For the past two days now Ive had this happen three times. Nexus is sleeping and go to wake it up with the lock button and nothing. Will not react to anything. What I have to do is pull the battery. Not sure what's going on right now and I'm wondering if one of the apps is causing it. Going to do some tests this weekend and see if I can't figure it out.

I'd start by removing any widgets you have on your home screen. If that fixes the issue, start adding them back one by one to pinpoint exactly which widget is causing the lock up. If that doesn't work, then I'd start uninstalling any apps that have background access (i.e. a 3rd party weather app, RSS reader, etc.). My phone was crashing when I hit the home button and it turned out to be a weather widget. Removed the widget and no more crashes.

Least favorite solution would be to start clean and do a reset :-(

Yep, that is going to be my course of action. Problem with this, is that it doesn't happen every time, yesterday it was fine all day until around 11pm. The day before it was first thing in the morning and around 2pm. So, its going to be a long weekend and i see this "testing" actually going into the beginning of next week. What weather app are/were you using BTW?

I'm pretty sure that the widget for a program called World Weather was causing the locking and second to that, the widget for CalWidget appears to dramatically slow down my home screen refresh (i.e. you're in an app and hit home). One I got rid of World Weather, the crashing stopped and then I removed CalWidget and the home screen loads as normal.

It took me a good couple hours to test various widget & app combos before finding the culprits and to be honest, if I had to do it again, I would probably just to a hard reset and install apps one by one over the course of a day or two...
