Handcent SMS - Text message program (better than the stock one IMO)
Meebo IM - AIM Messenger without ads!
USA Today - Love this paper!
i Music - Download MP3s to your phone!
My Account - Check your T-Mobile account status (minutes & text usage)
SportsTap - Check sport scores
Movies - Great for movie times and ratings!
Yelp - Check reviews and ratings of a restaurant you are not familiar with
Visual Voicemail - View your voicemail visually without having to call your voicemail.
BatteryLife - See you battery percentage
ColorDict - Gotta have the dictionary for school!
Shazam - Identify music you are not aware of
Ringdriod - Great for cropping your music into a ringtone
ASTRO - Program to look through your files like Windows Explorer
Calendar Widget 2 - Nice icon to know what today's date is

When I tried HAndcent on the G1 I found it far worse than chomp. That's changed? And the first app I'll download will probably be SMS Popup

Chomp is old news. Its cool, but handcent offers more custimization, more options, and mms and file attatchment options right inside the app.

I used to love chompe, but it took me like 2 days to get used to it and i've never looked back.

Visual voicemail? From what I know T-Mobile visual voicemail does not work on the nexus yet. Are you referring to Google voice?

I do love imusic and handcent. And don't forget dolphin browser. I don't know what I would do without it.

Yes, I am using visual voicemail not Google Voice. Login to your Tmobile account and change your phone to the HTC Touch Pro 2. Go to Manage then Plan and Services. Go to Other and add Visual Voicemail!

Plus, Handcent used to lag compared to Chomp - this was recently fixed making Handcent the obvious choice IMO.

These are the programs i used everyday, some like gmail unread count, should have been built into the orig app, and like all have said, Handcent SMS is great

I only wish the creators of Home++ and GDE could combine thoughts, i like the cube aspect of GDE but like the multipel icons at the bottom of Home++, just wish i could add a text icon to the bottom of Home ++. add that and the cube, and all would be good

Soccer Live Scores - nice football scores app. Shame about the use of the word "soccer"
Movies - Flixter app. Reviews, trailers, cinema times
Beeb player - iPlayer app. Not perfect but best out there (only?)
Net Sentry - logs net use. Not essential for me but good for those on tight fair use policy
Astro - file manager
Ultimate Hold Em Timer - best I've found for poker night with the lads.
iPingpong - nifty table tennis game. Good for the toilet!
Twidroid Pro - full feature twitter app.

Now, if only we can have the iPhone Facebook app for Android...

Visual Voicemail is available on the N1...I found out how to do this on Nexus One Forum - Google Phone Forum it actually required me to call the rep and was a pain in the ass but it worked.

I have recently changed from Chomp to Handcent due to all of ur comments. It is better. Some apps are to keep my daughter busy

No problem. If it doesn't function correctly just remove the visual voicemail and repeat the step. It happened to me and I had to do it twice but now it's been working fine.

i added the visual voicemail and did not have to call anyone. what i did find however, after a few unsuccesuful attempt to complet install, is that in order to finish install not only does wifi have to be off (which you are prompted to do), but also you must make sure you are on the wcdma prefered. i had mine on wcdma only (for my 3g issue) and it would not work. i turned it back to preferred and it worked fine.

just a heads up for those of you with the 3g issue trying to do this.

but i really do prefer google voice visual voicemail. it works faster than tmobile visual voice, and not only do you get the number, and the recorded message, you also get a written transcript of the message. this is great if you cannot check the voicemail, you can just read it. there are many times for me a call is not possible. sometimes i cannot make a call or just in a loud place and would not be able to hear it.

another heads up. googles transcripts take a lot of interpretation. my voice to text is way, way better than googles transcripts. i am sure it is a limitation to how clearly and loud the person is speaking when they leave the message. but it is better than nothing....untill you think your dog is dead because of a messed up transcript. (yes this did happen to me). all i made out of it was "your dead dog." NOT COOL GOOGLE!
