Help Can you switch off 3G and 4G on Revolution

Can you turn off 3 and 4G on the Revolution? Battery is draining because the 3 and 4g come and go and then nothing

Not your problem with battery. This is your coverage. Turn it off and service won't work. You have to look at battery usage in manager and start from there. Screen brightness saves, not having other killers on when not in use etc. Set sync times farther apart in data delivery. Turning off browser when not in use. Make sure wifi off unless in zone to receive. Wifi does save data use but burns battery if not able to use.

When I first got my Revolution I turned off the 4G, the data enabled and the background data. Some how, some way it also turned off the 3G so I was using 1x for a day or 2. Even though the battery life was awesome I was struggling to use some of the most basic features on the phone. I would say that 3 out of every 5 text messages I sent were NOT going through. I had to keep on re-sending them and that was very annoying. There are ways to extend the life of your battery...I get about 2 and half days solid off one charge.

Maybe I didn't explain good enough, phone was doing good going all day with some texting and around 80% for 9 hours off charger and have background data off. Now phone keeps jumping from 4g to 3 g to nothing and I think that is draining battery comepletely because it must be searching. Dont have wifi at work so phone has to stay on network which should be 4g being we have it here and get full signal. Need phone to recieve calls but battery is draining but wife is taking charger to work today and keeping it plugged in. New (refurb) phone coming Thursday LOL, buy new and get 3 weeks out of it then get a used replacement that sucks

I really dont know how else to explain it besides...my phone, on its own, decided to use 1x after I turned a few settings off. There are threads in here that explain how to turn off your 4G. As for turning off the 3G and only using 1x, I am not to sure. I got lucky when my phone did it.

Just an FYI, I work in a city with 4G but live in another that only has 3G. I tried setting 3G only for a while and then turned 4G back on and let the phone switch on it's own when I commute. I haven't noticed any significant power use differences between the two modes and now just leave the 4G on. - MarkC

The problem is how do you turn off on Revolution, I cant find how to do what your doing that is why I am asking. Thanks

From the Settings menu, choose Wireless and Networks -> Mobile Networks -> System Select -> Network Mode, then choose CDMA only from the drop down list. That will turn 4G off. (The phone will reboot to make the change.)

Someone mentioned an app that did the same thing, but still required a reboot. I don't know if a bootless app works on the Revo yet.

The carriers have to upgrade their networks to 4G and the major players are working on it. Verizon adds major cities as fast as they can and just announced a few more. You have to wait until it's available in your area to have it available on your phone. - MarkC

I've seen several mentions of using WiFi in place of the 3G/4G network. I got my Revo today (my first Droid phone) and just started to learn about it. I have a home WiFi network. Is there any big reason I should use that instead of the cell network? I can see transferring files from phone to PC that way, but what other uses would make WiFi better than cell net?

1. It's faster (compared to 3G, that is).
2. No VZW data usage MBs.
3. Some downloads, like large game apps, require Wi-fi downloads.

IDK how y'all feel about taking advice from the Esteem owners but WiFi uses less battery because WiFi is tied to strictly 1 access point and does not bother looking for a stronger signal from the same source of that exact WiFi... 4G is a cellular signal and is ALWAYS trying to search for a stronger signal from ANYWHERE in any which direction to strengthen itself.

I agree that wifi uses less battery... but for a different reason...
1. the separate chip currently used in 4G handsets can be turned off when on wifi
2. transmitting via wifi probably doesn't take as much power because you're only sending down the hall... not down the street or a mile away...
