is it possible to send mms over wifi? i was always under the impression that you cant, all the research iv done says no, and it wouldnt work on my htc hero, but as it seams on my evo 3d and my moms samsung intercept its allowing it. 3g turned off, wifi on, and pictures are sending.

in my previous trys, it wud work that if 3g and wifi were on the wifi icon covers the 3g and when sending a picture the 3g would pop up next to the wifi icon and dissapear after sending (showing 3g is needed for sending). but recently this hasnt been happening. im sending pictures when wifis on and 3gs off and its not turning 3g on and 3g doesnt pop up. could it be turning on 3g in the background without notifying us? and if so is this new because it didnt used to do this on my hero? its also doing this for visual voicemail (which also requires 3g)

SMS / MMS does indeed use the CDMA radio. That radio is responsible for digital voice and SMS (2G services), and 3G whether at full speed or 1x.

Your 2G is always on - as you know, if you have your 3G off and you're on wifi - you'll still get calls and SMS.

The 3vo is classified by Sprint as a handset capable of receiving "SMS audio messages" - it's how Visual Voicemail works.

If they've designed MMS to simply use the 2G part of the CDMA radio, there would be no standards violation and your indicators would be telling the truth.

MMS is just basically SMS carrying an email type of attachment.

so if im understanding correctly then its possible they made sending mms and visual voicemails without 3g or wifi, its being sent over the regular cervice and im just assuming its using the wifi? thanks for the quick response also ! :)

EarlyMon hit it head on. Completely impossible to send over wifi. Handcent is one of the texting apps I'm aware of that will allow you to over wifi at a premium of course.

hmmm that was my next question, i was going to ask if it could be handcent itself but now i realize that wouldnt explain visual voicemail. but i just tried sending pictures to my moms phone to test it out, no send without wifi or 3g. enable wifi and boom! it sends. so it cant be over 2g network. this is weird... and something new. but i still dont understand. there was no sign of 3g being used as far as icons up top of the screen, unless it was being used in the background. but its never done that before.

Try this. Put your phone in airplane mode and then cut on wifi and try it.

When I did that my msg sat there with that nice lil red X.

Hmmm. Well if thats the case, and its not working on 2g alone. And its not working on wifi alone. Its down to one of 2 things. Either somehow its using wifi and 2g together to do it (not likely because you guys seem pretty sure its not the wifi), or maybe the new froyo has a feature that when wifis enabled and 3g is off but needed, because wifi is on it automatically turns on 3g for a few secconds to send it and then turns it back off automatically (without showing the 3g icon at the top of the screen). This is all i can think of.

Or perhaps its not the new froyo, maybe its sence that turns on 3g in the background without showing u. Because come to think of it im comparing mine and my moms phones to my hero, but i had it rooted to aosp, not sence

It's an interesting issue, just chiming in to note this is Gingerbread, not Froyo.

Yes your right, i looked on wikipedia to refresh myself on what versions are what. The evo wud be gingerbread. I think my moms phone is froyo because thats a bit older. I can check tomorow bc is almost 3am in ny haha. So i cant c now. But with that being said then it wud make sence to be a sence feature. And that wud explain it not working in heros aosp

I haven't spent much time thinking about it but I have noticed that when I send pics from the e3d they go a whole lot faster. Not sure which radio it's using but I always have wifi enabled and am usually on a router somewhere.

I'll pay better attention next time. I remember on the e4g it took forever for pics to go.

Could it be that there's something in the software that tells the phone to send it as an email-to-MMS (for lack of better term) if WiFi is on?

You know, like 19725551212@mms.sprint.com or the like.

Just conjecturing.

That could be for handcent. I use that also. What about visual voicemail tho? I believe theyre recently downloading without 3g on also. But only if wifis on bc 2g alone doesnt do it
