I am using a T mobile Comet cell phone. Is there an app that allows me to connect my cell phone to internet through my laptop? I have used up my data plan for this month and for now, I have to pay for internet connection day by day for the cell phone. I have a laptop but I don't have wi-fi on laptop. I never set up the router and my wi-fi for the laptop is through cable TV company. So I just use a CAT-5 and connect my laptop to my modem directly. My laptop is using Ethernet connection. Do I even need an app for this?

There are a few ways you can do this.

You say you have wifi from your cable company, is there any reason you can't connect the phone to that?

You can also to Internet Pass-Through, if your phone supports it.

You can also get a program for the pc called ConnectifyMe, which allows your computer to share the ethernet connection via wifi.

The thing is that, the modem isn't a router. My laptop can get wi-fi signals only from the router. When I set up this cable connection, I have their tech coming over to set up the wire in the apt. He tried to set up the router with their modem but failed. I don't know what exactly the problem was. So I just use a CAT-5 instead. I don't want to have to pay for another tech to come over and try to connect the router to the modem. So I guess that means, right now, I don't have wi-fi signals in the apt unless I can get the router connected with the modem.

As for the other two ways, I will look into them. Thanks.

It sounds like this is your router? If so, I have heard of cable companies telling their techs to intentionally not get it working through a user owned router because they want to rent theirs to you. Could be what is happening. It is really really easy in most cases. You just plug the cable into the router where it says to. It probably says Internet or something like that next to the port. If that doesn't work, you could do a hard reset of the router with the modem already connected (assuming this is your router). Follow the router setup and it should work.

Ok, your first post you said your laptop was connected to wifi. So, since your router obviously isn't connected to your router, why dont you just connect it? You dont need a tech to do that, its just one cat5 cable between the modem and router.

A wifi router that isn't connected or working.

It doesn't seem like it's as simple as you stated. Perhaps his equipment has problems or incompatibility issues.

I'm thoroughly confused but here we go anyway. I assume your laptop has wifi capability (unless it's really ancient), so just set it up as a hotspot with a program like connectify Connectify for Windows - Turn your Laptop or Smartphone into a Secure Wi-Fi Hotspot . Don't need to change anything about your situation, laptop connects to internet via Ethernet cable, phone connects to laptop via laptop's wireless. DONE

Also the tech sounds useless, find a friend or someone else to come help you out.
