Will the iphone kill Android?

Lets face it, Android is a mess right now. Google seemingly has no control over which phones get what update. You have year old G1s running 1.6 while a 3 month old phone like the Hero and 2 month old phone like the Moment are still running 1.5, it makes no sense at all. Carriers and manufacturers are skipping updates like 1.6 and 2.0 and promising 2.1 updates while leaving their customers on outdated software.

With Apple and AT&T's contract ending this summer and with it being hinted the iphone will make its way too all the major carriers, this could mean the death of Android. The new iphone will almost certainly do alot more than even 2.1 can dream of and with how badly Google, manufacturers and carriers are failing with Android updates, I wouldnt be surprised to see a TON of Android users jump off the bandwagon and get an iphone. I know I sure will if this keeps up and I have only been an Android user for a few weeks.

Bottom line is Google is willing to take money from the highest bidder on exclusive updates. Like Verizon getting the 2.0 and N1 getting 2.1, all the while giving the shaft to all the other Android users. Once the iphone becomes readily available, you think people are going to stick with Android and the way its being run? I dont.

You know what, in a way I agree with you, for this fact:

The market is a device fragmented, thus not all android devices can use the same apps etc. I know im inpatient, compared to ERIS users and the like, but my DROID being at 2.0.1 and the N1 at 2.1 already out of the box just pisses me off. Ive had this phone a few months and im already being left in the dark, atleast for a short time. I cant say yet that I will jump to an iphone when it comes to VZW, but we will just have to see how this all plays out.

Here is a good article on the subject: How Google Can Fix Android's Lame App Store

Android has been out less than a year and a half.
The iPhone has been out for 4+ years?

Apple has basically device with improved specs to keep in mind when designing.
Android has how many devices? 15 with more coming out every month?

Apple has one network to design for.
Android is on all networks.

The iPhone has a much bigger market share compared to Android. It's no wonder the profit is higher. It might not reach 50-50 for developers profits, but the gap will definitely decrease from 90-10.

You question the success of Android? Look at the leaps and bounds and updates that have been released in the last 1.25 years.

what is apple 4.0 going to have that android doesnt have? multi-touch? multi-task? a larger screen with more resolution? think about this....everything that the new iphone will have - the nexus one already has. All iphone will be doing is leveling the playing field. there wont be any bar raising going on...that is untill froyo comes out...

You whine about everything, its a wonder you even find the time to use your phone with all the "research" you do to find this useless information. I mean the first 5 post your talking to yourself in here............

NO!!!! The iphone wont kill android, just like apple hasnt killed microsoft geeze man

you wonder why you dont have the latest update ?!?! Correct me if im wrong ....Its out there....yep, already or just about written, and being TESTED (by your carrier/device) for your DEVICE so that it dosent FAIL and have someone like you go on a forum and WHINE about it to everyone!!!!!!

Is your Android experience THAT much worse cause there are a few lil things that your phone will not do YET???

Whats amazing is RIM has survived using this exact same model for years. Crazy, huh? This whole idea of "fragmentation" was cooked up in a few articles, and some idiots jumped on it. The only company who follows this model is APPLE (and only for their phones) because every phone is almost exactly the same - OF COURSE they can run the same software! Blackberries run different OS's on EVERY CARRIER - and they've been at the game a lot longer. Completely idiotic.

I'm going to call Apple about fragmentation because my G4 and G5 can't run a lot of the newer apps - ones that are made for Intel Leopard, and some for Intel Snow Leopard. I got 3 Apple computers (1 new Mac Mini, 1 G4 Powerbook and 1 G5) AND EACH ONE HAS A DIFFERENT OPERATING SYSTEM THAT THE OTHER CANNOT RUN. Is this the kind of fragmentation you are talking about? Some people are so gullible just repeating some no brain stuff they hear someone else say. If you want an iphone just buy the phone. Your wasting people's brain cells with your posts.

The problem right now is the small app market, on top of that apps being "fragmented" for device software. I believe with due time everything will catch up and be fine, but right now with a market flooded with more garbage than good its just overly limited.

Yeah man, those 20,000 apps just aren't enough. Barely lasted me a week.

Software wise I feel Android has the potential to move ahead of the iPhone and then remain there, if it isn't already the front runner. However, hardware wise I think the only phone that rivals the iPhone is the Nexus One and the rumored Supersonic is going to surpass both. So, NO I think once all carriers have a phone that has comparable or superior hardware an iPhone will not steal the show if it becomes available to all carriers. And having so many Android phones with hardware keyboards is a huge bonus.

Woah, wash the sand from your vag for a sec, no need to be a sarcastic prick.

Im not even a fan of the iphone, im just saying most of the apps in the market are complete shit, but im sure it will change as time goes by. Other point is when I originally had my Eris, with 1.5, there were many apps that i was not available to download, I understand not everything is going to be compatible due to hardware differences.

I don't disagree that it can be frustrating having a recent phone on older android versions. However, I fail to see how this is any different than your home computer. I mean, these phones are essentially small computers. Not everyone is running Windows 7 on their home computers and are very happy with XP.

That being said, give me my 2.1 update please.
