ADW launcher or GO launcher EX? which is better?

why does Go Launcher require internet permissions?

sorry, but i prefer not to install an app from a Chinese developer (or most other developers for that matter) that unnecessarily requests internet permission.

i have been using ADWLauncher.EX for a long time now on my Droid X (both Froyo and Gingerbread). it is fast, very smooth, and very stable (unlike Launcher Pro on my particular phone). i also never get a screen redraw after exiting apps like i used to with Launcher Pro.

ok, you're right, i shouldn't have written that, at least not without explanation.

i have nothing against Chinese people... or Russian people, or French people, or any other people. it just appears to me that most of the android malware stories i've read about lately are for apps that forward data back to servers located in China. So it's not about the people at all, i'm just trying to practice safe phones by avoiding apps that request internet permission and are written by Chinese developers.

maybe i'm paranoid, but i definitely apologize if anyone is offended by my comment.

just wanted to hear from you guys on what launcher you think is better? Im trying to decide of one of the two, anyone has any advice? or is there a even better launcher then those two?

I have tried almost all the launchers out there including launcher pro plus and adw ex on my hd2.I always come back to Go Launcher Ex which i feel is the best.

It has the best of features of both launcher pro plus and adw ex plus some additional features. Also icon changing is easier with added icon packs.

Both launcher pro plus and adw ex full versions r paid but Go Launcher is free.

While it's true that a lot of the malware striking the Market has originated in China, you shouldn't brand every app made by a Chinese developer as potential malware. From what I've seen, most of the malware masqueraded as a copy of a popular game, a random wallpaper (these shouldn't need to phone home), or some oddball, one-off app that few people installed. Go Launcher EX (and the other various homescreen replacement apps) are wildly popular apps that have been around a long time with literally millions of downloads (over five million for Go Launcher EX alone) and thousands of comments.

I can understand caution, but paranoia will deprive you of some great apps if you avoid all Chinese developers, many of whom are some of the most dedicated and passionate in the dev community. If you have any suspicions, keep an eye on the permissions requested, look at the developer's track record, check comments, and visit their website. With a little forethought, you can enjoy awesome apps while still keeping your phone safe.

Happy Androiding!

Probably a dumb question but my Galaxy SG II is my first Android phone so pretty new to this.. what is the advantage to using one of these launchers as opposed to the Touchwiz 4.0 that comes with my phone?

Customization! Change the look of your dock (the static four icons at the bottom of the screen) by changing the icons, layout, or even how many docks you have. Easily change your icons. Change the look of your app drawer with a custom background and behavior (i.e., vertical scrolling instead of horizontal). Change the number of home screens you have and the transition animation when you switch between them. Themes!

Basically continue to make your phone yours without the need for rooting or installing a custom ROM. :) And the best thing is, you can always go back to your stock launcher if you want.

Cheers Coyote, I have come from a symbian phone which I was using SPB Mobile Shell on for ages and loved it so I guess it's a similar thing to that.

Happy to help, and as AntiTrolla pointed out you can get SPB Shell for Android. It's pricey for an app, but looks very nice and might be right up your alley if you're already familiar with it. Here's the Market link: SPB Shell 3D

I use ADW Launcher EX. I've tried Go Launcher Ex but it absorbs way too much battery from my experiences. In less than 2 hours, without extensive use, my battery died. ADW Launcher has a little bit more customization and does not use that much battery. I could be wrong but those are my experiences with Go Launcher. It is a very good Home Launcher though.

I got a Flashed Galaxy S with Darky's Rom 9.2 Extreme Edition.

I don't think there is one that's objectively better than the other, each of the different launchers has their pros and cons; I would recommend you to try both (you can get an app like Home Switcher to switch between one and the other), just remember to strip the widgets of the inactive one.

In my personal case, GO Launcher EX has all the things that I need from a launcher with very few complaints *leers at the home bar at the bottom of the app drawer*, that and the convenience of having many features that are pay-only on some other launchers for free.
