Help How can I make my Droid fast again?

When I first got my Droid, it was really fast. Now 2 years later, its slow as I don't know what. My screen goes blank after ever task that I do for about 30 or more seconds. Sometimes when I click the button to make a call, the numbers won't go when pressed and then all the sudden they all shoot up on the screen 5 seconds later or say I accidently call someone and I am trying to end the call, The END button won't appear until the person answers the phone and has nothing to do with the sensor at the top of the screen near flashing notification light either.

A Verizon rep told me in order to fix the issue, I would have to do battery pulls. That don't even work. Perhaps my 2 year old, 1st generation Droid, is just old and outdated even though I am running the newest software on it.

Im just annoyed how slow it is. It processes information sloooooooooow!!!

I do have a task killer but I am not seeing any change and I do have a Cache cleaner that can clean all my apps and I am not really seeing any difference in speed when I clear my caches.

My phone is NOT rooted.

A factory reset is probably the answer.

Im told by users of this site as well as Verizon customer service reps that a factory reset probably will NOT fix the problem. I may do it just to say I did it but I don't think it will work but who knows.

If you don't mind setting your phone up again it certainly can't hurt.

Unfortunately, this is your problem. Even if you were rooted and rom'd you would still be having issues...it just can't keep up any more. You can try a factory reset but it's not going to help much. I tried it a few times with no noticeable improvement.

This could be part of the problem as well. Task killers can make things worse, not better. There are a lot of threads about them but, it boils down to this...it uses more system resources to kill things and have them re-start than it does to just let Android do it's thing.

ROM (Liquid Froyo 1.95 still, it just works) Overclocked to 800-1100MHZ

Keep cache clear regularly, weekly reboot. Have been with this setup about two months now, I've had others comment how fast it is for an OG Droid

While I agree with everything here, the D1 is still an aging beast. If the OP has the funds and an upgrade available, I'd shoot for a new phone. The Bionic is leaps and bounds above the OG.

My phone's power button stop functioning after 8 months - got the replacement and after reloading all my apps, the new phone is TWICE as fast as the old one.
The only substantive difference?
I use fewer widgets.
I have to think in 8 months I accumulated a lot of detritus that slowed the phone.
Widgets that are constantly polling outside have to add to the load.

And a reset is not so bad - it took me a couple of hours to get everything back - 5 email accounts, banking, IM, et cetera.

Detritus. That's a great word.

I use 13 widgets and I don't think they slow the phone down. xScope has a bad memory leak and NewsRob gets stuck sometimes. I blame those apps for my slow downs.

I'm working on using SuperCharger but the 17 options scroll off the screen. Which one do you use?

I also did the same type of thing as BmanCV60 (except I'm running CM 7).

For the Supercharger script, when it shows the options, you can still use your finger to scroll back up - I heavily recommend using your phone in landscape mode for this.

I did a lot of checking on my phone, and I've actually found the Agressive 2 option (number 3 on the list) has worked best for camera & GPS navigation. Surprisingly enough, stock kernel worked better with netflix, but I can survive not having netflix run smoothly to have the rest of the system work better

Currently I run at 800 mhz with a chevy ulv kernel that can go to 1.25. However the system seems to have problems running for me at the higher speeds doing GPS and such, and 800 still works very well. My phone shows its age when I look at new programs, but for mid-age and older programs (or more basic) my system runs just fine.

Bottom line is if you feel comfortable tinkering a bit with your phone, your Droid can probably last you another year...two depending on if you avoid newer apps and they don't do something stupid to the basic google apps (like market...like they started to do) and suck up all your storage space. If tinkering with your phone is like someone who burns rice in the kitchen, then you need to watch for an upgrade with your plan. They are coming up with some nice budget android phones in here that, while they won't tear up the road like a Galaxy S II or Bionic, will still be a marked improvement for the Droid 1.

When I try to scroll back in Script Manager it just generates control characters.

* Landscape cures that.

** You have to have the right Busybox installed (1.18.2). Use Busybox Installer.

*** Set the /data/99 script to run on boot. You have to config browse as root to do that.

**** Google Earth now works on my Droid 1.

I was having serious lag problems with Multitask. Switching back to Aggressive 2 made things better without a reboot. Interesting.

Now, now gentlemen all this V6 talk should almost start to qualify for this thread to be moved to the all things root section, yes? As when I read the title of this thread my first impression was to just chime in and say, "root it!"

BTW, I just changed from Balanced 1 to Aggressive 1 tonight, trying to get the V6 right; winner00's CM nightly #173, P3Droid's SV 800 kernel.

Actually, a thread like this can be extremely useful in detective work on what works to help the Droid keep up speed wise. I do think Widgets can slow things down. I used the Multitask setting on V6 and it didn't help alot. Haven't tried the aggressive setting yet. Navigation seems to not like this phone anymore. I use it, it works for a bit and then locks up and I have to do a reset. I can see the triangle on the screen stuttering instead of moving smoothly along,especially when it gets in a area that has a few turns or twists in it. On the highway it isn't too bad but after awhile it still reboots or freezes up. The camera is similarly slow. Take a pic,wait a good while for the image to show up afterwards. This may be related to me putting in a higher 32gb card,not really sure. Anyone else have issues with the larger 32gb card slowing the phone down?? This is all about detective work folks so let's keep it going and let's see what everyone finds as far as what slows their phones down.

I'm liking Aggressive 2 but I don't think Droid Concepts is the ROM to use. I'm getting an Incredible 2 in a few days so I won't be doing any more testing on the Droid 1 but this thread will be really useful for the folks trying to keep this phone running.

I wasn't talking about closing or actually moving the thread, that part was tongue in cheek.

The V6 settings I posted earlier seemed to work pretty well, but the camera is REAL slow as Sportster mentioned. BTW Sportster and all others, if we want to make this thread really good, why not only post our observations, but also make sure we include all the pertinate data about our phone. I think if we post the important info in the last few lines in the menu -> settings -> about phone it would be of great info to all the future readers.

I agree about Droid Concepts. It got off to a good start in a way, but #11 just didn't do it for me at all. Today I am trying one of the last CM6 nightlies without V6, and P3Droid's sv 800 kernel. I don't know if I'll last, Froyo looks rather bland co0mpared to a Gingerbread rom.

Oh yeah, before I forget, Sportster, if your phone is rooted and you have either SetCPU or another way to set your kernel's governer, set it to performance when you want to use the camera. Makes all the difference in the world.
