Android official desktop version

Micorsoft just launched its developers preview of Windows 8... i must say it is pretty impressive... but a humble request as an android fan... it is high time to come up with an official desktop version of Android...

Any thoughts ppl?

Just curious, but why not just install Linux?

I could see this just being an add-on to the more popular builds of Linux + the Dalvik VM + Google Intergration (to be able to install stuff from the market). But as a sole OS? I don't think it would fit the bill of an OS on PC grade hardware.

Chrome OS was designed for low config netbooks... i'm talking about a full fledged 32 and 64bit OS made specifically for desktop and laptop usage...
and dont you think that the problem with the developers having to worry about higher resolutions etc can be fixed if they were developing for a pc version and not for handhelds...

here i aint talking about the current versions of android, that certainly wont do but what if google built an os designed to fit the bill here...

jerofld is right. Android is just Linux. Unless I could run Windows apps on it, an Android desktop would be useless.

There are Android versions out there you can install on desktops. At least some desktops any way. There are so many different hardware configurations out there, it's difficult to support them all to say the least. I tried it maybe a year ago. It was a build of Donut I think and it didn't work at all. Didn't even boot on the archaic piece of junk I was using. I'm sure they've made improvements since then though.

@nelcatjar, ha ha... nice... i like the sound of android running win apps... but if that was possible, Ubuntu would have eaten up microsoft loooong ago... but then i do agree with you, windows still capitalizes for professional use...

I thought you could run Windows apps inside Ubuntu in VMs. Am I wrong about that? It's been several years since I tried Ubuntu.

It's not exactly user-friendly to do so. Some apps are easily ran in a VM. Other things, like games, are a bit tougher and take tinkering time. So Ubuntu + VM is not going to be a Windows-alternative for the mainstream in the near future.

Bad idea. Windows and Mac just have too much support now. What will Android bring to desktop that cant already be done? Android took over the mobile world because it was able to be fun and good looking like the iPhone, but customization was possible like Symbian. There's just gonna be too much catching up for them, to be able to run all programs that the PC is able to, not to mention probably no support for legacy PC programs.

I use android 2.3 x86 version as a dual boot on my laptop... what do you mean desktop version?
Thats what honeycomb is supposed to be
