Help How to free Internal Storage Space?

You can see the size of installed apps under Settings / Applications / Manage application. If you sort it by size (under Menu), then it's easy to find the worst memoryeaters and delete it.
Start with clearing cache - Market cache (it can have tens of MB and it's safe to delete it) and Browser cache (holds cached internet pages), you can also move some apps to SD card to free internal storage.
The easiest way is to find the apps you don't use and delete it (like I do occasionally) .

My question is how do I clear the cache for market? I've spent about 20 mins looking and can't find an option, it is the only thing eating data on my phone.

I have 25mb free on mine, I deleted Adobe flash, google maps, these have freed up loads of space. One thing I have noticed, when an app is apparently saves on the SD card and I remove it, it also clears space on the internal memory as well
When you move apps to SD card, part of them still remains in internal memory. That's why it also frees some internal space when you uninstall them.

There's various applications that you can go through every now and then and clear the data/cache.

As mentioned the cache in 'Market' can build up, I'd recommend emptying the browser cache from the browser itself rather than the Applications menu, I pressed the wrong bit and cleared out all my bookmarks too. Anything with a cache you can clear out.

Any pre-installed programs like Facebook, Maps, Flash etc that you don't use will take up space if they've been updated. If you're not fussed about new features 'uninstall updates' in the Applications menu and it will revert to the default

If you have all your contacts backed up via Google I recommend clearing out 'Contacts storage' and 'Facebook for HTC Sense' every so often. Once emptied you just need to sync them back up and all your contacts will reappear without the crap that accumulates over time (any links between Facebook and Google contacts will reconnect afterwards)

I use ADAO file Manager and that gives me internal memory as a %. It always seems to creep up to 89% no matter how much I uninstall or clear - the warning pops up at 90%. I suspect that there's some sort of clever memory management using up as much as it can

The low internal storage issue of HTC Desire had been discussed in length and breadth in a lot of forums. I had posted a similar stuff in other forums as well. Still, I am not able to find an appropriate solution without rooting the phone, to use data2sd/data2ext (?!). The following are the ways I handle it for time being.

  • Move apps to SD (using Froyo, so it comes naturally).
  • As support for flash is in-built in Android, I don't see a need for the Adobe Flash Update which consumes more than 10 MB. Hence removed it 4 months ago and did not see any issues.
  • Clear Cache. Apps like Market builds up cache quite fast and big. HTC Mail, Gmail, K9-Mail and Street View apps too have a lot of cache built. Besides this the stock Internet app may build up cache and data. I clear both cache and data as I do not store passwords and do not use bookmarks. Even if I have to I can backup bookmarks and retrieve it later.
  • If there are two apps that offer the same functionality, then the one that uses lesser memory is the obvious choice. (Replaced Aldiko with Moon-reader and Rock Player with Mobo player, on this principle)
  • Backed up infrequent apps to SD and unistalled them. I can install it when necessary. However, this is cumbersome and may lead to using a older version of the app, when it is installed from the backup.
  • Heard in a forum that there is a known bug which has the effect of increasing your contacts storage from around 10Mb to 80Mb. This is related to facebook contacts. I don't add facebook contacts to phone contacts (people).
  • Unistall unused apps. Review the apps installed on a regular basis and uninstall apps that I don not need. If I have not used an app for a long while probably I may not use it in future as well.

By doing the above I am able to maintain around 25-30 MB free storage, with about 66 apps besides the pre-installed apps by HTC.
But still with a meager 140 MB, this is a real pain.
Any thoughts/tips/novel ideas?

I am a bit nervous about rooting, considering the fact that most of the guides also indicate the risk of bricking the phone besides voiding the warranty. Though some assure that it is reversible, they also ask me to prepare my mindset to accept the risk of bricking the phone. This is not a cheap phone and hence I am not able to stomach that risk.

If you do your homework first and make sure you know what to do then the risk is actually very small - most problems are ultimately down to user error (including bad downloads, using the wrong tools, using a procedure that isn't applicable to their particular phone model). If you are interested, I recommend the guides linked from the root forum sticky post (I have a link to this in my sig), and then asking about anything you don't understand in that forum.

But it isn't for everyone, and you shouldn't do it unless you are comfortable with it.

I synced my google account using the 'accounts and sync' option in settings. but when i logged in my gmail account through a computer and searched my contacts, only the email ids were seen not the phone numbers.
is there a way to sync up my entire phone contacts as it is, with gmail?
thanks.

That's how it works with mine, I've just logged into my Gmail account on a PC, and all info - email, phone, postal address - is stored.

Are you sure all the info is actually in the gmail contacts, or do you have linked entries - one with a phone number (maybe on the SIM?) and one with an email. If a contact consists of linked entries there will be a little chainlink symbol at the top right corner, IIRC. I had a similar situation when I first got my Desire, and had to spend a few hours copying and pasting and deleting linked entries to get it all right.

You could export all your contacts to SD card, then open them up in excel, modify then re-import (after deleting all contacts) into your gmail account.

thanks. i have linked entries between phone and gmail. ths why the phone nos in the phone memory dont show up in the gmail contacts?
should I export just the phone contacts or the gmail ones or both to the sd card first?
thn delete the entire info under 'PEOPLE' before reimporting? or just the phone contacts in 'people'?
