Apple vs Android: Planet of the apps

In December 2009 I did an article when my blog was in its first week which covered Androids recent boom in the number of manufacturers who have taken a somewhat explosive decision to invest in Android.

I also talked about how the Apple market is the only thing going for the iPhone - and stressed that along with a wide majority of mobile phone manufacturers adopting Android the other thing that needs to happen is the amount of Android apps available needs to increase - both quantity wise and quality wise.

We are in 2010 now, and I am now with this forum. I was just wondering, who here thinks that the iPhone app store is the only good thing about the iPhone?

I think its funny that it takes an arm(Android) of one company (Google) to compare to what Apple did. That just shows that Google as a whole is something greater then Apple will ever be.

Hm, I dont think that the app market is the only good thing about the iPhone. Apple makes high quality, original and creative products. And it doesnt matter how long you keep hating on them, its still true.

I have yet to purchase a smartphone, but I am closely following the both Android and Iphone. Currently my carrier is Verizon Wireless.

Honestly, the Iphone is pretty cool, but their app market is really the only true advantage I see them having over the Android. However, I think that gap is closely pretty fast.

The App store is the biggest thing for Apple. The demand is for apps. That is the #1 selling point. I think #2 would be video/music play ability. Android has good video with their 800x480 resolution, but Audio is owned by Apple.

Google should be afraid of what Apple is to bring forth with their 4th gen iPhone. If that thing has an 800 x 480 resolution, then it's game over for the Android OS.

Opinions well taken and respected.

But I disagree. There will always be demand for an OS such as Android, just because Apple tends to blow everything away with next gen products does not mean the end. You have to remember that everybody thought it was game over for Motorola, and when they adopted Android suddenly they were back.

Android is the saviour of companies - it's demise will not come soon < especially at the hands of the 4th gen iPhone.

Having a 800 x 480 resolution display will only push the up the already huge requirements from manufacturers. They will just adapt to the change in consumer behaviour, having that kind of resolution will never be an Android killer, in fact, if all Android powered devices had it then it will probably make Android a nicer experience.

Despite my hastiness to jump into predictions, touch screens will most probably incorporate haptic feedback and proximity sensors in the next gen phones - as to boost interactivity.

Lets get one thing straight... apple hasnt innovated or invented ANYTHING, they just copy other peoples ideas....

They brought the touch screen market into mass consumers hands? They set the standard, improved that standard twice and created an App store which also sets standards.

Proprietary? Free Dictionary Org says that that means "An unincorporated business owned by a single person who is responsible for its liabilities and entitled to its profits". Oh i get it..You;re just upset that Steve Jobs is a good smart business man and just a good inventor?

High markup..Yes, i agree. But so is Nokia. And Why? Because when you buy their products it will last you a long time. The quality of labor. Parts. Customer Service. Thats what you pay for.

Iphone was cool not going to lie. Just can't stand by a company that leans to the "Right" if you know what I mean.

The iPhone's simplicity is a good thing too. It's got multi-touch and it's fast and easy to use.

The app store may be the best thing about the iPhone, but it's not the only good thing. People often say that they'd rather have functionality over aesthetic.

I say I'd rather have both. The iPhone's app transitions are smooth and nice to look at. The phone itself is very handsome, and that's not a bad thing.

What the iPhone *did* do was package existing technologies in a new and (I'll admit) exciting way. The excellent marketing manged to convince people to ignore it's obvious weaknesses but then the target market for the iPhone was not your typical PDA user who saw through it immediately. It *was* a real game changer and forced the other players to up thier own game.

Apple II - that *was* innovation and so was the Apple_Newton. The Apple Newton still has quite a following...and deservedly so.

Just remember....Most of the new Android phones and even the whole OS itself was GREATLY influenced by the iphone. 3 years ago, there were zero phones that looked and felt like it, let alone a whole OS created similar to it. I really like Android and will choose it over the iphone, but Apple completely revolutionized the entire "smartphone" market with the iphone, just as they did MP3s with the ipod.

• I bet you're not the only one who doesnt agree with how he plays his game. I do not agree with some things either. But that does not take away from his skill (or whichever you like to call it)
• SJ has not invented anything new..but wouldnt using something old in a new way be considered an invention? I dont recall anything even close to an iPhone before it came out...Bicycles have been around forever. 2, 4, 5,6 wheel bikes, track bikes, road, mountain, you name it, still are inventions.

