How to automatically have droid go to Car Mode

Hi All,

Is there a setting or app that will automatically switch my droid to car mode when I am moving faster than walking? When on a train or plane I would want to override it. But by far most of the time I am going faster than walking speed I would want it to switch to car mode.

Thanks for the input....

Hum...not sure I follow your logic....I just want it to switch to "Car Home" (the screen with the big buttons) when I am going faster than walking...

Car mode but no maps??? Hmmmmm ok so what do you consider car mode and what features do you want? What home page do you want? Are you wanting it to start at 3 miles an hour and cancel after 80 mph?
You are vague in what you want and ASSUME we know.

It would have to work off the GPS plus screen stay on would have to be included and that would put a huge drain on the battery. Why would you have a need for that when you could just push a widget.

I just want much past 10 miles per hour for my droid to switch to "car home". You know, the screen with the 5 or 6 large buttons in an arc across the screen. Not trying to be difficult here, just asking a question

You are not being difficult, just a little vague. Questions are always encouraged. Just trying to get a handle on what you are wanting and the possible need in order to atttempt tp help.

I was just saying that if it doesn't switch until you are going over 10mph then you would be driving while you are trying to program the destination when you should really program the destination while you are still parked for safety reasons.

The only thing I can figure after reading through this thread carefully is that ... at some point, droid-in is going to be thrown into the back of a white, unmarked cargo van, with his hands tied behind his back, and he wants his DROID to go into Car Mode without having to press anything so that ... umm ... err ... ahh . . .

OK, that's as far as I can get with the information given. :(

Do we really need an app for everything??? Can't this be solved by putting a simply shortcut on your desktop, and when you're going to go faster than walking speed, simply tap the icon???

And just some more food for thought. If an app did exist that would turn car mode on automatically based on speed, the GPS receiver would have to be turned ON all of the time, resulting in less battery time (which people would whine about). And, then there's the fact that the DROID would have to have an open view of the satellites in order to detect the current speed of the DROID user. That's an app doomed to failure before conception. ;)

Umm ... my work is done here.

He's not saying he wants to open the Maps or Navigation application, he's saying he wants to open the "Car Home" screen, as would normally happen when you place the Droid into the Car Dock, or start the Car Home app manually.

Here's what I do. I have locale with the headphones plugin and the launch app plug in. I also have an app called dock simulator.

I have a headphone cord connected to the car stereo and when I plug in my droid, locale lauches dock simulator automaticly and I select car dock and I'm off

I doubt he is going to have a headphone cord connected to the car stereo in situations like when he is riding on the subway....

The OP simply wants to know if there is an app that allows for changing of the look of the home screen based upon speed, as recorded by GPS - nothing has been said about him trying to use navigation features, maps, etc.

Now, AFAIK, there is no such app - but since GPS is built into the phone, it should be relatively easy to do this.

Of course, my subway example above is then moot, as I doubt you'll be gettign a GPS signal down underground....

And then what is he going to do from the car home screen? leave it sit there?. I guess theoretically he could just want to go to the car home screen to activate the voice search, but I doubt that is the case. He is probably going to do something that involves interacting with the phone ie. maps or navigation.

Also, the reason I assumed it was to use maps or navigation was this:
When on a train or plane I would want to override it.
Which I understand as he doesn't want car home to come up in those situations and only wants it to come up when he is driving his car.

Finally, I'm with messenger13 in that what the OP wants to do isn't feasible because the gps would constantly have to be on and recording your speed which would drain the battery way too fast.

Here's a question along some of the same lines as wanting to go to car home (because there have been some absolutely incredibly helpful tips already given, like "get a car dock" - WOW, what an amazingly helpful tip).

I have a case on my droid, which, of course, will not fit in the car dock. I have a dock that I use, but any style of magnet used in different variations of size, location, etc, only activate the bedside mode. I WOULD be interested in an app that would activate the car mode so that I could use it in the car without having to take my case off to use the unprotected Droid in a mount that will only work if the Droid has no protection.

Or if someone was so inclined as to actually give some helpful advice on what might be wrong with why the Droid won't go in to car mode in the 1st place, I would greatly appreciate this assistance.

I will point out that it is rooted by SM Updater and I have not done anything application deletion wise. I see the com.android.cardock available under applications, but perhaps it is corrupt? It is showing 0.00MB in size, so .....?

Edit - I see most members in this post seem to have shown interest in helping, it just seems tjbugs1 is useless.

First, Starting your post by insulting people and demanding help isn't a good way to ask for help.

I WOULD be interested in an app that would activate the car mode so that I could use it in the car without having to take my case off to use the unprotected Droid in a mount that will only work if the Droid has no protection.
YOU may want to TRY "Car Home"

Or if someone was so inclined as to actually give some helpful advice on what might be wrong with why the Droid won't go in to car mode in the 1st place, I would greatly appreciate this assistance.
The way you word that almost makes me not want to answer it....but anyway, from playing around with it, it appears to be the polarity (north or south) of the magnet that determines if it goes into car mode or bedside mode. Depending on what kind of magnet you are using, try flipping it over to the other side or using the other end.

I'm confused. Maybe you already know this... but there's a Car Home app that comes with Android that launches the Car Home... so just use that :)

1st, I agree and apologize, but found it almost ridiculous that people come here for support and see "it's okay to ask questions" and then in the same quote box or the next box an insult or smart remark from that very person or allow posters to submit ridiculous and usless information that is not helpful. The guy obviously was walking or maybe even riding a bike, so why would he need a car dock?

That's why I edited my response at the bottom. Maybe you read this before the edit? I can actually say it's the 1st time I have actually started a post that way in any forums I am in, but I have a craw up my butt and years of not saying anything overrode my better judgement.

It appears that I may not have Car Home installed or corrupt? I see on the rooted phone that the app com.android.cardock is installed but there is 0.00MB, so is it possible it is not fully installed on my phone? Is there a way to reinstall?

You don't have car home in your app drawer? Start another thread if you don't. Its a preloaded app

I don't. It's showing in the settings-manage applications. Guessing this has been the problem all along?

I do sincerely appreciate the helpful comments and apologize for coming on strong. I don't know why I felt I needed to comment on the lack of respect and useless advice from the VERY, VERY small few in this forum, so to those that truly do try to help and often do help, thank you.
