you are WRONG. Those aren't sim cards. You can't swap them. Your homework assignment is to google and find out what those little LTE cards are. :p

Verizon is using them too -- and they are NOT sim cards.

Arghh. Doesn't anyone keep up with the industry?

It's NOT a sim card! And LTE is NOT similar to GSM at all.

Um Actually it is a sim card and is considered a sim card.Do your research before posting ;) The sim card contains the 4G subscriber profile which contains the IMSI for billing, also contains details about the subscribed services and features, and also the security authentication and ciphering information. So yes it is a sim card which what does the sim on a gsm network do?

Yes its a UICC card but its still "considered" a SIM card. Its actually the "new generation" SIM card. Even Metro considers it a sim card. Its even referred to as a sim card on the punch out itself. Basically the only main difference between an UICC and a GSM sim card is you cant swap it from phone to phone.

WHAT IS A UICC AND HOW IS IT DIFFERENT FROM A SIM CARD?
tag / 3G - SIM - GSM - UICC - cell phone - 4G
UICC stands for Universal Integrated Circuit Card. It is a new generation SIM (Subscriber Identification Module) included in cell phones or laptops used in some high speed wireless 3G networks. The UICC identifies you to your wireless operator so they know your plan and services. It can store your contacts and enables a secure and reliable voice and multi-media data connection, global roaming and remotely adds new applications and services. The UICC is the best and only universal application delivery platform that works with any 3G or 4G device. For example, subscribers are able to easily transfer their phonebook and preferences from one handset to another.

Technically, the UICC works in all mobile telecom networks. It is a type of smart card technology. Smaller in size than a full card, it contains a computer, or microprocessor, its own data storage and software. It is an evolution of the SIM used to identify subscribers in GSM networks. GSM, or Global System for Mobile Communications, is the most popular standard for wireless technology in the world with 3 billion users (41 percent of the population).

Like the SIM, the UICC has an application that stores your contacts and another that can help you optimize your call costs when roaming globally by maintaining a list of preferred networks in the UICC.

A big advantage of the UICC over the SIM, however, is it can have multiple applications on it. One of these, the USIM application, is what identifies you and your phone plan to your wireless service provider using one of these standards: Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS), High Speed Packet Access (HSPA) or Long Term Evolution (LTE). Another application, the CDMA SIM (CSIM), enables access to CDMA networks, which are different from GSM or UMTS networks. Other possible applications include ISIM, to secure mobile access to multimedia services, and non-telecom applications such as payment. For example, many subscribers have a UICC with USIM and ISIM applications for phone service and multimedia respectively.

Another advancement is that the UICC can communicate using Internet Protocol (IP), the same standard used in the Internet and the new generation of wireless networks. It also can support multiple PIN codes, which can better protect your digital life by preventing anyone from misusing personal information.

Right here.

"UICC stands for Universal Integrated Circuit Card. It is a new generation SIM" (Credit http://www.justaskgemalto.com/en/communicating/tips/what-uicc-and-how-it-different-sim-card)

Put it in simple terms for you, take for instants an mp3 player and an Ipod, or an LCD and LED tv, a gasoline truck and a Hybrid truck, an Analog tv and a flat panel tv. Each of the second ones are the "new generation" or " more advanced" versions of the first one. But guess what? An Ipod is still an MP3 player, the LED is still a tv, the Hybrid truck is still a truck, and the flat panel tv is still a well a tv. Yes the technology has advanced and some more things may have been added but guess what? its still a SIM card/ smartcard.

Can you not see the picture? If you can that is the punch out card from the card. And also all the Corp store employees including the manager calls it a SIM card. Which I believe they are giving the run down by corporate correct?

If you cant see it, it says and I quote (Source the punch out card from MetroPCS)

"Your phone has been paired with this SIM card. Do not remove the SIM card from your phone. Removal will interrupt your MetroPCS service. Please see a MetroPCS store for details"

Its a sim card dude. Its like a smart phone. Has lot more features then a flip phone and can do a lot more but what are both of them?......... Cellular phones.

LTE FAQ
Q:When I remove the battery, there's a card that looks like a SIM card in the phone. What is this?

A: It's not a SIM card – so, please, don't take it out. It's called a UICC or Universal Integrated Circuit Card. The UICC is a smart card that lets MetroPCS know that your phone belongs on the network – it authenticates the phone to the network. However, the UICC card does not contain any user information, and once the UICC card is inserted in the Craft, it can only be used in that phone – not in any other device.

Since people on GSM networks are familiar with sim cards, some people (even in the industry) are also calling these sim cards, but they really aren't.

A sim card is something completely different -- can be swapped to different phones, has your account information, etc. This is for a different purpose. It may look like a sim card, but it's not.

Theres a bunch of mixed reviews on the portability from phone to phone. Evidently Metro's cant be switched from phone to phone but say for instance Verizon's can. Which Verizon is also a CDMA carrier and also calls it a sim.

8. Can I use my Verizon Wireless 4G SIM in more than one device?

Yes; the Verizon Wireless 4G SIM card contains all of your subscriber information, so the SIM card is portable and can be used in any Verizon Wireless-certified 4G device. All usage will be billed to the account associated with the 4G SIM card.

Interesting.

still the Optimus M nor any CDMA-only phones (Samsung Admire, HTC Wildfire) will have these cards. They are for LTE purposes only.

by the way, the Metro techs call them UICC cards.

The original batch of Esteems shipped without them already installed, which caused MetroPCS store employees to have to install them in-house before the customer could walk out with them. Over on another forum there was lots of chatter abou the "IUICC cards".
