homerun derby

We'll just have to wait and see :p
It'd be fun if it were a Giants vs Yankees WS:p

If the G men do make it though, I hope its against Boston. Just like we took advantage of Vlad in the outfield during the last WS, I can see us taking advantage of Big Papi at first. Defense wins championships!

They won't put Ortiz at first b/c of Adrian Gonzalez. They are stronger with Youk at 3rd and A Gonz at 1st. Ortiz would be a clutch pinch hitter though. I wouldn't mind watching your Giants tear apart the Red Sox if that were to happen though.

Where would they put Ortiz? Boston would never leave his bat off the lineup for the entire WS. What were their line ups for interleague play?

They tried out Ortiz at 1B and A. Gonz in RF for two games but I think Francona realized that it was a horrible alignment since they lost those two games.
Which is exactly why I'd want to face them in the WS. I know they would not leave Ortiz's bat off, so that'd HAVE to put Gonzo in RF (which, seeing how RF at AT&T park ate up Vlad, is going to be a huge advantage for us - we probably have one of the most difficult RF's to play in). Bring on Boston!!! :D

Ortiz is actually very good at first base. I think you'd be very surprised. Yes, there is an issue with our line up @ NL home games. We have also been plagued with the injury bug a bit, and that was evident during interleauge play.

Lets see what happens with teams after the trade deadline.

Ortiz is good at first? What drugs are you smoking and where can I get some?

He's been a DH for the last 3-4 seasons, not touching first base since they have a younger, more viable option at that position (Youk and now A-Gonz). In all the years of watching Yanks vs Red Sox games, I don't ever recall Ortiz being a good first baseman.

I'm with Hitman on this one. Ortiz at 1st would be a wreck for the Red Sox, and I'd welcome that with open arms if I were an NL team going against Boston in the WS. A few drag bunts towards the 1st base line and maybe they'll end up doing what the Rangers did with Vlad last WS: bench him.

you guys act as if this hasn't happened, for inter-league play every year , and also the two world series that they've won. you think its a wreck because he's a bigger guy? plenty of first basemen are.. look at prince fielder.

stop drinking the hateraid imo :D

There's no haterade to be consumed. What you are stating is completely false. Ortiz has been the perma-DH (and a good one at that) for Boston. When they called up Youk, you forget that they had acquired Mike Lowell from the Marlins, the same trade that brought Beckett to the Sox. Ortiz might have played a few years at first (none of which with Boston) but that definitely does not warrant the title of being a good defensive 1B.

Career stat: Ortiz has played 250 games in his career at first base. He's also never played any other position besides DH.

The difference between Ortiz and Fielder is that Fielder is actually athletic, especially for a man of his size. He still can move better than Ortiz. The age difference helps tons as well.

So roughly around 2000 innings give or take playing in the field, and he has a .989 fielding percentage, is still pretty good... HE COULD play 1st, I'm not saying he'd be a gold glove, or an all-star first baseman, but he's definitely serviceable at first base.

And I know very well that we had Lowell on his team, I said he played in inter-league at first every year, Lowell would usually sit and Youk would slide over to 3rd base, unless Ortiz was given a day off.

Don't forget that these guys careers start before the pros, and that he practices as a 1st basemen, every spring training and every practice, warm up session every year he's played in the pros, from start to finish.

He's also played 4 games in the World Series, 1.000% fielding percentage, talk about pretty damn good for a guy who "can't play first" I'm not putting it up for debate that he should start for the Red Sox at first, or anywhere ( I like him as our DH) but to say he couldn't go play first somewhere is silly.

1014 innings in the field to be exact. I don't believe I said that he couldn't play first base but rather that he isn't their best option at first base. Let's put it this way - he's in the lineup for his bat contribution, not his fielding skills.

Where are your stats coming from, because I'm not seeing the same stats as you. And of course he's in there for his hitting, a monster hitter without any chance of injuring himself on the field, why would you if you didn't have too.

The only place that matters, ESPN.

I still don't think you are seeing the point here. Boston is a much weaker team with him playing first base, end of story. Anyone that knows the game of baseball as well as I do, would understand this.
