If you have a rooted phone (those using JF firmware, or the cupcake builds from xda), you can install it just fine. If you don't know how to root your phone, it's pretty easy, though you will have to do a wipe and lose your installed apps, etc. When xda is back up I'll link to a tutorial on doing it

Everyone’s looking forward to Cupcake, right? Not so fast, says Big in Japan - the team behind the popular ShopSavvy application - Android 1.5 presents more than a few problems for developers. According to Alexander Muse, applications currently running on Android won’t necessarily be compatible with Cupcake 1.5; that means a mad rush to download the new firmware and rebuild their software.

Compounding the problem is the fact that the Android Market won’t allow more than one version of an app, which means developers aren’t able to simply create a new, 1.5-friendly update and leave the existing version in place for those without Cupcake. Instead, Big in Japan face creating a new build that’s also backward compatible with earlier versions of Android, something they conservatively estimate should normally take around two to three weeks of development.

However according to some reports, Cupcake will be pushed as an over-the-air to Android device owners in just two days, and it’s already live in Spain. That means three weeks of development needs to be squashed into two days, never-mind any time for testing:

“The good news is that we will release our new version whenever Cupcake is pushed OTA to users. The bad news it will be untested. It will have bugs, bugs that we will fix. Please bear with us and realize that we don’t have much choice in the matter” Alexander Muse, Big in Japan

As Alexander notes, the Big in Japan team are likely more prepared for the coding challenge ahead than many others, particularly those part-time developers who have been cooking up Android apps in their spare time. The public perception of Android as a platform depends in no small part on the success and stability of its third-party software; have Google shot themselves in the foot by allowing carriers to rush out Cupcake 1.5?

Those of you who are JF rooted and are looking for modded builds like JF did, look here: sapphire-port-dream - Google Code
Haykuro is basically the JF of cupcake, I'm running ADB1.5Hr2 ( http://www.droiddeveloper.com/hrbuilds/Hv1.5r2-signed.zip ) right now, and it's great!
As for those complaining about cupcake breaking their apps, I'm sure there's a way they could detect if they were running cupcake on boot and offer to install a "Cupcake version" (You could have Shopsavvy on the market, then they would add a Shopsavvy cupcake version as a separate app, as to preserve backwards compatibility with those not running cupcake.)

After upgrading, does it take a long time for the phone to boot up? Mine has been sitting at the Android splash screen (new look, so I'm quite sure that the update was successful) for about ten minutes now. It appears as if it's working, then pauses for a bit then starts moving/working again.

OK, it's not booting at all.

I've tried re-installing the recovery image file twice now, and it still hangs at the Android splash screen. Anybody that can give me any help on how to correct/reverse this, I would appreciate it. Worse case scenario, I'll just shoot it with the 12 gauge and utilize the insurance coverage I have on it.

Disregard this entire post, I guess. After installing the software four times, I'm finally up and running!

Also, is the build feature complete? anything thats not working/missing/amazing?

I have just put the 1.5 firmware onto my g1 and I have never loved my. Phone so much! They have done such a good job! Runs fastener, looks better, and does more! Ps. I am typing this with my new on screen keyboard!!!

Well I. Just added cupcake and its working great the only problem I am having is that with my connection or my signal it says there is no connection then it comes back and It does it quite alot. And my buddys does the same thing has anybody had this?

As far as I know its for developers only, however why did I get the update delivered to my phone.

it was at like 1pm UK time today I got a popup telling me theres a new version to download. I've just got the bog standard t-mobile g1 btw.

Also it seems 2 of my apps and my apps download page has gone a bit weird.

The my download page is not in alphabetical order and it claims all my apps are uninstalled when they all still work perfectly...

My power manager has failed and so has shake awake app (No surprises since there popular apps and will probably be fixed soon.

Am I missing something

My understanding is that the UK is actually getting the updates OTA, to regular G1s. The US is still waiting.