The reason why I am on this forum is because there is plenty of good info about Eris and Android OS. There are nice people here that can help with an issue. I am not here to defend Apple though. I would like to own a MacBook Pro (which I am saving for). I do own a 160 gig iPod classic and enjoy it daily.
However I think its shallow and simply silly to be arrogant and discredit something or someone because of personal reasons. Gates is guilty in some ways too..but boy, dont try to tell me that he did not change the way we see technology.

I'm still failing to see where they "innovated" anything. They improved on an already existing product. Thats not innovation. And the only standard i see is enabling a bunch of people who cant learn how to use a device easier for them. Although in doing so missed many, among many many features existing devices already possessed. So something that really doesn't have many features should be easy to use.

I think the biggest point in favour of the iPhone is the Apple brand. Google will never look as cool or accessible or desirable as Apple.

Plus they do a good job of streamlining the user experience and making things "just work". I've spent days poking around with my Android phone getting things just-so. Yeah sure I at least had the opportunity which I suppose I wouldn't have had (so much) with the iPhone, but Apple are selling their experience, not the opportunity to make your own, and people love them for it.

The app store is really cool, but the iPhone's biggest plus point is the Apple experience. IMHO.

Bingo, you hit the nail on the head. A lot of Apples appeal today is from it's branding. Sony is similar in the electronic field. You usually pay more for Sony products vs competitors for basically similar products. Apple has done a masterful job of marketing the iPods at first then the iPhone to be THE thing to own. Own one and you are instantly cool. Just think of how many movies/TV shows emulate the Mac by having a computer with some other glowing object on the back of the screen. You don't see anyone trying to copy the HP symbol do you? I've tried to get my wife away from her iPhone, but it is too easy to use for her. She not the most tech savvy of people to put it kindly, and as have been said before, the iPhone is right up her ally. For me I quickly outgrew the UI and almost from the get go was looking for some way to make it better. In any case Apple has what every other manufacture wants to get, The Cool Factor. Have a iPhone and everyone knows it, Have a HTC Hero and most will not know what it is. It is form over function. While the iPhone can function, it falls way behind to other OS in many essential functions of a smart phone. Even the much dogged BlackBerry OS is light years ahead of the iPhone on the e-mail and notification front.

Sounds like Apple made a faux-smartphone for faux-smart people.

Seriously though, they simplified the interface and use of the device, and provided a single source for applications, broadening its appeal compared to traditional smartphones.

Apple has a talent for taking ideas and making them fly. Xerox invented the mouse and desktop metaphor for computers, but Apple took it mainstream and changed the way people relate to their computers.

Take it from a former printer: Apple's Macintosh and LaserWrinter revolutionized the printing industry. Before we bought our first Mac and LaserWriter Plus we spent hundreds or even thousands of dollars each month on typesetting. That expense went to near zero afterwards, and the type houses all went out of business.

Apple developed Hypercard at a time when most people couldn't even wrap their minds around what a relational database even was. We take hyperlinks for granted now, but there was a time they didn't exist.

Sony invented the portable music player, but "iPod" replaced "Walkman" as the shorthand term for that kind of device long ago.

Lots of people rail against iTunes, but it has revolutionized the way music, movies and other products are distributed.

Not too long ago Apple entered the smartphone market and stood it on its ear. It has only been fairly recently that the rest of the industry has been able to respond with comparable products, including my Motorola Droid.

And now Apple has introduced the iPad, which has been greeted with a lot of snickering and derision. But I have no doubt that it will take off and sell millions -- Apple doesn't make many mistakes!

Apple managed to survive some very bad years and come back stronger than ever. They used to be marginalized as kind of a cult computer, but not anymore. They're big, they're mainstream, they employ lots of very smart and talented people, and they're led by an uncompromising (though not necessarily entirely likable) individual. They've had an enormous influence on industrial design and product development, even outside the world of computers and electronic devices.

Maybe I'm overreacting to a one-line putdown, but a lot of people on these forums (and elsewhere) seem to think that Apple is The Enemy. Apple is not The Enemy. Apple, Google, Oracle, Sun, Microsoft and a host of other companies are all developing technologies and building on each other's ideas to propel us into a mind-boggling future. They cooperate, they compete, they swallow each other up (e.g. Oracle and Sun), and they move us forward. And they all deserve credit where credit is due.
