No Gtalk Video Chat on-board?

Don't forget he didn't have a release day photon, he basically had a test device. So while he helped out MAJORLY with even making me order one I think with something like that we will just have to wait and see. From what I've been reading this morning I'm getting even MORE excited!! UPS BETTER bring it today!LOL. Even though it only shows my case as being shipped I have faith the phone is with it.

Right you are... that's what I thought was the reason (pre-release device). Just wanted to see what he thought and how Gtalk Video Chat worked. Maybe he installed Vtok, I dont know, and thought it was native Gtalk Video Chat. This is a bummer but I assume that Gtalk Video Chat is coming soon.

Way to call me out as the heading of a thread. My phone had gtalk out of the box. Didn't have to do an update or anything like that. Worked without a hitch. Video and sound both worked.

I didn't mean to call you out Shawheim... I was just trying to get your attention so you would be sure to comment. Sorry if it seemed as if I was calling you out. I was trying to see how you got GTalk Video Chat to work on your pre-release device. Any thoughts... maybe you had an later build of 2.3.4 than the shipping software?

Oh I didn't mean call me out as a bad thing, its kinda cool in a way. But I didn't have to do anything to make gtalk work. All I did was sign in on my phone, then sign in to my other gmail account on the computer. On the phone it had the little green camera beside my name as soon as I logged in, that's the only reason I tried it out at all.

You're lucky. I was about to go to bat for shawheim...LOL. But next time you want to make sure he sees a thread, maybe PM him the link to the thread you started, instead of adding it to the title?

Nontheless, just for everyone, keep in mind that shawheim got a Demo phone, so there's no telling what the seller he bought it from actually put on the phone in the first place.

Okay, back on topic, I've never really used the video chat option on the EVO because all the programs I tried absolutely sucked!!...LOL...Qik, Fring, Skype...they all were awful. Tried Fring chatting with my best friend and it was always an issue of him not hearing me, or vice versa.

If it works, that's cool. If not, definitley not a deal breaker for me.

Do you have the phone to verify?

Also what review did the OP read that stated no Gtalk video? I have read all the reviews and none even mention it, and I thought it was a standard feature in 2.3.4 except on phones without FFC.

I read like 8 or 9 reviews today... This Is My Next, Android Central's, PC World's, PC Mag's, SlashGearss, Gizmodo's, and I can't remember the others. Phil Nickinson in his Ask Me About the Photon 4G thread on Android Central's forums said that it didn't have GTalk Video Chat not that it didn't come with GTalk pre-installed... big difference. I also read it on one of the other sites but I can't remember which one.

I just got mine delivered from UPS and once the screen protector goes on I will try it out and let you all know.

Shawheim... We're good man! It's because of your "preview" that I decided to use my upgrade and get the Photon. You're my hero!!!:p

Being that the phone that Shawheim was previously from someone else and the phone was a unlocked developers phone, I do believe that the previous user installed the Google Talk 1.3 with video apk that is shown over at xda.

See thread.

TS out

So does that mean you cant get gtalk without rooting first? Is there no other app that will allow you to do the face/calling?

According to reviews I have found online this morning Gtalk Video Chat is not included or enabled on the Photon.

Shawheim thought you said you used it to make a video call to your girlfriend?

I have a Photon. I bought the first one at my Sprint store in the mall today, and there is no video chat in Google Talk.

I ran down some of the alternatives:
Qik: I haven't managed to set up a 2-way chat session, but the webcast mode seems to work with video but no audio. (Ironically enough, the Evo View transmits audio but no video.)
Skype: no video chat
Vtok: this is an interesting little app that interops with Google Talk. Seems to work on both WiFi and 3G (my Evo View works on 3G, but not on WiFi. Maybe my router is puking, since I only have 4 devices signed in to GTalk right now.)

So at the moment, NO GOOGLE TALK VIDEO CHAT on the retail Photon.
