Root Some General G Tab Rooting Questions

I have been learning all about rooting my new GTab and you all have been super helpful - thanks!

I have a few questions to help me understand a little bit better what I am doing, etc.:

1. From some instructions I followed, I have installed CWM and seem to understand it pretty well. Does this basically get "hard saved" onto the device and replace the standard recovery? Seems like even when I wipe the unit, CWM is still there when I enter recovery mode.

2. I followed some other instructions to install Brilliant Corners, and it had me put the update.zip onto the root and upon entering recovery, it installed it. Can I always just save any Rom's zip file into let's say the Android folder, and use CWM to find and install it, or do certain Rom's need to be installed straight from the root like BC did?

3. Can CWM save a backup of any Rom I have currently installed?

4. If I backup a current installed Rom with CWM, does it overwrite the previously saved backup? Or, can I have multiple backups on my unit and just switc back and forth?

5. I wiped my GTab when installing Briallian Corners, and now my backup of the stock 4349 Rom is gone. Can I just download the one from the following link and save it to my Android folder, and install it using CWM just like I would any other Rom?
[RECOVERY] GTab recovery firmware (official Viewsonic 1.2-based versions) - [G-TABLET] - SlateDroid.com

6. Finally, BC seemed to be the most stable for me, but then all of a sudden it has started force closing all apps upon start up and cannot be used. What is the most basic/stable way for me to go?

Thanks!

Yes, this will now be your permanent recovery method.

you can save any .zip file with any name to any folder and access it with clockwork. (install zip from sdcard -> choose zip from sdcard -> select the folder containing the file you want)

3. Can CWM save a backup of any Rom I have currently installed?

yes. (backup and restore -> backup)

4. If I backup a current installed Rom with CWM, does it overwrite the previously saved backup? Or, can I have multiple backups on my unit and just switc back and forth?

you can save as many backups as you want, but they are pretty big files so you will probably want to delete some eventually. i always keep 3 on mine (stock, most stable, current). Using ROM manager from the market will allow you to name/rename/delete your backups

yep, that will work fine. also, you can save it to any folder you would like. grabbing it from that link with your tablet will put it in the "download" folder, which you can access through CWM. this saves you the time of having to connect to your computer and move the file.

6. Finally, BC seemed to be the most stable for me, but then all of a sudden it has started force closing all apps upon start up and cannot be used. What is the most basic/stable way for me to go?

while i cannot comment on the stability of any 1.2 based ROM's as i am on 1.1, there are a couple of ways to address force close issues.

solution 1: have you partitioned your internal memory yet? it only needs to be done once. i personally have not had issues running without ever repartitioning, but many people say that it is a must. to do it, Select the "advanced" option in CWM, then go to “partition SD card”. for the first option select 2048, and for the second option select 0. This erases data on your tablet. Be prepared.

solution 2: run a "fix permissions" command. this should be done after every new ROM install, as i have found it will stop many FC issues. this can be done with ROM manager or in clockwork (advanced -> fix permissions-> reboot system)

you're welcome. :p
