thinking about wanting upgrades....why?

right now i was thinking about the galaxy s2 coming. the fact that it doesnt have a keyboard, the fact that the epic 2 will just be a slight upgrade, the fact that i would have to pay a good amount for those phones, and the fact that my phone is still mint.

i just decided im going to wait until something comes thats really different.

andriod is still the same

so what if a new phone benchmarks faster then mine?

mine is still as fast as i need it to be.

better camera? for what, i barely use it.

nothing new has yet to blow me away that i should want an upgrade.

dual core is just a craze thats going on. what would i really need it for?

im going to wait for something awesome.

my epic is still epic and it will continue to be epic until it breaks.

just saying, for the last 2 years ive continued to get new phones

started with the ic902, then the touch pro, then the hero and now the epic.

and the epic is still a beast even after a year.

I can agree with you OP, its all up to the particular individual on what they want and need... and there's many people that feel the same way you do. Keeping up with technology is really expensive because of the speed at which the OEM's operate and release new devices. Some people like buying the latest and greatest, and if that's what is right for them, and they can afford it, then by all means have at it... but we're all different and in my opinion that's a good thing

I upgrade to the latest and greatest, but I don't think I've ever lost more than a few dollars in selling the current phone and buying the new one. The Epic with a solid gingerbread will be a desirable phone for quite a while, especially considering the supposed Epic 2 doesn't seem like a major upgrade. So if one does upgrade, they should still get a pretty penny for their original making the outlay for the next phone minimal. So you don't eat out one or two nights, brown bag lunch for a week or what not. If you sell old to buy new, the cash outlay isn't really much of an expense at all, and is a good reason to actually take care of your shit. I constantly buy and sell gear, and 70% of the time, I picked it up at such a deal that I can get all, most and sometimes more than what I paid for it. I don't touch the accessories and keep the box and paperwork. The one year upgrades on Sprint keep us gadget freaks happy, and one year old premium phones have a decent resale value to keep new phone costs at a minimum.

And upgrade why? I want...
a keyboard with better spacing, staggered keys, more raised keys with a grippier feel.
a phone that's possibly a little thinner and lighter.
I'll take some additional weight if they put in a bigger battery.
HDMI out so I can stream to a tv.
4.3" SAMOLED+ screen, though I don't think that one is happening. I'd also take more natural colors than the oversaturation of SAMOLED which is still better than washed out LCD. I think we'll get a 4" SAMOLED+ screen with the Epic 2.

While the Epic is a phone I can easily consider holding on to, it's successor with some of the above could easily be one I'd hold on to for longer than a year.

The problem there is you won't get a large enough sensor to do 10mp justice. So while you might get more detail you'll also introduce more noise. Think 8mp is plenty unless you increase the sensor size. I have a mytouch 4g slide to play with. It's touted as being the best camera on phone out there. It's only 8mp.

I believe it. I only said 10MP because I have a Kodak 10MP camera, and it's pretty nice. Plus, I wish I didn't need a camera *and* a phone in my pocket on vacations and stuff.

You notice great picturesque moments every day. I simply want to be able to capture them on a moment's notice. The 5MP in the Epic 4G doesn't suck, but it is not amazing.

An 8MP camera would be the shnizz. I could make up for the rest with GIMP

I wish that I had a positive experience with this phone, honestly. But alas, it wasn't in the cards for me. I'm on my second Epic and I'm still not happy with it.

I'm very practical with my money. I do a lot of research before making big purchases. I did my research and picked the Epic at the beginning of September 2010. At first I was happy but things just got bad from there and haven't really gotten better for me and my Epic.

So, I'm thinking of trying to change my bad luck by switching manufacturers and formats. I'm going to try the Motorola Photon 4G most likely once I'm ready to upgrade in September. If I do, I'll trade in my Epic so that I'll only spend a few bucks to upgrade. The Motorola Photon 4G seems like it's going to be a beast too. Maybe I'll have better luck and I'll get a phone that I like and that isn't full of issues.

I know this is going to sound weird, but then again I think most people in this forum think that I'm weird anyway but here goes...

I don't like Ebay. I deleted my account because I was barely using it and they did an "upgrade" that was forcing me to change my user ID. It was more trouble than it was worth to me.

So, I'll just have to make do with the trade-in. I could sell it on Craigslist but I really don't want the hassle of dealing with buyers and delivery or pick up. Plus there is something wrong with the micro USB port on my Epic and I don't know if anyone else would be willing to put up with it but me.

You're under a year on the warranty. Take it to sprint and get it taken care of. That is if you found the desire to try and make a few bucks on selling it.

the trade-in value is a joke for the epic at various sites ... you are way way better off selling yourself. i think best site was like $70 for epic in top condition.

I agree with the OP. The Epic is still pretty new to me and to be honest, it's probably the best phone Sprint has to offer. I don't think it's worth upgrading just because something slightly better comes out. Especially with the lack of a keyboard, it almost feels like a downgrade.

The epic 2 will have a keyboard as will the rumored LG. If the LG is true it will be more of an upgrade than the epic 2 will be.

I've had a great time with the Epic but will still be upgrading to either the Galaxy S II (The Within) or the Nexus Prime (If it comes to Sprint). I'm going to try and hold out for the Prime since the epic is holding over my needs more than well enough. The only thing I am worried about is that the longer I have my Epic, the more the value will go down.

I sold my HTC Hero a year ago for $150, I'm worried I won't see much more than that for the Epic which is a shame since the tech simply blows away the Hero. I guess with the quick pace of the tech field, it's to be expected.

Do remember the Epic is still the best slider out there for sprint, and I don't believe the Epic 2 will be out when the new slates come. So the market shouldn't dip that much for it. Especially if it's rolling with official gingerbread.

The main reason I'm upgrading is because I want the dual core processor and the Super AMOLED + display. I still love my Epic and will be keeping it. I look at it as a luxury, not a necessity because the Epic is still a great phone.

I think there will be much more innovation next summer. Intel's new mobile processors will allow manufacturers to make even faster devices without sacrificing battery life. If you were to surf on 4G for an hour on any current device, you would use almost 50% of you battery. I think this will change in the near future as this will become a focus of manufacturers.

I agree with the general premise that there is no immediate need for Epic owners to upgrade. I will probably wait until next year unless I have to travel internationally in which case I will buy a photon

I agree with OP. At first I was actually very excited to snatch up the Galaxy S II/ the Within/the Epic 4G Touch/whatever they actually call it but honestly by current Epic simply does the job. I do think I will be picking up the next Nexus phone though, especially if the rumors about it are true:

Though I'm currently relatively satisfied with Epic... I've had it up to here *trust me on this one when I say my hand is over my head* with Samsung phones. The phone is good, not great. It's not epic.

Yet... no phones really draw me away... is this mobile complacency?
