I remember it like yesterday getting my brand new shiny HTC hero going home thinking I was the coolest person in the world LOL. not even knowingwhat I really just bought or knowing how addicted I would become to this site. The endless hours on this site constantly refreshing for the supposed 2.1 update rumors ah I miss them days I've since moved on to a 3vo but just wanted to show my appreciation to this forum bc without yall I wouldn't know half the stuff I do today about technology so thanks again peace love protein LOL

I remember the good old days too. I remember when the Sprint HTC Hero subforum was really active. Now, it is much slower, but thankfully it is still alive. In fact, it was still very active up until the Sprint HTC EVO 3D was released. ;)

I have jumped on the Sprint HTC EVO 3D bandwagon too, but I will never forget my roots, yes, pun intended, in the Sprint HTC Hero subforum. I am glad to see that others continue to help the people that still use this handset as their daily driver. :)

We will see you on the new dark side soon, I am sure of it :D

I've still got another 5 months of rocking the Hero before I can get a shiny new device. I try to help out when and where I can, but this forum is falling off fast I have noticed. Everyone is moving on to greener pastures. It's inevitable really. Eventually, I will too.

I bought my Hero when it came out. Ran the stock OS for probably close to a year but then decided to root. Learned a lot and I still have my Hero on AOSP 2.3.4. I don't use my Hero all that much because I'm home a lot and between the Web and VOIP I'm pretty content. But I'm looking for a new phone. Now I read about locked Bootloaders, encrypted Bootloaders, 3G-4G issues when rooting. Rooted but not unlocked. I'm already missing my Hero which seemed to unlock with such ease and have all sorts of custom ROMs and custom Recoveries. I like the Photon because of the CDMA/GSM feature but I believe it has an encrypted bootloader and not much happening on XDA. I'm hoping the Nexus Prime comes out on Sprint, but the rumors say Verizon and even though it's pure Google does that mean locked encrypted bootloader too. It's a dilemma.

I think I'm like the few people left on here that is still using the Hero, haha. I was about to upgrade few months back but none of the phone really "WOW" me, so I decided to hold off. Honestly, I am waiting to see what iPhone 5 will have to offer. Hope I don't get ban from this site for saying that lol =X

Right now, I would say that the Sprint HTC EVO 3D, the Sprint Samsung Epic 4G Touch, or the Sprint Motorola Photon 4G would be your best bets in new handsets. I love my Sprint HTC EVO 3D. :)

I still use my Sprint HTC Hero for a Wi-Fi enabled Internet device. I flash the latest nightlies of CyanogenMod 7.1 on it and also try other ROMs too. ;)

Good to see you guys still hang round here.

I just flashed my hero to aospCMod-HEROC-20110523 (I know, I'm it a bit late =P). I notice that Chinese font is missing, did they remove it? Kind of sucks because titles of songs and name of Chinese artists does not show up correctly.

Imek - I beleive AOSP posted a patch for that at one point....
You'd have to search the xda thread though.....

The good ol' days are still alive and well for me since I'm cheap and my upgrade time just rolled around recently... I'll get the Galaxy S2 pretty soon and will be glad to be rid of this wretched thing. Every update I downloaded was slower and more unstable than the last, and now I'm stuck with a phone that only works when it feels like working (and takes its time doing so). Rebooting is an hourly ritual. I haven't seen my Facebook news feed in 6 months. I'm out of memory and can't download apps anymore. On the plus side, finding out I actually have a data connection is like getting a Christmas present (it's rare) and I have plenty of time to meditate while I'm waiting for text messages to load (I have to delete my messages every week or two or that app becomes so slow I can't even type in it).

This thing almost turned me completely away from Android. I'm not sure if it's cute because it's one of the first Android phones and is early tech or if it's just a piece of garbage. It feels a lot more like the latter these days. It works about as well as I'd imagine a 486 would with Windows 7.

I guess I'll always look back on this and laugh. It's hard to even remember the fact that I was just thrilled to have a smartphone and didn't care how slow and horrible it was :)

Wow, I am truly sorry about all the problems with your handset, man. I never really had any issues with mine, even when it was in its stock form, except a slightly laggy keyboard at times, which was eventually fixed with an OTA update. Of course, I had already long since rooted and flashed Android 2.2 and then Android 2.3 by that time. The Sprint HTC Hero is really a joy to use after you have flashed a custom ROM and overclocked it. :)

I think that calling the Sprint HTC Hero a piece of garbage is a bit harsh. This was basically the THIRD Android handset ever, and the FIRST with HTC Sense UI installed. It was also the first Android handset to feature Adobe Flash Lite, which was quite a thing to have back then. Please do not take the misadventures with your Sprint HTC Hero and dislike the entirety of Android because of it. Once the CPUs hit 1 GHz and the RAM hit 512 MB, things improved A LOT with Android. My wife has a Sprint HTC EVO 4G and absolutely loves it and everything it can do, and do well too. You will be extremely happy with your Sprint Samsung Epic 4G Touch. Android has come a long way and it continues to improve as time passes. ;)

That's why I said "these days," heh... it was fine when it came out but it sure looks ridiculous now. Considering it's only been two years that's pretty amazing.

Android is definitely improving. It'll be interesting to see how the iPhone 4S sales compare to it now that both systems are available from the same places at the same price.

Ahhh, the Hero. It was my 1st Android phone, after coming from the Windows Mobile HTC phones of Touch Pro and Mogul. I was hooked with Gmail real-time email service, integrated Nav with contacts. The ability to answer texts, check email, and listen mp3's at the same time without killing the phone or needing to soft-reset it won me over. Once I got news of the Evo, it was time to say goodbye to the Hero, however the Evo got replaced when the 3D came out. The Hero will always be the phone that started me on my Android kick!

Yes indeed the good old days................ I still have my Hero and it works really well for the technology that it is. When I recall how hard it was for me to just root this phone. But with the lasting help of you gentlemen we got it done. Lost root at one time and did it again and updated to this stock rom that I have been on ever since and all is good. For me I have about five months or so 'till upgrade time and while I will be staying with sprint if they got the Iphone I may go in that direction. Reading about locked bootloaders and all that stuff makes me leery of HTC and Android. Besides as good as my phone has ever been my friends with the competition seem to have the advantage with their "Jail Broke" phones. But if the Hero keeps going as good as it's going I may wait another year. What I use it for it really works well. The telephone part of this instrument has been lousy at best. But this has been from day one and through three roms so I just think the CPU gets way overloaded processing phone calls or what ever it's problem is. But it works and I'm okay with it. I carry around an old Sprint/Nextel Motorola that is one solid piece of hardware. Fantastic verbal communicator and works every time and every place. Always wished my Hero was as robust as the Motorola but I realize they are two literally different devices that do different things. But for a phone that Motorola can't be beat. But thanks for this thread and to you men that have kept my phone going........... I'm still around and the Hero keeps on going well...............

Lisa :)
