Hi!

Love this forum and love my Hero but I have a problem hence why I'm here lol.

Long story short I bought a Hero last year but couldn't update software via HTC site (they eventually told me it was a sample). Now the sellers has agreed to a refund and rightly so cos this wasn't in the description and it came with s 1000 mAh battery!

I want to back up my phone like you usually do on like Nokia PC suite and put it onto one I might be buying from CEX. I did read a thred similar to this once but can't find it!

Any help will be appreciated, cheers :)

HTC provide nothing remotely as comprehensive as PC Suite, unfortunately. All is not gloom though... mount the Hero via USB and copy everything off the drive to a folder on your PC. When you get your replacement, simply reverse the process and all your data files (music, photos etc) will be safe.

Contacts are most easily saved by syncing to Googlemail; that way as soon as you enter your Google account details on the new handset the contacts will be pushed to it.

Google Checkout ties paid apps to your account, so they'll remain available in "My Downloads" in the Market app. Free ones aren't, so either make a note of the names or use something like Astro File Manager to back those up.

Hope this helps. If I've missed anything please ask.

Before you return this oddity, can you tell me the build number displayed in "About phone"? HTC's description has me intrigued now... I'm wondering if you've actually ended up with an "engineering sample".

Yes of course:

1.76.405.6 146733 CL#47214 test-keys

Well the seller has confirmed to me he was selling on the behalf of someone else and that person has said yes it was a sample!

I'm about to send it back today (gonna try and send it before 3:30 for next day delivery). I think the seller is gonna relist it but If you or some other forum member was interested in it i'm sure i can tell him to sell it to you ;-)

Just did a quick google search on unlocked bootloader, seems it is used for unlocking locked Android phones? Can something interesting like creating a unlock app be made using this phone or something else interesting?
