Help Vortex or Ally?

Ok folks, I got my daughter an ally for Christmas, after playing with it for a few days, it just seems really sluggish, so, should I use the 30 day worry free to get the vortex?

I'd say yes. It's not a bad phone, and I've heard questionable things about the Ally.

About the 30 day worry free thing, I tried to do that to get an Incredible after my wifes Vortex was giving us problems, and apparently there is a $35 restocking fee they make you pay. I dealt with the manager for a good 10 minutes and he would not budge at all on waiving it. Luckily we got the issue with the Vortex straightened out and just got a new replacement (even though the issue ended up being with Handcent and not the phone lol), but I think it's complete bullshit that they offer this supposed "worry free guarantee" but then make you pay some stupid restocking fee! If you do attempt it, let us know how it pans out.

Well does your daughter enjoy the Ally? Is she a heavy texter? Has she ever used a touchscreen to do all of her texting (Vortex)? Unless she is someone that really pays attention to specs and product reviews, I would save my $35. More than likely the Ally will take care of all of her communication needs just fine.

It all depends like AssertiveBard said. Texting is easier on the Ally. I heard that vortex had some issues. And Ally's not a bad phone. I have one and it's pretty good. IMO, i would stick with Ally

With Swype, texting is cake on the Vortex and my wife loves it. Can't Swype on a hard keyboard

Swype is out for ally on beta. So u can swype and hard keybrd text

If texting is your first priority, then yeah I agree that Ally is better. The physical keyboard in Ally is one of the best in android phones.
The main issue with Ally is small internal memory (both RAM and storage) and it's stuck to 2.1 for now. So I switched to Vortex and it feels much faster with bigger RAM, 2.2. I like sleek form factor of Vortex too. I wish that LG would make next version of Ally soon with faster processor and bigger screen.

The ally is much faster with a custom ROM, but I know rooting and such is not for everyone.

i had the same problem with at&t
i got an lg quantum(windows phone) and didnt like it at all, i had a droid so i took it back to at&t and they would not budge on the $35 either but i went ahead and paid it because i figured id end up paying way more than tht in apps from the windows market beacuse almost all their app you have to pay for

I have both an Ally and a Vortex. The Ally was great once I rooted it, put on a Custom Recovery, and installed Velocity 1.1. I liked the slide-out keyboard. The devs on the Ally forum did a fantastic job with the phone.

On the other hand, my Vortex was pretty much perfect out of the box for what I wanted it to do. It came with 2.2.2 on it. Once I rooted it and got rid of the VZW and Bing apps, that was all I felt inclined to do. AND, it's running Netflix which I could never do on the Ally. If it had the Ally's keyboard, it would be perfect for me.

It's all a question of personal preference. Obviously, for low budget phones, you can't expect Droid Incredible performance. And if you have no interest in rooting, the Vortex is likely a better choice for you, since the Ally is almost unusable out of the box.

I'm using this version. I believe it's the version that doesn't check for compatibility. If prompted that there is a newer version, click Cancel, as the newer version will likely not work.
