Handcent doesn't work 100% for the Hero. Seem it doesn't like the SenseUI, as it throws up errors every few seconds when I try to reply back to a text.

Haven't tried Chomp, but it can't be as unusable as Handcent.

I'm new here so I can't add much to these forums but I can say I have handcent on my Hero (Sprint) and it works like a charm, never had a problem. In fact, I just recently noticed there is the ability to speak my text and have handcent transcribe it. I love that

Currently i just use the Hero standard SMS application which is ok.. I am intereted in trying out Chomp thouugh but before i do I have a couple of questions:

1) I link my contacts to Facebook for the contact pictures, are these pictures used by Chomp?

2) Do you have to pay to send text by chomp? read this on the chmop SMS website and it got me wondering:

How much does it cost?

We charge the same price per SMS message sent to any supported country in the world via the chompSMS network. We reckon you're in United Kingdom, where the price is only 7 pence per SMS.
The chompSMS application itself is free.

Currently i pay nothing for texts as i have a text bundle with Orange...

Think i have just found out the answers myself on the Chomp forums!

Ok, fixed it.
Turns out that Motorola Cliq, adds the pictures because it adds the facebook and twitter contacts, but the contacts themselves dont have a real picture, its just that Cliq shows the facebook and twitter pics only on the Cliq.
To fix it, just download SyncmyPix from the android market and after you sync the pics with that app, when you go back to chompsms, contacts will now have pictures.
Hope it helps. Loving chomp sms. Im using it combined with SMS unread count and it works great, although a few times it force closes. but love the look and speed.

Is chompSMS free?
The application itself is free. If you send messages using

Handcent just answered my prayer last 2 days. Now the delivery report icons changed dynamically. If the delivery is under "Pending", it will show a clock icon. If it is "Received", it will show a green tick icon. Now I don't have to press on the old icons one by one to see the delivery status.

But in my Hero, certain SMS are still showing blank if I open it from the notification bar. I have to open the SMS twice to read it.

I think I prefer Handcent... JUST.

Why:
1.) When sending a group SMS, I can split it up into separate conversations.
2.) Support for lighting up the trackball on my hero
3.) The ability to open up the Quick Reply in the background BEHIND the lock screen

On the flip side, I have unfortunately had to uninstall Handcent due to a bug. My contacts have all disappeared when I click the little + symbol when composing a message. The ability to "sent to multiple" in this way is the primary reason I don't use the standard messaging app, so this is a deal breaker.

Anyone got a solution?
