Root Questions About Rooting My Droid 2

Hello, I'm new to these forums and was hoping I could find some help here. I have had my Droid 2 for almost a year now and recently caught on to rooting and what you can do with your phone. While speed and removing apps that were preinstalled are things I would like to do, I really am interested in the custom ROMS you can install to customize your phone.

Now, first I'm asking, is that a silly reason? Should I risk bricking my phone just for a custom ROM? If yes, I'll just drop the thought, but if no, would someone be able to either guide me through the rooting process and what I need to install afterwards to use custom ROMS, or provide me links to such? I apologize ahead of time if there are already threads addressing this and would appreciate any links to these. And also, if someone is willing to recommend a good starting ROM for me, that would be appreciated too. And if I need to read more about it, please show me links for that too.

Custom ROM's are fun, but I always find myself back to stock. There is a stickied thread with all the currently supported ROM's and the features of each. Some are a bit more difficult to install, but not headache worthy. Also, I have yet to see someone actually brick a D2. They're usually recovered with some time and patience.

Thank you! I think I've grown bored of stock and guess I'm looking for a change without getting a whole new phone. I replaced my home launcher, but suppose I'm looking for something more. It seems easy if you follow the directions, but I suppose I worry too much about messing things up.

It's not a problem. Your best bet is to pick a ROM from the given link below, and I'll do my best to give detailed instructions for a hopefully headache free flash.

The reason it's best to pick a ROM first is because some are flashed different than others.

I think I'm leaning toward Cyanogenmod, I've heard some good things about it and I like it's look. How noticeable is the battery issue though?

The battery issue is very noticeable on the official version. The latest version on the GB kernel is pretty awesome, though. I'm on it now.

Do you know of any ROMS that are either true vanilla Gingerbread or very similar to vanilla Gingerbread? I like that look.

The difference between CM7 GB and CM7 Froyo is that CM7 GB is the most up-to-date version available, with the latest kernel. Along with the GB kernel, you receive better battery life, and better performance.

I would recommend CM7GB or Apex at this point.

- Install and run z4root
- Install Droid2Bootstrapper
- Run Bootstrapper
- Wipe data/factory restore
- Advanced, wipe Dalvik cache and Battery stats
- Install .zip from SD card
- Install GB leak
- Reboot

At this point, once booted into GB leak, you need to activate. Once activated, you will run Droid2Bootstrapper only. You will run the Droid2Bootstrapper, and follow the exact same steps given above, with the exception being you will install CM7GB and GApps, rather than the GB leak.

(Hint: You will use the volume rocker to move up and down, camera for select, and power for back, using Droid2Bootstrapper.)

No, once in GB, you will need to install Bootstrap again.

Okay, managed to get the Gingerbread leak to load cleanly again. If I do decide to flash that rom, can I do so even if I've been using my phone on the leak?

Yes, but you must wipe data/factory restore and wipe Dalvik in Bootstrap before flashing a ROM.
