ok - I'm at a total loss. How can I install Google quick search bar or google voice search on my HTC Hero?

I've gone to the google android app website and followed the instructions for sending a text message to my phone with a link but that link just opens the browser to a general google browser search page.

I'm trying to get the app on my phone, the one with voice recognition. I searched for it using Appbrain but nothing popped up.

Then I went to google mobile products on my phone and tapped on Voice Search, it took me to a d/l page, "Download from Market" but when I tapped on that link and choose Market, it reported back "The requested item could not be found"

I know I'm missing something very basic but can't figure it out?

Thanks.

I think that Voice Search might only be for Android 2.2 and up devices. If you are rocking Android 2.1, then you might be out luck.

You can always root your handset and flash an Android 2.2 or Android 2.3 ROM though. It is easy and we would be glad to guide you through the process if you step on over to the root section of this subforum.

thanks - so how do I tell which version I have? the firmware version says 2.1-update 1. The software number says 2.32.651.2 and there are other numbers such as baseband version, kernel version, etc.

I assume it's the firmware version?

You have Android 2.1. If you are interested in rooting and updating to a newer version of Android, please head for the root section. :)

We have a lot of knowledgeable folks on the subject, including yours truly. See you there, if you are interested in trying it out. ;)
