Well, I live in Switzerland, but they don't officially have the G1 yet. I think it's imported from Germany, but I'm not sure.
Carrier is Swisscom.
All I've done is install some stuff from the android market I have not rooted it or anything like that.
Everyone else can see skype in the market?

You might try this to clear the problem ....

I assume you are not trying to download "Paid Apps" ... these did not work at one time ... not sure if that is still the case ...
I also assume that you have a data plan?

(in another post a user confirms: There was a release to the app market that removed the ability to buy paid apps. This only affects the unlocked phones, an DEV1 is an unlocked phone.)

1.) Turn phone off ... remove battery for at least two minutes.
2.) Hold menu key ... until all actions finish from Powering on phone ...
....... At the bottom left corner of the display in transparent text will be the words "Safe Mode"
3.) Power off phone again ... battery out ... wait two minutes
4.) do a normal power on ...

Now check your Market App /// ... download a free app..

Yeah, I have a data plan. Otherwise I'd be broke by now ;)
All the other apps (connectbot, mytracks, skymap, terminal emulator, ...) work fine. The problem is that I effectively can't see a skype in the market.

What does that switching off/on/off/on do? because I've already customised my G1 nicely and wouldn't want all that work lost if I can help it.

I'd rather download the skype from some other place and install that. I couldn't however i couldn't find such a thing on the skype homepage.

The procedure is much like what you do on a PC ... when a program is not working properly ... Power Off .. Safe Boot ... clears OS hangs and bad loads ... This will not change your setting or layout ....

You are talking like you will never turn your phone off .... Because you think if you do ... you will loose your settings ... Not the case /// do different than rebooting a PC ...

Your Choice ...

Thanks for your suggestion. I tried it and it didn't help. I'm beginning to think that either my carrier or someone else has blocked it. a search on the android market for SIP and iskoot came up empty too. Would it be possible for a carrier to block this?

If you are not seeing any (NO Apps) at all ... then the region you are in is being Blocked ... or is not enabled Yet ...???

Apps Can be set to sell in specific regions as well ... so this could be a case where the developer has retricted the app to limited regions ...

I guess that's the case then. All the other apps work fine, so I can't think of anything else.

What I ended up doing was downloading the skype.apk from somewhere else and installing that. it now works fine.

I do not always complain but Praise is not going to get a developer to fix or make a program. Its simple... We should have SIMPLE programs like SPEED DIAL when the phone came out. I just made a really positive post about ASTRO File Manager. And if I am connected to Skype through WiFi, well damn it, it should work!

Routers are tricky devices ... just like modems -- but even more so !!!

I have problems with consistent and timely email pushes through wifi -- it can NOT be trusted .. even with Wifi/Phone Keep-Awake apps ...

so.... dont know why anyone thinks that something should or "HAS TO" work ... until they have ruled out all possible software and hardware issues ... different routers work differently -- their bios codes are different even from model to model from the same maker !!! so it maybe should work ???? but if it doesn't then time to try something different ... I have found the techies in Hong-Kong and Macao to be very clever in making things work ... maybe you should take a trip for some hands on help ... unless you haven't exhausted the talent in Thailand !!

I believe a UK poster says his works from the US. I am on WiFi conected to Skype from Vietnam. It should work. I sent them a letter and they said maybe soon. I think it is not a Tech problem... Even payment from here is very difficult. They will not take my US Credit card either. I am from the USA... So I sit and wait for Google Voice....

My Magic Jack works fine from here (Vietnam) but I have to go to an Internet Cafe to use it. My $65 usd a month hotel does not have telephone lines in the rooms. How much is one night at a US Hotel? Well I guess for that price they would have a line............ I left the USA in 85.... I miss the fishing. That's about all I miss. Asia has been fun, most of the time. Thinking of Burma next. I see it opening in about 5 to 10 years. Yes I know, cell phones are not allowed there. Soon.
