Hmmm some not so good reviews

I can see that they might be a little nit picky but coming from two different and well respected sources, that is really making me think twice. I know that it's Open Source and things can be fixed but I really don't want to be a beta tester.

I'll have to come to my own conclusions when I get it and see if I can live with the shortcomings, at least for now.

No matter HOW bad the reviews are this thing is gonna kick butt compared to WinMo on a dash. UGH.

I personally am a hacker type and get perverse pleasure out of making things with minor imperfections better. No thanks to windows mobile, up to now I've been stuck with a VERY imperfect platform that I couldn't do jack to fix...

Either way, we all have 14 days to makeup our minds after we get it so no sweat.

Yep, and that's the review that really counts: your own.

I read both reviews, didn't see anything in there that I didn't already know. I see what they said about the GPS, but I'm not too worried. First time signal acquisition can take up to 15 minutes, longer if you are in a shielded area.

Both reviews make some good points about flaws in the G1, but you've also got to understand that these "gadget fetish" sites aren't the best way to judge about how good the G1 actually is as a phone for a semi-normal person.

I don't know if either was around back then, but these are the type of sites that trashed the iPod when it came out because it was expensive and simplisitic and the Nomad had a bigger hard drive.

I think Walt Mossberg of the WSJ is probably one of the best tech (and most fair) reviewers out there: http://ptech.allthingsd.com/20081015/google-answers-the-iphone/ . He indentified some problems too, but concluded, "Overall, the G1 is a very good first effort, and a godsend for people who prefer physical keyboards or T-Mobile but want to be part of the new world of powerful pocket computers."
